Lake Mission Viejo 12/19/09:

Glenn wanted to fish LMV on Saturday so we made plans earlier in the week to go fishing. His buddy Tom couldn’t join us today because he had to shop for the upcoming holiday. Wish he could have joined us because he would have caught his 4 fish limit of Nebraska for the first time. We freaking slayed them today! Glenn caught one fish that may be a Mt. Lassen fish. All of our Nebraska fish went 2.3lbs or bigger. Man! Do these fish have some serious shoulders and fight to them. They fight hard because they don’t have those whimpy Mt. Lassen tails. These Nebraska fish have full tails. This isn’t no fish tail as the pics will tell the story.

We get to the spot and Glenn tosses out a ½ nightcrawler. Glenn says he’s gonna find the fish!! I didn’t know what to believe. I thought a piece of nightcrawler fishing is for kids! Like the fish are gonna hit that! Yeah right! Glenn was bit right away and the sun wasn’t even up yet to shine on the crack of my ***!! The morning was sort of cold but that’s why they provide those padded seats.

The first fish is in the boat and no big deal. All I have tied on at the moment is a shallow running crankbait. I get a light tap and no hookup. It gets taped again after another cast and fish on! My first fish and the biggest fish between us is a 3.4lber. Glenn wouldn’t stop catching fish so I was playing deckhand all morning netting his fish as my crankbait was stuck in the net. I couldn’t even tie on a nightcrawler to toss out. Well, Glenn was done by 7:30am and it was his fastest time ever.

I finally toss out a nightcrawler piece and the bait gets chewed off. This happened to me a few times. Maybe it was bluegill or small bass as the bites were small. We were both done fishing shortly after 9:00am. We try to go in and the trolling motor is dead. So I call the lifeguard over to tow us back in.

Considering that it being a Saturday the lake wasn’t even crowded. The lake was stocked on Wednesday with big Nebraska fish. Most of the fish are going 2.5lb - 6.8lbs. I saw quite a few in the 6lb - 7lb range after they stocked the lake. The lake is closed to ALL fishing after it is stocked with trout. It allows the fish to acclimate to the water. They will open the next day for fishing. Many lakes in the OC get bombarded after a fish stocking.

Here are the pics!!

Glenn is bit right away. He lands the first Nebraska trout of the morning.

Hey! What about the 15ft rule?! These people who live on the lake have big trout swimming under their dock. They were throwing lures and catching them. Cheaters!! That’s about as easy as it gets here!

Our catch of the day. You can’t go wrong with catching these Nebraska trout.

It was an awesome day out. The weather was great too. Most of our fish came on nightcrawlers. Glenn caught 1 fish on a mini jig tipped with a nightcrawler. I'm not a big fan for mini jig fishing. All of the fish were cruising under docks, near docks, or out on front of the docks in 15ft-20ft of water. The 15ft rule applies so we can't cast too close to the docks. We need to cast 15ft out in front of the docks. If anyone is caught they kick you off for the day and or fine you $25.00 for a previous offense. Sorry! I won't take that chance. Quite a few fish 5.0lbs - 6.8lbs have been caught. See ya on the water!

Hey Dave thanks for taking me to the lake today! I had a great time
Also very good and accurate write up

Fishing for Nebraska trout is truly awesome. They are feisty, have a mean set of shoulders, and put up a nice fight. Last season was a tough go at them. I think what has made the difference was that they had 2 stockings of MT Laussen's prior to adding the Nebraska's and they had mixed in with them. They are no longer staying in the swim beaches

Dave was right I primarily fished with a bobber (how ghey)

I wanted to locate the fish and I remembered the depth that they were swimming at last time. So what hungry trout could resist a juicy crawler just dangling in front of their faces? It worked and I was on first cast in less than 5 minutes. It worked so well that I didn't bother changing up except for my last one. I just wanted to fish a little longer so I thought that I would delay catching my limit by trying something else.

So I tipped a white mini jig with a crawler and set it under the bobber
I twitched it around and I was on again in less than 5 minutes
I was done before 7:30

Some crazy day of catching for me

yea these nebraska trout are hard fighters..first fish i had on probably would have been my biggest. this guy went under my boat and wrapped around my anchor line, then the line snapped. :( biggest one for me today was only 2.8 lbs..dave said they stocked with some 6-8 lbers? Where are those guys at? haha

Round #2 for Sunday 12/20/09 at Lake Mission Viejo:

Rich wanted to fish on Sunday so I went with him. We were both done fishing by 8:00am. Rich used a white poweregg with an orange powerworm,#8 Owner mosquito hook, med split shot,4lb line, on a 3ft leader. I used inflated crawlers on the same setup except with a #6 Owner mosquito hook. My last fish came on a 1/4oz silver kastmaster. I couldn't get bit throwing the kastmaster first thing in the morning. On Rich's first cast he lands a trout in a couple of minutes. He was nearly done fishing in the first hour. We then had a double hookup after his first fish. He was on fire with the powermouse. A lot of the fish went airborne when they felt the hook after taking the baits. A bigger trout shook me off after it felt the hook. I didn't have to set the hook since it already came out when the fish jumped. We were the first ones to come in with 4 fish limits for the day. Weather was on the cooler side today. Here are the pics.

You have to know someone who lives there or live there yourself... I've been dying to fish there sometime... No luck yet...

You have to live in the city of Mission Viejo to have access to this lake. We get a membership card in order to use the facilities. We are allowed 10 guests per day. The guest list was bumped up from 6 to 10 earlier this year. Each guest must enter the lake with the lake member.

I know a lot of guys on this site want to fish this lake. You have the non respectful ones and you have the good ones who follow the fishing rules. If a guest screws up then it goes or can go on my record. I'll lose my lake pass for any length of time. The lake staff makes the call on that one. I'm still new to this site and haven't fished with anyone yet. I don't want or need anyone to kiss my arse. You know who you are when it comes to being respectful. If your a good person who follows the rules then we can hook something up.

I will say this.... if you're hung over or are high on drugs it's a good bet you'll be going home. This is a family atmosphere lake and all of the rules on this lake are enforced no matter if you're a veteran or beginner angler. Go to Lake Mission Viejo.Org to read the fishing rules.
