Corona lake 12/6/09

After a long week of hard work compiling end of year results for my annual review, trout bite fever had set in good and hard by end of business on Friday evening. I had already made plans to go out to Lake Mission Viejo on Saturday with Dodgers91485 and my buddy Daryl. We had a great time at Lake Mission Viejo, but when I got home on Saturday night after attending my grandmothers 90th birthday party I knew that I needed more drag pulling fun before the weekend could come to an end.

I decided to sleep in for a change, and not be in any rush to get to the lake. When Sunday morning arrived the snooze button got a work out and I slowly rolled out of bed around 7:30AM. I gathered my gear and was on the road by 8:00 AM. The forecast was questionable, but I had a good feeling that it was going to be a good day.

The sky looked perfect for a trout slaying session

Just what the doctor ordered
http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad122/wnwrigh/DSCN2279.jpg

Took a couple shots of this guy as I was on my way out
http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad122/wnwrigh/DSCN2282.jpg

Not as clear, but he was posing
http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad122/wnwrigh/DSCN2284.jpg

I finally started fishing, and hooked up almost instantly on a small but feisty Mt. Lassen stocker. He shook the hook at the tube and declined to be photographed. I continued on toward the east side of the east side of the lake and after a drift or two I managed this nicer grade model tout (Roughly 18” and 2 ¾ pounds)
http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad122/wnwrigh/DSCN2285.jpg

After that fish, the bite died down while the wind picked up. I was starting to get cold even in the neoprene waders (The water at Corona is very cold now) so I decided to take a break on shore. I put out some green Powerbait, enjoyed a smoke and started to eat lunch. No sooner than I had the sandwich out of the bag I see a very subtle bite on the rod I put out with Powerbait. I pick up the rod and hold it for a minute, not feeling anything I put the rod down thinking maybe it just the wind. All of the sudden I see the line growing tighter, the rod start to bend that feeling of excitement comes over me as I grab the rod to set the hook. Fish On! The result of that hook up was a nice 5# tail walker. This fish fought hard, and had my rod just about U shaped at several points during the fight.

The wind started to die out, and the sun came out for a few minutes while I was getting ready to head back out on the tube. http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad122/wnwrigh/DSCN2289.jpg

I kicked back out got two fish back to back. One looked like a Jess Ranch ruby red, and one looked like a Mt. Lassen Sierra Rainbow. I was to busy catching fish and forgot to take pictures as I added them to the stringer, but they were both very nice fish. I caught my last fish at 2:30 and started my kick back towards the car. This fellow looked cool perched upon on of the many above water stumps.

The true trout slayers are back in action
http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad122/wnwrigh/DSCN2292.jpg

As I was getting ready to depart, I met the very nice gentleman from the fishing webcam website. He took a nice final stringer shot for me. I had a 57 shirt on, but it was too cold not to have a jacket on I need to buy a team 57 hoody to represent in the winter, or maybe one of the new beanies.

I can’t say enough about the quality of fish coming out of Corona Lake. These are beautiful nice sized hard fighting fish, get out there you will not be disappointed!

Parting Shots:
Most productive bait was the Orange Eagle Claw Worms, which you can pick up at the Corona Tackle Shop. These worms were most affective nose hooked and fished with a small split shot 12 inches above a #8 mosquito hook. This bait and set up accounted for 4 of my 5 fish.

Thanks Big Daddy, there were some guys out there before I got there who had caught some really nice fish. I guess the morning bite had been good to them. They left shortly after I got into the area.

GEEZ, you're really pumping that post count. I'm going to start calling you Poxy Boggards 65:LOL:.

I expect the tube to show on Thursday. I thinks it's a good thing I bought it because I'm not sure that Bob Marriots will have the Stabond delivered with enough time to patch up the Fat Cat.

From now on, the knife stays in the truck until it's time to clean trout. That was easily the scariest moment I've experienced in a tube.

Good thing your cousins and uncles were close by on the pontoon boat, cause the Fishcat barely holds me up let alone a passenger...LOL

My fav. scent is the garlic bang stuff.

Poxy Boggards
12-08-2009, 06:50 PM
Thanks for the comment Rooster! I have not been using scents for the most part while tubing. I always carry some Garlic and Shad Bang, but have not needed to use it lately.

There's really not alot of trollable area on the lake right now because the water is so low. I would wait until the water gets near full pool before giving that a go. We tried trolling a few weeks ago and lost a bunch of lures.

Thanks again for the great comments guys!

Wes, it's going to be wet and rainy this weekend. I'm going rain or shine. Don't let a little rain scare you off.

It should be great fishing because I don't think many people will venture out in the rain.

12-09-2009, 10:50 AM
Alright cool..thanks wes.

How's fishing in general when it rains?

Poxy Boggards
12-09-2009, 11:54 AM
Maybe I'l have to pull out the rain gear...

I think it's usually pretty good in the rain. The few times that I have fished in the rain I have done pretty well. A couple of years ago during a team 57 event at SARL, I murdered the trout in the rain.

Yeah! Nice report and a good day on the water! Those Shimano Compre rods are really nice to have. Do any of the sporting good stores sell those trout worms yet? I have a bunch of Berkley trout worms but they are too thin. Berkley needs to fatten them up a little bit and they tear too easy. With those Eagle Claw trout worms do you need a poweregg to make them float? The Berkley worms will not float even with a Mustad #20 treble (tried it once to see if they float with a small hook on) hook on. You have to use a poweregg to get them to float.

LMV stocks next Wed. the 16th with the Nebraska fish. You guys (Daryl, Wes) should stop by on Saturday if you can. If your friend can't get you in then let me know. I will. Those orange trout worms are a favorite for those 2.5lb - 5.5lb Nebraska fish. Wait til ya catch one of these suckers! Your Shimano rod and reel will come in very handy. They fight so darn hard!!

The eagle claw nitro worms will float with a size 8 owner mosquito hook. The berkley powerworm needs a size 14 to float.

Yeah, the Eagle Claw worms float really well. I've found them a Big 5 a few times, and I believe that they have them at the Longfin. You can always get them at SARL or Corona.
