View Full Version : Team Trolltoon goes to S.W.A.T. Boot Camp: part 1

I have been following the surf fishing reports posted by Team 57 “Daniel Award Winner” Wingnut and the S.W.A.T. Team all this year and started to get the bug to go out and try to get a halibut of my own off the surf. I talked to Trolly several times about it and he got the same bug I did to get back to the surf and give it a try. So, I called Arthur to see if just maybe we could hook up with him some time to show us the a few tricks to get us on to the halibut. Arthur told me he’d be more than happy to get us headed in the right track.
It wasn’t but a few days later I got a call from Arthur and he said lets set a date and do this. We set the date and the wheels were turning to hit the surf with the Master.
The very next day I got another call from Arthur and he told me to look for a package of items Trolly and I would need to carry with us to ensure our best chances of getting a halibut. Sure enough just a few days later I come home from work to see this large box from Arthur. Well, like a kid that just woke up Christmas morning I tore into the box to find some of the most awesome assortment of surf fishing tackle and equipment I could have imagined:Shocked:……………….Included with all the goodies Arthur sent us was a very detailed letter explaining the days itinerary, what to expect as far as covering a lot of water, a list of items such as waders, waterproof jacket, snacks and water as well as warning us we’d be doing some walking. Nothing as extreme as what the S.W.A.T. Team would do in a day (That was a relief! LOL) but we would cover some ground and make several stops. As you can see from the photo of the contents of our package……….Team Trolltoon is ready to go!

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/091206-SWAT-surf/100_3540.jpg

As the date neared I received a message from Arthur that the although there was a storm coming in we were going to go no matter what. So, Arthur notified me that we would be accompanied by one of the Premier S.W.A.T. Team members, Bones, who would be assisting us in our quest to land a halibut and that we were to rendezvous at Bones house at 5:00am to start the day. Well needless to say I was pretty excited to go on this trip not just because Trolly and I were going to get to fish with both Wingnut and Bones but, if we did get a halibut it would be the first halibut I had ever caught and to get it from the surf using artificials would be pretty special.
Saturday morning finally came and I picked up Trolly at 4:00am and we were off to meet up with our guides for the day. As Trolly and I rolled up to Bones place we saw Bones outside waiting. We chatted with Bones for a while and shortly after Arthur arrived for the morning briefing. Trolly just had to show the guys his snack for the day……Trolli sour gummy crawlers. After our short briefing we jumped in the trucks and we were off to hit the surf.

Once we arrived at the first spot Wingnut and Bones had picked for us we geared up and got ready to make the hike down the hill. I took a look at the hill we were going to descend and thought to myself “Hey, we’re going to have to hike back up this thing” A shuttle would be good for the hike back up. I didn’t dare say anything. After all, Arthur told me it would be some mild hiking.

Once we got to the water Arthur instructed Trolly and I to follow his and Bones lead and cover as much water as we could casting the Lucky Crafts he gave us and if necessary we would tie up a dropshot rig if we hadn’t got any action with after a while. Well, Trolly and I went to work and we started casting and moving up the beach. The whole time I had that nervous anticipation of the first bite and hopes of getting my first halibut. Just as I started thinking the storm front that was moving in was going to put a damper on the fishing I got hit! I mean it hit hard. I yelled over to Arthur and he yelled to the other guys that we had a fish on and it looked like a big one. I could tell the way the fish held firm and made a couple of runs that made my drag sing that it was a good fish. All the time I was hoping that it was the halibut I was after. After some coaching from Arthur I was able to get the fish to the beach. It was somewhat disappointing that it wasn’t a halibut but it sure turned out to be my personal best calico bass!
It was great to feel the excitement and even better knowing the skunk was off.
After a few pics I let the fish go and it was then back to casting the lucky crafts. It wasn’t long after that Arthur and Bones got into the calico bite with nice fish of their own. Shortly after Bones released his calico I tossed out the lucky craft and hooked into another nice fish. This one was pretty stubborn and took a little while to get to shore. Once I got it to where we could see it turned out to be another calico just as big or bigger than my first one. Unfortunately just as I got it close it broke off taking my Lucky Craft with it. It was disappointing not to be able to get the pics with it but it was fun all the same.
Before I could get to my pack to get another lure Bones brought over one of his spare lucky crafts and told me to tie it on. He told me it had been a gift from Arthur to him and he wanted me to take it. I tied it back on and just a few casts later I hooked into another fish! I could tell right away it wasn’t a big fish but as I got it close to shore I saw the flash and saw that I had my first ever halibut! I yelled out to the guys and the party was on. We did it! Although it was a very small fish it was exciting all the same. :Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:
I’ve also got to stop right here and make mention that I had been talking to My Good Friend Trout Only all week with him giving me updates as to the condition of his wife Susan after she suffered a stroke earlier in the week and I told him that if I did get my first halibut I’d dedicate the catch to him and to his wife Susan. Well T.O. I did it and my personal best calico and my first halibut if for you and Susan My Friend.
After letting the halibut go we fished the area a little while longer and Arthur suggested we start making our way back to go to our next spot. On the way back I was able to land another calico and my day was a success at just the first stop. Now it was time to get Trollys on to a bite to complete the day.
Here’s some pics of our first stop of the day……………

Once we made it back up the hill (Without the help of a shuttle LOL) we geared down to head off to stop number two………

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/091206-SWAT-surf/100_3559.jpg

After a short jump down the coast we made our way down the hill for another try now at getting My Friend Trolly onto the fish.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/091206-SWAT-surf/100_3563.jpg

After we fished for a while at our second stop it Arthur suggested we take a lunch break to recharge our batteries and let the tide recede a little before hitting the next stop. Trolly and I liked the idea of a little rest and a little lunch.
Arthur and Bones jumped into one car and Trolly and I followed in the other. Now I have to say I liked Arthurs choice of eating establishments. Once we pulled in and I saw we were going to have lunch at The Beachcomber I felt this feeling of de javu…….Dana, this ones for you.
As it was the last time I ate with Friends at The Beachcomber it was Good Times having Good Conversation with Good Friends!
Just as we were packing up Trolly must have caught the eye of a gentleman in the parking lot and the next thing I hear is “Hey Buddy You got a fishing license?” LOL Trolly how do you do it man!

After lunch it was decided that we’d hit a couple more spots to see if we could get into some fish and most important get Trolly his halibut. But as luck would have it the weather and the surf started to turn against us. It didn’t stop Arthur from taking the last fish of the day. Another nice calico.:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

Arthur and Bones, Trolly and I want to thank you for your Friendship and the efforts you guys made to make this trip a success. For me personally the trip was a total success. I guess it was just my day. We couldn’t have been coached by anyone better than you two. I was amazed and inspired by your knowledge of the surf and I just hope we can get together again next season to chase the halibut.

Arthur, I just want to thank you not only for setting this up but also for the gifts you gave to Trolly and I to get us going on our quest for the halibut. Most important thanks for your Friendship.
I have had many memorable days with my Friends from Team 57 but this day will go down on my list as one of the most memorable.
I owe you big time My Friend!:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

Terry & Chris, it was my pleasure to host a couple of FNN Team 57 "Legends" on my turf.
You guys both did great... but especially YOU Terry. You certainly had the hot stick all day and outfished all of us. I could see it in your eyes Terry, the look of determination was undeniable. I remember hearing you say over & over... "Never give up, never give up..." And guess what, that kind of resolve and positive thinking translates to success! I only wished that we were able to put Trolly on his first surf Halibut also. But, there will be many more missions, many more chances to do just that. I still remember standing next to you when you hooked up to that first big Calico. The look on your face was priceless... especially when Trolly yelled "Halibut!". We were all hoping for the Flat kind, but most people would give just about anything for a beautiful Calico out of the surf and you got THREE! :Envious:

Chris, you are so much fun to fish with. You had us laughing all day long. I'm glad no one took a picture of me helping you into your neoprene waders. That was a chore!
Thanks for the entertainment and the jokes... by the way, I still believe in Santa Claus.
We will get you on your first surf Halibut one of these days. Better yet, you now have the knowledge and the skills to get one on your own and you told me that you are determined to do so.

I had a great time... we will do it again very soon. But I have news for you two... this trip was only rated a level two (2) on the S.W.A.T. extreme difficulty scale of 1-5. Are you ready for level 3 or 4 next time...? Remember... the higher the difficulty rating, the bigger the fish! We'll get Dana out there with us next time!

You don't owe me anything Terry... pay it forward and friends never keep score. I do what I do for people who I know would do the same for me. :Big Grin:

Mike, thanks for your help with our "Legendary" friends... and as always, for the company.

Terry, thanks for treating all of us to lunch. Not very often that someone beats me at my own game... I wasn't fast enough in slipping the waitress the credit card.

It looks like you guys had an awesome day on the water catching some nice calicos.. Some very impressive bass from the surf anytime let alone winter time. I'm not in suprised as I have mentioned before no fish is safe when SWAT on the job.

Welcome to the surf Pontoon and Trolly..It looks like Wingnut has provided you guys with some weapons of mass destruction topped off by the Trolly Crawlers. LOL.. So now that your geared up and ready for when the halibut invade the beaches. I hope you guys will return for many more adventures on the sand. Another successful mission. Well done guys.

Chunky looking calicos! Some of them surf calicos (kinda noticed they have a really blended or subdued checkering to them) are as big or bigger than ones I see on the cattleboat reports! Kudos!

Loved reading the report and seeing the pictures. Knowing Wingnut, you guys probably covered a bunch of miles and cast a million times.

Always cool to learn some new fishing techniques.

Trolly and Pontoon, you guys drastically tip the scale in your favor by hitting the surf ith the SWAT crew. :Envious: Some of us aren't so lucky to be invited to fish with the elite. Man, those are some nice looking calicos especially from the surf. That is a day to remember. Good fishing, good food, great friends, can't beat that combintion.

He kept me laughing all day long with all of the jokes and crazy antics not to mention totally ruining my belief in Santa Clause ...I hope I never see you working in the mall dude
I'm already scouting out the next Trolltoon surf session so we can get Chris that first surf flattie and I'm sure it will come together!

That looked like one hell of a nice trip fellas! Thanks for the report Terry. For about 15 minutes there, I was living vicariously through your report while sitting at my computer at work!

I can see it now. All Arthur needs to do is get licensed and bonded and a top dollar halibut guide service will be born.

Thanks again my friend.

Wow, what a memorable day. Mr. Pontoon, I know exactly how you feel. That's because about two years ago, I was standing right next to Arthur when he put me on my first ever surf Halibut. Then a few months later, we were standing side by side when I got my first legal surf Halibut. :Big Grin:

When you fish with Arthur, he cares more about YOUR success and happiness than he care for is own. Let me guess, you guys fished ahead of him in the surf all day right? He exemplifies what Team 57 is all about. Only a few will have the experience and pleasure of fishing with the SWAT Crew, and those memories will last a lifetime. Well done gentlemen!

Looks like a few more halibut addicts have been born! Your first halibut and first calicos! Those calicos are definitely trophies, and I am sure that there will be many more trophies for you guys on later SWAT trips. It's definitely a good time fishing with Arthur and Mike. Even if the fishing isn't the best (and that's rare) the company more than makes up for it. Can't wait to read part 2.

Congrats on a killer day!

thanx wingnut and bones specialy.Had a great time with great friends.Man my legs and arms are so sore. What can i say it was all good, even the women that was walking her dog that asked pontoon if he caught any fish? He said no on purpose and she said good hope you do not catch any . wow, peta must have been there. Cant we all get along. It was all new for me using lures and swim baits on the surf. My first halibut caught was in 1959 off balogna creek before marina delrey was built by the army corps of enginers and filled with water.I have caught a lot of halibut bounce balling or drifgting too. Newport bay on plastics also. But never in the surg except with bait. I will try next week by my house with lures and hope to catch my ist on articals. Teryy thanx for the good company man you were on fire.Thanx again arthur and mike we will do it again. Teamtrolltoon are hitting up otay lake this weekend and hope to post a report. Terry,

Thanks for a first class report taking us though Team Trolltoon's day in the surf at Boot Camp! So sad that I had to back out at the last moment and not be able to witness your successful day in the surf personally.

Great report...looks really cold out there!
Actually it wasn't too cold at all with all the ground we were covering. Casting those Lucky Crafts kept me pretty warm.

AWESOME!

Congratulations Terry!
Calico's & Halibut ........ sounds like a perfect day on the beach!

Really nice to see you & Chris out there with Arthur!
I was thinking about you guys on Sunday!

GO TEAM TROLLTOON!

See you guys soon!
Dana, it was a blast being out there with Arthur, Bones and Trolly. The only thing that would have made it better would have been having you there with us. We need to set another trip up so you can be there.
 Thank You My Friend.:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

Daaaaaaaaaang. CHUNKY fish guys.....almost makes me with I had a beach within a couple hundred miles of my house. Congrats!
Smitty, thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure with the weather you are having up your way the beach would be a pretty good get away.
Thanks again and I'm looking forward to reading your book. I hope you have included the hike up to Gem and Waugh Lakes out of Silver Lake. That was one of my favorites!

Team Trolltoon rides again.:Big Grin::Cool::Wink:

Terry , What a amazing day you & Chris had fishing with Wingnut & Bones .

This was a great read. I also enjoyed the photos . Man , what a day.

Thanks for posting up
Thank You Patrick! Yes it was an amazing day fishing with Arthur and Mike.:Thumbs Up:

Arthur, I knew from the moment we talked about this trip that it was going to be a memorable one. From the moment I opened the care package you sent Trolly and I knew that we were going to have a very successful outing.
I mentioned before but I've got to say it again.....This trip will be remembered as one of my all time favorites!
I've already resolved myself to get back to my work out routine because the next time out I'll be ready for at least a level 5 S.W.A.T Team outing and I'll be just as determined to up the ante to land and release my first legal halibut.
Thank you again for your Frienship and everything you did to make this first trip with the S.W.A.T. Team a very very memorable day.
Thank You again My Friend.

The first spot is ohhh so awesome . Surprised that you guys didnt pull out bones, there are many at that location.
The whole day I was in awe of the scenery, the ocean and the weather. I'm looking forward to going back to see what other species I can get.

JerryG
Jerry, thank You for your reply and yes it was definitely an awesome day with the S.W.A.T. Team in the surf.
I'm already thinking about the next trip.
Thanks again.

That looked like a great day to spend with your friends....most excellent report Terry, nice looking bass!

TD
Thanks for your reply Aaron. It was definitely a great day with Good Friends.

Rich, I was amazed at the coloring of the calicos we were catching and yes we did cover a lot of ground and casted countless times but all well worth it in the end. Thanks for the compliments on the post and I'll be talking to you soon My Friend.:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

Trolly and Pontoon, you guys drastically tip the scale in your favor by hitting the surf ith the SWAT crew. :Envious: Some of us aren't so lucky to be invited to fish with the elite. Man, those are some nice looking calicos especially from the surf. That is a day to remember. Good fishing, good food, great friends, can't beat that combintion.
The scales were definitely tipped in our favor with Arthur and Mike. That is for sure. You're right about the combination of good friends, good food and it just made the fishing all that much better!

Thanks for the reply Frank! It was definitely fun to be out in the surf with these guys and yes, catching such quality fish was the biggest bonus of all.:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

Lots of calicos from the surf. Nice job everyone.
Thank you Cappo!

What a fun day!
I'm still smiling that's for sure. Pontoon and Trolly.......It was a pleasure just hanging with the legends in the surf. I do have a suggestion for Trolly next time though......BEANO!!!!...And pleanty of it...
Chris farted soooo much that he couldn't shake that skunk smell off :Skunk:
He kept me laughing all day long with all of the jokes and crazy antics not to mention totally ruining my belief in Santa Clause ...I hope I never see you working in the mall dude
I'm already scouting out the next Trolltoon surf session so we can get Chris that first surf flattie and I'm sure it will come together!
Terry....You were definately the hot stick of the day and your dedication impressed me for sure. Congrats on the "Mission Accomplished" and Thanks alot for the meal and a day that I will remember for a long time!
Mike, I can't thank you enough for spending the day with us. I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation with you and the entire day I was in awe of the knowlege you shared. I'm definitely looking forward to the next outing and like I mentioned to Arthur, I plan to be able to bump the intensity level up another notch.
I also want to thank you too for your Friendship and for making this first outing with the S.W.A.T. Team a very memorable outing!
Thanks again Mike!:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

_Bullets
Thank you very much Greg!:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up: I'm glad you enjoyed the read and I agree Arthur was one heck of a guide. He helped me reach the goal I set to get that first halibut.

Blackwater, that is awesome! I'm hoping Arthur is there when I get my first legal halibut!:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:
You're right, Arthur looked out for us the entire day and he did fish right behing us. That is until Trolly and I just ran out of stem.
Thanks again for the reply!

Looks like you guys had a great day! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you Sue. It definitely was a Great day!

Bravo to Arthur and Bones for "passing it forward" and sharing their love of this great sport we call fishing. But really, it's about making new friends, and creating some lifetime memories in our beautiful state. Kudo's to you guys for being such good stewards to the growing SWAT team! Mikey
