View Full Version : One Persistent Duct Striper

Hit the duct this a.m. and it was windy and cold. Water barley moving at about 1/8 open gates. I'm throwing the usual traps, bucktail and pointer for nothing. I switch to a super fluke and am working it just under the surface. I can see the bait the whole way and I am working it slow and giving it some slight twitches. Half way back I see a striper come up and engulf it. It's hooked but immediately does the duct roll and dive and unhooks himself. I keep retrieving and it comes back and nips it. I keep retrieving and it comes back a third time and I see it inhale the whole fluke and I set the hook again and it is on. A decent battle ensues and I land it. I pop the cherry on my new set up with this healthy duct striper. It was 26 3/4" long and close to 9lbs.

I work the area for another 15 minutes but nothing else. Cold and getting windier by the minute, I decide to call it a morning.

Good job out there Zoli :Applause:.
I went out Thursday evening until 3.30am for a big fat skunk. It was cold that night, all of my rod's guide & reel was frozen, had to break them off every time .

Thanks Khanh. I wanted to mention that it was busting at the seams full in the stomach and intestines with the shrimp salad.

Yeah it has been below freezing for a a couple of weeks except for last night and this morning. The cloud cover kept the temps up. Sort of like a lid on a pot, lol.

Thanks spooky.

fishinone, I know because I saw it the whole time. The water has really cleared up at the duct since the flow has reduced. I had eye contact with the fish the whole time from the first hook up, to getting off and then turning and hitting it again and then swallowing it for the third time. It was a thrilling experience, especially in the small patch of glassy water I was working that had a wind block, I could see the fluke the whole retrieve.

Oh yea! That's just way too much fun!

I've got to get out and fish. I've been lurking for weeks now.

Like this cold? I stopped for 5 minutes on the way to work this morning and this was the result. Cold is fine with me but the wind was blowing pretty hard early and I hate the wind with the cold.
