Lake Mission Viejo: The plan was to fish on Saturday because friends had to work on Friday. Throughout Saturday morning it poured like crazy so I wasn’t sure if anybody was up to fishing today. Nobody got back with me on Friday. Glenn texted me at 5:45am with me and Tom are almost there. Ohhh crap! I gotta get up even after the alarm went off at 5am. I get to the lake after 6am for our boat rental. Today was literally a quick slayage trout fest! The lake was stocked on 11/19/09 with 10,000lbs of Mt. Lassen Sierra Bows.
I had a free 4 hour boat rental pass so all Glenn and Tom needed to pay for was their $10.00 guest entry pass. We get our boat rental just after 6:30am and maybe 5 boats had been rented before us. The lake was nearly empty of anglers for a Saturday as the lake is still loaded with trout. The 3 of us were the only ones who came in with limits of trout. The limit is 4 trout per person at this lake. We dominated big time and everyone is like whatcha guys using? Don’t answer too quickly guys! Glenn says one thing as Tom says something completely different Ok! What’s the answer here? You have a 50/50 chance at getting it right!
It didn't matter what we used. Myself and Glenn were just about done with our 4 fish limit in less than 2 hours when Tom hadn’t caught a fish yet. So I look at his rig and change it up. Tom had a small sliding egg sinker tied on and the trout wouldn’t touch his bait. Once the egg sinker sits in the grass it’s pretty much dead weight here. You need a water bubble for weight or you won’t get bit. The sliding egg sinker takes the bait into the grass and buries it.
We tried lures but all they did was follow it. I couldn't get bit on opening day with lures either. These fish are being picky! We saw a few bass about 7-10lbs cruising around the area. A guy fishing on a dock said he saw a huge fish estimated to be about 15lbs.
Tom finally managed to land his 4 fish limit and we were done in less than 4 hours of fishing. It was a great and fun day out. After getting home it rained a few hours later. We got of the lake and back home in time. Here are the pics!
Glenn lands the first fish of the day. Hurry up and net the fish Glenn! Those clouds have rain in them dude!

These Sierra Bows have some cool colors on them. They have red gills, red tails, and are covered in dots. They put up a decent fight but nothing compared to the Nebraska Trout.

Tom finally starts getting bit to finish off his 4 fish limit as we waited.

The day was cloudy with some sunshine. It wasn’t too cold but pleasant out. These clouds looked like rain was coming. A few hours later that’s exactly what they dropped on south Orange County. The clouds covered Saddleback Ridge.

Lake Mission Viejo will be stocked next Thursday (12/3/09) with 4,500lbs of the Nebraska Trout. Nothing compares to how hard these fish fight and the leaps they make when hooked. The Nebraska Trout will bust off many anglers so leave the 2lb line at home. The first trout tournament of the season will be on Saturday December 5th from 6am-11am. We need more kids to participate as we have 3 divisions. Kids 11 and under, teens 12-17, adults 18 and older. Cost is $4.00 for kids and $5.00 for teens and adults. Blind bogey sets the single weight for everybody. The most weight of fish will do you no good. Prizes include rod combos, tackle packages (stringer, line, lure, powerbait) gift cards to Sport Chalet in amounts of $10,$15,$25,$30,fishing nets, and soft sided tackle bags. The single heaviest fish of the tournament will receive a $30 gift card to Sport Chalet. If you don’t catch any fish during a tournament, then you’ll receive a free 4 hour boat rental pass.
