Went out early this morning to recon some new areas!!!! The goal was to locate a productive spot that I could lead my S.W.A.T. Commanders to in the future.

I arrived to find that I had underestimated how the swell would affect the area that I chose to recon. As always from afar it does not seem too bad until you actually reach the water after a nice hike and conditions are horrible! Well I was here and it took some effort so I should give it a try for awhile!!

Spot # 1 only produces a lot of pesky Torpedo Smelt and my first Surf Doughnut! I had seen a 2 foot Leopard Shark working the area of my feet and I had spooked it on several occasions! A few long casts later I hook up on a Leo of the same size. I worked it in and then things got weird. He had the tail hook of the LC in his lip and somehow managed to hook his tail in the front hook and became a Surf Doughnut!!

Spot 2 produced a few smaller Calico like this.

Spot 3 produced a few more Torpedo Smelt and a YFC.

At this point I was starting to get tired of battling the swells and the long hikes so I decided to return to the spot that I was led to by the S.W.A.T. Commanders that is usually calm but when I arrived it was not any better than where I had already tried!!

As I step into the water there are birds crashing bait just outside the surf line and moving to my right. I try to keep up with rapid casts of the LC into the area.

I then get a good hit and go bendo on a nice Calico!

These pics do not do justice to its size as it is to close to the camera..
This is an in the water shot where he has almost half of the LC buried in his mouth..

I work back to my starting point for a few pancakes until this Flattie decided to play.
She went about 24” and released to play another day!!!

I then got worked on what I believe was another very nice Calico that took me into the boilers and kelp. I worked it several times giving it line to swim free and come back with the pressure but it won the battle and sawed me off!!

I had been worked by the hikes, the waves and now a nice fish so I decided to call it a day and make the long hike back to the truck and head home!!!!

Good size calicos and a solid legal. Surf fishing doesn't get much better than that! Congrats on another good outing Steve. Hopefully I have the same luck when I hit the surf tomorrow.

Great Job Steve....Sorry for the late response but I've been going through some tough stuff. Those checkers are sure addicting aren't they. Glad you got the mixed bag. I talked with Arthur and he confirmed where you were. Man.....What a hike!
Between you and I .....we will have the whole socal area mapped out for SWAT in no time!
