S.W.A.T. Crew initiation - New Member “Jerry G”

Profile: S.W.A.T. was hosting a new member today. Jerry is a veteran kayak & surf fisherman for 30+ years. His resume is extensive and quite impressive. Active participant in the MLPA fight. Practice “Catch & Release”. Has the utmost respect for the ocean and its resources. And most importantly… a Pug owner.

Battle Plan: Starting point - The OC in the grey light. Then depending on the action & conditions, move North and work our way back to home base. We hit a total of three areas today.

General Conditions: Cool & clear morning. Sunny & mild afternoon. Slight offshore wind. Outgoing tide. Moderate surf. Water quality good to excellent with little salad. Poor baitfish presence.

Techniques:
Bones - Hardbaits & dropshotting
Jerry G. - Hardbaits, dropshotting & swimbaits
Wingnut - Hardbaits & dropshotting

Total fish count - Approx. (All Released). Today was all about the “Quality”, not the quantity.
(8) Short Halibut
(2) Legal Halibut 23", 30"
(3) Calico Bass
(2) Sand Bass
(1) Yellow Fin Croaker
(1) Smelt

Here are the pics of our mission…

Mike & Jerry, it was a pleasure to go into battle with you guys. Jerry, you came through with flying colors! I don't know why it took so long for us to finally fish together, but it was great working the sand with you. Seems like we've been friends all along... Until our next mission, carry on "Soldier."

Have a great week everybody, thanks for tuning in for this week's S.W.A.T. report.

Looks like another solid SWAT outing. Even though the numbers didn't cooperate, the quality definitely made up for it with a monster flattie and some good size bass from shore. The fact that those fish came so late in the season makes this trip especially impressive too. Congrats on the big girl release Arthur, maybe I'll have a chance at sticking her now. Probably not though, I don't have the signature Wingnut mark on my LCs.

Glad to hear that Jerry had an awesome time as well! Hope to run into you sometime in the surf man.

Sorry to hear about the break off Mike, but you'll be the guy to stick the 30in next trip to make up for it.

Now if only those halibut could stick around for another week or two...

Arthur, I don't know how many times I can say that your reports are nothing less than amazing! You guys are as hard core fisherman as there can be.......Staring out before the sun rises and ending up at sunset. Where does the energy come from!.........Oh, but wait a minute, I might just get to find out first hand when we hit the surf Sunday.:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

Time to chime in......

Just another day in the surf with some great guys. I was really impressed with Jerry's dedication to the sport of fishing. He is a very knowledgable individual with some very enlightening points of view regarding our fisheries. He definately has the stamina to spend 10 hours in the combat zone. I personally wouldn't want to spend that much time in the water in just board shorts. Good job hanging in there Jerry!!!
Arthur....What can I say bro.....You da Man!
When you asked me which direction I wanted to fish in and I said "Straight out Dude.....That's where they were the last time" ......... No sooner did I say that......You were hooked up with the beast....LOL
To stick the biggest girl of the day on your first cast was awesome. You were in halibut heaven after that and I could see the cheek cramps you were getting from smiling for the next 3 hours!!!
Thanks once again for the new toy,the great company and the awesome ribeye dinner to finish the day off.
I'm already working on our SWAT floatation suits for the next outing....LOL

Art, your reports are getting too predictable. Exotic locations, nice fish, great company, good food and beautiful girls. :Envious: Mix in a skunk report here and there to even things out will ya? Wingnut Nation lives! I would think that the Halibut bite would die off by now, but hopefully it will continue for a couple more weeks until I can make it out there with the Team. Props for letting the big flatty go, i would have had a tough time with that call.

Thanks BSP. I hope to fish with you sometime. I think there will be few halibut to catch in the weeks/ months to come. As long as we don’t get any heavy rains there always seems to be a few halibut that stay shallow through out the winter. Definitely fewer in numbers though. Usually about the second week in March about the time the Fred Hall show rolls in to town. It’s game on. I consider this start point of each new halibut surf season…

Thanks Steve. The fishing was slow overall but persistence was well rewarded. Even if we didn’t catch anything it would have been a great day on the water spent with good company but SWAT refused to be defeated. Although we hit our targets it was a tough one the enemy won a couple battles capturing some weapons…LOL

Very true about the season winding down. December, January, and February are pretty dead as far as legal halibut are concerned. My dad caught a legal in February, but that strikes me as more of a fluke than a definite pattern. Santa Ana winds can create a decent bite with the few days of warm weather though. I've heard guys say that March brings in the halibut before. Is that because of the return of warmer weather and water temps, or is it because they come in to spawn? I think it's the latter, but am kind of curious what other guys think.

But I can promise you this, you will have a great time, learn a lot and it'll be a day spent with friends that you will always remember.

Lead by example... is there any other way to do it? Maybe we can bring some interest to the sport, awareness to our natural resources and help people gain respect for our oceans. We can make a difference, one rod at a time.

Jerry definitely has what it takes to stand side by side with us on the front line. There is no quit in him at all and that's what I like.
As for the big Hali, like I told you & Jerry, the only reason that I got it is because my lure hit the water first... that fish was already primed and ready to go. I was smiling so much because sometime I can't believe how lucky I get.

Arthur, Congrats on yet another nice Flattie!!! You are getting closer to you goal of putting you know who in his GRAVE!!!!!!!!

PS. You must have sent a subliminal message to me as I paid visit today to the last spot without looking at your report!!!!!!
It would have been nice to have you working the sand with us on Sunday Steve. But now I know that you were busy preparing for your own covert operation. Glad that you had a good mission, even though it was a costly one. But things can always be replaced. Congrats on the brute Calico!

That looks like a really nice spot that you guys found. I wish I could find a place like that! Good job on the nice halibut!
Plenty of spots out there to be found, just put in the time & effort to look for them and you will be rewarded.

Btw, Lauren said thank you for Madelein's birthday gift, she loves it. U da man.
But Skunk reports are no fun Phuong! You better hurry up and hit the surf with us buddy, before the bad weather sets in. As for releasing the big fish... easy call, I'll wait for that bleeder, maybe I'll get one before Thanksgiving. No problem on the gift for your daughter, enjoy.

Awesome report as always Buddy! Thanks for taking us through a day with you veterans. Makes my day at work MUCH easier :)
Thanks Mav, haven't seen you out there fishing lately Chris... but then, work always comes first. Hope all is well with you and the family.

great job out there guys! awesome report, pics and results...congrats!
What's up man... you & your bro been fishing lately? Hope you guys been getting a few!

Thanks Mike. I can’t wait to see the SWAT floatation suits. It was awesome fishing and hanging with you guys. I also want to give a big thanks once again to Arthur for the toys and a great dinner.. Oh and Mike I have a picture of you fighting one of the big fish that got away. Check it out down at the bottom.

Here's another combat shot of Mike.

Jerry, once again thanks for coming out and sharing the adventure with us. I've always had the utmost respect for you and now it's warranted.
You actually gave me the idea for the S.W.A.T. floatation device... it's gonna be great!
No problem on the goodies and dinner... pay it forward my friend.
You'll get a chance to fish with Marc one of these days if he's not too busy with his college schedule. He reminds me of a junior version of you... all systems go, all the time!
That's too funny about the enemy winning some battles on Sunday... that they did, just ask Mike, I think most of the captured weapons was his!

Nice job out there guys very nice Legal Arthur and JerryG O and Mike Respool your reels lol no more losing the legals or your new nick name will be "Mikelosealot" lol..
The dinner story to funny..

See you guys soon..

I see S.W.A.T. BOOTCAMP is back up and operational!!!!:Guns:

WELCOME JERRY G.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:Beer Toast:

You guys traveled some distance today to the starting point and ended up much closer to home I see. Numbers are not always as satisfying as it is to quality!!!!!:Bug Eyes:

Very true about the season winding down. December, January, and February are pretty dead as far as legal halibut are concerned. My dad caught a legal in February, but that strikes me as more of a fluke than a definite pattern. Santa Ana winds can create a decent bite with the few days of warm weather though. I've heard guys say that March brings in the halibut before. Is that because of the return of warmer weather and water temps, or is it because they come in to spawn? I think it's the latter, but am kind of curious what other guys think.

Santa Ana winds are everything in the winter. During winter I fish halibut in the surf pretty much exclusively on days when the Santa Anas are blowing. It makes for perfect conditions (Calm, clear water, bright, and sunny also seems to draw in the bait fish)for halibut anytime of the year when the winds are blowing off shore. I have caught halibut from the surf in December, January, and Feburary. There are definitely fewer fish but the quality seems to be better. Better ratio on the legals for sure. One time A couple years the santa Ana's were blowing hard on Christmas day. I was dying to fish and my wife told me I had 3 hours to fish before we had leave to visit family for dinner. I made a mad dash to the beach. When I got there conditions looked great and with in 15 minutes I had caught and released a 30" and a 25".. I was content with the mission accomplished I left them biting and headed home.

It may be in part because of their spawn but I believe the halibut are drawn to the beaches each season in March by the grunion. The first run takes place around mid March depending on the full moon /tides.

Actually the Fall bite has been pretty decent Marc. Hopefully that will continue into early Winter when the baitfish moves closer to the shoreline. And if you're one of those who believes that Halibut spawn twice a year, then well...
I'm sure you will get the chance to fish with Jerry very soon, now that he's a part of the Crew.

It's funny how the fall bite has been better than the spring bite this year. The second spawn... never heard that, but it makes sense why those big girls would come in shallow. Baitfish presence+urge to incubate eggs= Big Momma halibut from the surf.
Can't wait for the next SWAT outing then!

Solid info on the Santa Ana's Jerry. I'll be more willing to try a winter trip now. I've gone occasionally when the Santa Ana's were blowing before because of the nice weather, but I'll be sure to hit up the beach as much as possible when the conditions look like that again. That high ratio of legals is a nice motivator. Great story about the Christmas halibut too. A 30in and 25in fish in the middle of winter is an awesome trip!

The grunion... that makes sense since halibut follow the grunion the rest of the year. It's probably the first large influx of baitfish that moves the halibut shallow, and then by that time there are enough macs/sardines/smelt/anchovies to keep them there for the rest of the year.

Excellent info. Jerry... scary how much we think alike. Less shorts... more legals in the winter months, I've experienced similar results.

WOW great Report and pics! Your report has inspired me to get back into surf Fishing. I scored on some breathable Hodgman waders, picked up some Old Navy fleece and im pulling out the wind breaker. Im looking for some Booties next, what do you guys suggest? Do you use Booties? Im on a budget right now but i plan to cover some ground when i hit the surf. Jerry was toughing it out with the board shorts but being that im only 5'9 at 150lb, I get chilled to the bone pretty quick. So better to be comfy and out last the bite, then to be uncomfy and want to head home.

Great Job Guys, That seemed like a day to go in the books.

Arthur and Mike use boot foot waders because they fish on nasty terrain. I use surf shoes or wading sandals on the same nasty terrain because I just fish in board shorts and a wetsuit jacket year round. Barefoot for sandy beaches without rocks. As long as my core is warm, it doesn't really matter how cold my legs get. Also, once your legs get numb you stop caring!

For stocking foot waders though, I'd look into the Croc style shoes. I've got a pair of Speedo ones that I let my buddy use (too big for me so they thrash my feet), that would fit perfectly over stocking foot waders and give you great traction.

http://www.amazon.com/Speedo-Mens-Buoy-Water-Shoe/dp/B0010OH8W8

I found mine at Big 5, but I'm sure you could find a pair online.

Good luck with your surf fishing outings! It's very addicting and is my favorite form of fishing. Halibut are the best IMO, but surf perch and corbina can provide a lot of fun too.

Great! Go back out there and kick some Butts! Looking forward to your reports. I saw some decent booties for a good price at Sport Chalet. Booties are a must if you have stockingfoot waders. Stockingfoot waders with booties are more comfortable. But sometimes, when I feel lazy, I just wear my bootfoot waders.

Whoops... my bad... you'd think by now I'd be able to remember what gear you guys use in the surf. :Embarrassed:

You should give the boardshorts a try in the colder months sometime Arthur. Just think about it, no nasty filled up waders that you have to walk around in and empty out. My secret is just to repeat the phrase, if you don't mind, it won't matter over and over again!

I have a wet suit as well but I only wear it when I go kayaking during the dead of winter. Regardless Surf fishing or kayaking I never hit the beach with out my booties. I would highly recommend wearing booties or water shoes to anyone fishing (walking) the beach. It will help protect your feet from glass, sharp shells, and stingers (rays) all of which are commonly found along southern california beaches. Yeah they keep your feet warm too.
