Red Drum

After reading so many Albacore reports, I couldn’t take it any longer, so I decided to hook up the “Big Drum and head to San Diego/Shelter Island with my good buddy Martin “the looper.
We initially were going to fish around the 390 bank area but at the last minute we opted to head for the Butterfly bank. At 6:30am we came across some Bonito boiling on some small bait fish around the San Salvador Knoll area, so we threw the jigs in and began trolling. We got stopped within two minutes on the black/purple 4 ¾ inch Yo-Zuri Hydro Mag, by a 28 lb Albacore. That smaller plug was the hot ticket, thanks Josh “Team Striper for the tip.
This was Martin’s first Albacore, way to go Martin!

We only got one jig strike on that first stop, and right when were about to start trolling again, we saw a big boil off the back of the boat, so I immediately butt-hooked a big sardine and cast it out. Within 5 seconds I got picked up by this scrappy 29 pound Albacore. Sweet!

As we trolled towards the Butterfly bank, we got four more single jigs strikes. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get a bait bite going. After getting 6 nice size Albacore, with a combined weight of over 150 pounds, we turned the boat around and started heading back to Point Loma at 10:30am.
Here is a picture of the first six Albacore that we caught.

On the way back we trolled three Yo-Zuri hydro mags as we cleaned the fish.

Right after I cut the fillets off the last fish, we got a double hook-up on two more nice quality size Albacore.

We ended up filling two coolers full of quality Albacore meat and made it back home by 5pm for a nice bar-b-que with the family and then a game of badminton with my daughter. What a glorious Independence Day…..God Bless America!
Till next tide,
