View Full Version : Chasing Tails... Got Butts Instead. Saturday 11/7 Southern Surf Session.

Got a phone call from my buddy Anthony (Beans77) last night saying that he saw some very large fish jumping in the surf down in his turf and didn’t know what to really make of it. He said that they are too big to be Smelts, Mullets or YFC. Many of them jumping and chasing bait in the surf within casting distance. I’m thinking WSB… he is thinking more like Yellowtail. What’s with the recent Yellowtail sightings in the So. Cal surf… is El Nino here already…? Since the swells is projected to get pretty big on Sunday, I figured that I might as well get my fix in the surf today instead of tomorrow. Let’s see if I can pull one of these mythical Yellowtails out of the surf… probably as hard to do as pulling a Striper out of the suds. But it’s the ocean… you never know. So I took the long drive South and met up with Anthony in his backyard at grey light.

Conditions: Cool, overcast morning giving way to spotty sunshine. Mild to moderate surf. Clear water with very little salad. Scattered amount of small baitfish presence. Incoming tide.

Techniques: Throwing hard baits & drop shotting.

We hit the sand at grey light and found that the Halibut were stacked up close to the shoreline. We located a long & deep trough running parallel to the shoreline and the Flatties were on the chew. We laid waste to a small population of shorts and I was lucky enough to nail one very nice legal. We were pulling them in and shaking them off one after another… fun stuff.

For some reason, I was losing fish left & right on the dropshot. I farmed three or four decent size fish that took nice drag runs. Somehow, they all came unbuttoned during the fight. Hate it when that happens!

Fish count: A few Perch, many short Flatties and one legal. All did their jobs entertaining and were released to delight another day.

Here are some pics of the morning session for your viewing pleasure.

The first short Butt in the grey light.

Most of the shorts were this size or smaller.

The Kayak Fishing Mafia were out in force today. This guy was absolutely slaying them right in front of us just out of casting range. Every time I looked up he was on a bendo. He must have landed at least 2-3 legals. Nice work!
I didn’t get your name but it was very nice to meet & talking to you.

It was great fishing with you again Anthony. Thanks for inviting me to fish in your backyard. I should make this drive more often, seeing that I always seem to do pretty well down here. We’ll get those Yellows next time. :!!!:

Take care everybody, gotta go… I got a phone call coming in… it’s Steve (Flyngby)… ohhhhh yeahhhh! :Secret:

Congrats on another fine day!!

Man, more YT sightings! Maybe winter surf fishing will stay nice if the swells cooperate. El Nino does mean more rain though...

That's a 27in halibut? If you didn't do a tape shot I would have guessed 30in at least. It's interesting how the flatties vary so much with weight and girth. Any idea on the weight?

Congrats on another great trip Arthur, and glad to see Anthony is doing well. Did he attract any interesting wildlife on his home turf today?

Man, you are all over the place. What's the furthest you've driven to surf fish? Your GPS unit must be loaded with spots, like to get my hands on that little gem. Starting a new job that will finally give me more freedom to fish. Once I get settled i'll hit you up for some tips. keep up the nice work.

Wingnut,

NICE! Good going on that finding that larger fish. I think I know what was making those boils your buddy saw. I doubt they were yellowtail. Yellows make a big swirls when they boil. White sea bass are not known for being jumpers either. I would have to say halibut on the other hand are flyers but I doubt it was halibut.. No mistaking a flying halibut..

I suspect your friend saw a school of feeding bonito. They splash and will jump completely out of the water chasing bait (just like tuna).Their behavior fits the profile with what your friend described seeing. Plus they seem to be all over the place at the moment. I fished one day last week and I pulled 6 bonito from the surf and I dumped a couple more. I've also heard from others who have been getting them in the surf lately..

Oh and by the way the kayker is one of my Dad's buddies. My dad is a member of that Kayak Fishing Mafia. He fishes down there a lot.

Wingnut,

I did end up with three - nice to chat with you guys and hope to see you down my neck of the woods again. Only had three of the mafia out this morning - Danny in the blue yak scored a big one as well. I normally would toss anything after one back but my freezer was empty and I wanted to make sure I had a Thanksgiving halibut available - - - - - Had a fourth after I left that area and went to one of my other haunts on the way back, let him head on back down for another day. +/- 15 butts up in all for the day and quite a few spotties inside the harbor with the biggest at 18 1/2".

The leopards came out to play after you guys headed up the beach - got taken to the cleaners a couple of times when the line headed out to the horizon and my hobie was slow in turning and getting up to speed.

Also picked up a couple undersize barracuda, in four - five feet of water just off the beach.

http://i435.photobucket.com/albums/qq78/anjcomp/PB070011.jpg

b.t.w. - one mid size halibut did jump completely out of the water - and have seen them do it before there.

Not sure on the weight of the big girl Marc, but we was a fat & heavy... just the way I like them.
Funny you asked about Anthony and the wildlife. There was this cute blonde that kept following me up and down the beach. Everytime I turned around she was behind me smilling. Really nice work out there Nick... you guys really know how to work that area well. One of these days, if I ever decide to pull the trigger on that "Revolution" I've had my eyes on for a while now... I would like to join KFM for a session to show me the ropes. Stuffed Halibut instead of Turkey... now that's a great idea and sounds delicious! I'm going to work on getting that one "unlucky" legal here very soon. Congrats on a productive day with your friends. Those Leos are fun and beautiful fish. One of my fondest surf fishing memories is landing a 50+ on #10 line from the beach a couple of years back and I've had my rod snapped and been spooled before by bigger ones.
Seeing Halibut doing airborn acrobat always get the adrenaline pumping. Take care Nick and I'll see you down there again sometime soon. Oh yeah, and I did hook up to one of those short slime sticks too, popped off just before I can put it on the beach... just like that one fish you saw me farm on the dropshot. lol.

Sometimes, making subtle changes/enhancements to the LC's makes a world of difference. Most people don't even want to bother with it, but it can be the difference between success & failure and I certainly don't consider it a waste of time. Man, that looks like fun Arthur! As soon as I get those dang holes in my waders fixed I'm going to get my surf gear packed up and head down to the sand.
Great job guys!:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:
Dana & I was just talking about you at dinner tonight Terry. I'm going to pick one of the upcoming Sundays this month and the three of us will hit the surf together. Nothing too outrageous, we'll just hit some of my local surf spots to try and get you on a few Halibut. I have to warn you though... those Flatties are every bit as addicting as any Kitties you pull out of a lake. With a few big Flat Boys under your belt, we're going to dub you "King Halibut".

I've been studying your pictures the last few weeks and those halibut look quite interesting and I'd like to add a legal to my resume. Now only if they had wiskers.

Alright fellas, sorry for the ridiculously late post/reply. I swear I saw YT's jumping in the surf the day before, that's what got Wingut to drive down! Anyways, when I first showed up, I hooked into a... what felt like a nice Butt. It took some major line, then just popped off. That was my 5th cast.

Then caught a small 15 incher or so, and that perch. Watched Wingut pull in a few, and then had to leave for the desert(moto).

As always, excellent surf session with Wingut, always learn something new from him. The guy in the kayak yelled out at one point.. Hey, you Wingut? Then Arthur turned to me and said, who in the heck is that?

Rockstar of fishing...
