From what I've heard they are pretty good. Don't see to many of them though. Best of luck if you're going after them.

Occasionally taken as a by-catch of tuna fisheries. Considered a good food fish (Ref. 5242); marketed fresh and frozen; prepared as sashimi (Ref. 9987).

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but it is my understanding that about the only way you can "catch" a mola mola is to snag one.....and why would you want to do that. Bad bad mojo.

Well, since we're talking about opah...

...I guess I'll be the one to correct you... Opah are caught every year, usually incidental to catching tuna. They eat the same baits as tuna, although the only one I've heard of or seen caught were caught on either bait or cast jigs, I've never heard of one caught on the troll, (I don't think they're fast enough for that). I saw an 85 pounder caught one day and it took a good hour or so to get it in on 30 pound line. It didn't make big long runs like tuna, just sort of a see-saw, take a little, give a little battle down deep. I think all they have to do is turn that broad side into the water at a right angle to the fishermen and they're almost impossible to move. Kinda like trying to pull a flat board through the water, (if you've ever tried to do that you know how much water resistance there is). I hear they taste pretty good although are a little boney however I've never had any myself so I don't know for sure.

I have eaten opah and they are very good. The only place I saw it in the market was in Honolulu. It is a firm fish, but not as firm as tuna. It is not a strong tasting fish, but I like it.
