View Full Version : Successful Recon Mission - Multi-Species Session. Sunday 11/1/09

Been watching and waiting for the last couple of weeks for conditions to improve so the S.W.A.T. Crew can recon a new area that we've had our eyes on for quite some time. :Secret: Sunday's condition looks ideal... with the exception of the full moon in progress, everything else looked pretty good. So Mike (Bones) and I decided last minute to hit the new spot at sunrise. One of our S.W.A.T. member had plans to kill Stripers at Castaic (hope you did well Steve / Flyngby). Told Marc (BSP) that we'll try to meet up with him & his Dad at "The Spot" later in the day after our recon mission.

Conditions: Full moon cycle - mild weather - flat to moderate surf - water clarity excellent in most areas - very little salad - light wind - high tide at sunrise and dropping off to a near negative low tide in the afternoon - fair amount of 2-4" baitfish in the water.

Arsenal:
Throwing hardbaits - Custom Metallic Ayu & MS Anchovy Lucky Crafts.
Dropshotting - 5" Zoom White Ice & Chartreuse Flukes.

Results: The recon mission was a huge success. Lots of life in the area with quality fish present. With the MLPA closures looming... we dedicate one weekend every month to recon new areas to fish. It's inevitable that we will lose... how much we will lose is the question and the forefront of the fight (Support Map 2).
After the recon mission, we cleaned ourselves up with a fresh change of clothes, made the long drive and hit "The Spot". Ran into Marc (BSP), Dad & friend already hitting the area hard. Marc got his PB Flattie! I'm sure his report will be up sometime soon. Congratulations Marc, you deserve it kid!
We continued to slayed until the sun hit the water. Another successful S.W.A.T. sunrise to sunset surf assault in the books! Today's session was really tough physically. We probably walked at least 4 miles of rugged coastline... and enjoying every minute of it.

Fish count (all released).
Bones:
(7) Halibut - 2 Legals 22", 23"
(7) Yellow Fin Croaker
(2) Calico Bass
(1) White Sea Bass
Countless Smelt

Wingnut:
(10) Halibut - 3 Legals 22", 22", 23"
(6) Yellow Fin Croaker
(4) Calico Bass
(1) Sand Bass
(1) Barred Surf Perch
Countless Smelt

What a great day... physically demanding but well worth it! Definitely one of our most strenuous missions. Mike, thanks for driving today, I really needed the rest in between spots. BSP & company... it was great seeing you guys out there. Way to go Marc on your PB Flattie & putting your buddy on his first Halibut! Flyngby - Steve, the S.W.A.T. Crew misses you out there. No doubt that you would have schooled us once again.

Until the next mission... PEACE!

I just CRAWLED out of bed to my PC dude......LOL

My lower back is jacked up big time! We must have walked at least 3 miles of solid rocks in the greylight but we pulled it off and stuck some real quality fish. You and your LC assault were definately the hot stick for the day. Most folks just don't realize that in a typical day in the surf zone (12 hours) you pitch your hardbait a thousand times....all while trying to keep your balance and stay dry a much as possible! That combined with the Two hikes in and out really worked our azzzzes out.........Surf boot Camp for shure buddy!!!
It was a day to remember and we will talk about this one for quite some time. Thanks for the awesome day and the follow up feast at the "Outback" ......Ribeyes Baby!
Can't wait until the next assault....Must heal for now though....LOL

MMMMMM.....I don't think that first bass is a calico now that I look at it. I'm not a SW bass expert by any meens but I think it's a brown kelp bass or something like that. I'm sure somebody will elaborate.

I'm glad that Marc got his PB flattie and a big props to him for the release. Steve........I think you did your back a serious favor by NOT joining us today but you would have loved the area for calicos.......Awesome......Simply georgeous conditions!

Nice slayfest boy's. Mike, the end result is always great, until you wake up the next day asking yourself, what did I do to deserve this? Sucks that our brains still think like 18 year olds, and the body screams to the brain we aren't. Did a bug run to Oxnard for 12 legals saturday, and recovered all the next day. Next time hop on my boat, and I'll drop you off there. Mikey

Arthur & Mike,

Sorry I played "HOOKY" and went on another fishing adventure!! :Crying:

I owed it to Scott (Capt'n) after putting the my "SWAT Team Adventures" a priority vs. his offer to take me out for to his grounds to get on some Linesiders.

Well what can I say!!!! Missed out on another impressive showing by some hardcore adventurers in the Surf!!!!!:Not Worthy::Applause:

The way I see it is that I am fortunate to be invited time and time again when others beg and would probably give up a years worth of fishing trips to be invited to go out with you two!!!!:Beer Toast:

You 2 have me curious as to the new spot! I thought I knew the plan but if there was a long drive between spots I guess you came up with something different!!!!

See!!!!!! There is some foundation to my CURSE!!!!!! I was absent and look what happened!!!!!!

wow. nice catches.

@ Arthur, how do you like the luna with carrot stick? the free spool on that thing is krazy, i still have problem controlling it.

I can cast 3/8 LC with the carrot & curado 200e5 a mile, but i can't do the same with the carrot & luna 203 - I got birdies all the time with this combo.

Arthur and Mike, you guys had an epic day out there. A six species day from the surf is a serious accomplishment, and top it all off with a PB calico and the day is perfect. 2mi over that terrain is no fun... I can't imagine what 4mi would feel like. Thanks for the recon info, and that area looks like it might even become the new "Spot". Only time will tell.

It was great running into you guys as we were leaving. It's always fun to talk with you two, and my dad and I can't wait to hit the surf with you guys again!

Also, what braid were you using (brand & lb test) and what did you think of it if you don't mind me asking? I've been thinking of tossing braid on my Luna for a while now, so I'd like to hear some input on how it performed.

My buddy flipped out when he read your report, and wants to do his own all day surf assault soon. He's got legal halibut on the brain now. You've helped create another surf fishing addict!

I was a bit sore this morning... but nothing that a couple of Tylenol and a few Salonpas patches can't fix. The toughest part of the entire recon was walking for miles over those jagged rocks. I actually had bruises on the bottom of my feet. Remind me to wear my boot foot waders next time we hit that area. You know that I live & die with the hardbait Mike. Between me throwing the stickbaits and you dropshotting... we have the entire water column in the surf covered. Nothing gets by without a LC or a Zoom fluke dancing across their faces. I'm pretty sure that first Bass is a Calico even though it didn't have distinctive Calico markings. Can somebody confirm or help to identify this Bass? I have a free LC for the first person to correctly identify this species. I was actually expecting to see Marc & his crew down there on Sunday. I'm glad they had a good day too. The only thing missing from our great day was Mr. Flyngby.

Wingnut, Congrats on another one of your awesome days at the surf and thanks for another awesome thread. What a bunch of awesome catches you guys had...Hopefully I'll find a nice spot like that one day.

Brian
Thanks Brian, it was a fun report to write. I get like a few dozen emails & PM's every week asking for "My Spots" and I always say the same thing. There is no such thing as My spot, Your spot or Their spot. The ocean belongs to no one and the "Spots" belongs to those who will take the time to find them. They're out there waiting to be discovered and with a fair amount of determination and a bit of luck, you will find them... good luck out there.

Thanks Frank, always fun to write a successful report. I'm gathering up my reels, getting them ready to ship to you buddy... as usual, they're a mess. But I know that they'll be in good hands.

Il Divo is an amazing group. Check out some of their other performances, very talented. I'm going to take my parents to see them when they tour the U.S. The venue that you saw was at the Coliseum in Rome. What a place to hold a concert, can you imagine being there for that? Awesome.

Nice slayfest boy's. Mike, the end result is always great, until you wake up the next day asking yourself, what did I do to deserve this? You speak the truth there Mikey... sometimes your heart tells you to keep going when your body is saying that you can't go on. Nice job on all the legal Bugs... :Envious: I've yet to learned how to hoop.

I find that corbina the most impressive in this report. Good size one for that species!

Nice pics and report guys!
Those are Yellow Fin Croakers, but we did see a lot of big Corbina cruising the troughs right in front of us Rich, a few of them even bumped into our legs as we were working our way through the surf.

Very nice pics........ looks like a perfect day out there!
All sorts of species & lots of marine life = a very fishy spot!

Congrats on the PB checker Arthur!
Thanks Dana... conditions wise, we couldn't have asked for a better day in the surf... very ideal. The big Calico was a nice bonus and come to think of it, that was my PB Yellow Fin Croaker also! :Big Grin:

Another sweet report like usual! Congrats on all the success! That Calico is a really impressive catch from the surf.. And of course you guys managed to catch more legal halis in a day than I do all year. haha. Great report. Keep em coming.
Yeah, the big Calico was a nice surprise. It actually ran into the kelp and was stuck for a moment. I put the reel in free spool and gave it some line. After about a minute of back & forth, the line finally cut through the kelp and freed the fish and I was lucky enough to bring it in. Lipped it in the surf, snapped a couple of pics and back into the water it went.

You SWAT dudes really go on some of the sickest outings. Walking for miles on those stones and rocks must of been brutal on the body.
Love the report and the Il Divo video was awesome. If I'm not mistaken, that venue is at the Roman Coliseum, love to be at that concert.
I have to admit, this trip almost had me crying "uncle". But we gutted it out. It would have been much tougher to take if we didn't have any quality fish to show for it. Definitely need better footwear to attack that terrain the next time around. That Il Divo concert was at the Coliseum in Rome... must have been quite a show.

Now I know thats a virgin fishing hole when the YFC's are that big! :EyePop: No bucket brigade to fish them out.

Thanks Jason, that place has little or no fishing pressure. You can tell by the lack of human pressence (no trash, foot prints, fire pits...). Most people aren't willing to put that kind of effort into catching a few fish... but then, we're not like most people.

Damn, that Amazing Grace video gave me the chills, simply awesome. I think they sang at the Obama inauguration ceremony.

So that's why you missed the Halloween party. Needed your beauty sleep for the SWAT mission huh? It's called old age my friend.
What a great day in the surf, man those are some nice fishies.
Yes they did Vince, Il Divo was paid a nice chunk of change to perform at Barack Obama's Inauguration party.
I missed "one" Halloween party buddy... I didn't say I missed them all Saturday night...

not that i dont like yellowfin croackers but why is that? not too many people seem to care much about yellowfin croakers or any croakers for that matter.
Different strokes for different folks... I like the YFC's not for the fare but for the fight. Pound for pound one of the best fighting fish in the surf.

Wow, awesome job guys. Thanks for the great report
You had a pretty decent trip to the surf yourself Gavin.

Awesome halibuts! I really need to hit the surf again and catch my first halibut!
That's a very attainable goal... go out there and get them!

Till Next time!!!!

Steve
Mike & I kept saying... man Steve would have loved this. We knew that with your fire training, you could have tackled that terrain like it was nothing. That spot isn't going anywhere... we'll all hit it together sometime soon my friend. By the way... your so called "curse" have been banished forever! :Big Grin:

wow. nice catches.

The Luna/Carrot Stix combo matches up pretty well. I have the 253 Luna on the 7' 10" Gold Series rod and the 203 Luna on the 7' 6" Gold Series rod. It's well balanced and comfortable. Play with the tension knob on the reel until you get the cast timing down perfectly... free spool = more distance.

Man, I do miss my old SWAT days going hardcore surf fishing with the NUT. Now Wingnut has an all new SWAT crew and Wingmen. How about a renunion tour for old time sake buddy? Thanks for living life how it should be lived Arthur.

btw - What's up with the flourescent fishing line dude??? I know that Halibut aren't line shy, but wow.
Any time you are ready Phuong. You are a decorated S.W.A.T. Crew veteran with all the battle scars to prove it. You can join us in a tour of duty at any time my friend.
As for the flourescent green line... I didn't think anybody would notice. It matches the jacket I was wearing. Somebody gave me a big spool of the Stren Magnaflex high visibility mono a couple of years back and I decided to throw some on just for fun. Line color doesn't really matter when you're throwing reaction baits anyway. I would never use it in any other applications like dropshotting or anything. But it was pretty cool seeing the big loop streaking out there every time I made a cast.

Arthur, Bones,

wow what a productive day. I told Steve early on that I bet you guys would have an epic day!

By the way, that first bass is a "Johnny Bass", nice fish!

Capt'n
Thanks Scott, we still need to get YOU out there and on to your first surf Halibut.
Seriously...what is a "Johnny Bass?" If there is such a thing... new species for me!

We had a great recon mission Marc and I know that we've been talking about a mission to that area many times. Well, now we know what it's all about. Check it out when you can or we can hit it up together next time. I think you already know the intel on the area but if you want exact details, shoot me a PM and I'll give you all the particulars including GPS coordinates... yes, I did store it in my Garmin Colorado.
The bright line that I was using isn't braid Marc, just plain ol' Stren mono. I don't like to use braided lines.
I noticed the crazed look on your buddy's face Marc... uh oh, he's starting to get the Flattie Fever!

I love this Pic.....LOL

Arthur....."I can hear the rocks rolling Mike.....Hurry....Take the pic"
Mike......."Just one....more....second....DUDE"

Gotta love the focus on the pose EVEN WITH AN IMPENDING TSUNAMI ABOUT TO ROLL OVER YOUR BACK ARTHUR.....

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Wingnut5/Arthur023-8.jpg
And yes, as soon as you snapped the pic, I leaped to my feet and barely outran the Tsunami. Thank God for the S.W.A.T. training. I have to admit, it was so nice to be dry & comfortable all day... the surf conditions couldn't have been any better. :Big Grin:

wingnut/ Bones,

Nice, I fish these spots and Bones wasn't kiddinig about doing a lot of walking. Walking on a nice sandy beach is one thing but the terrian along those stretches of shoreline is a completely different from a normal beach. Also Depending on the spot it can be a tough walk back up from the beach. Glad to see you guys were well rewarded for your efforts. The fall bite has been good this season. I only wish I had more time to fish it..

Just currious how did you guys manage to wade in to the water on the coble stones? Or were you just wading the sandy spots. I've banged up my knees and been sent for a swim trying to walk in to the water on the coble stones. The ones below the water line become very slippery. One of those spots fished has a has a deep trench and depending on the tide a few steps on the cobble submerged stones and you slide right in to about 6 to 8' of water. Anyways good going on the fish guys..

Hope you did well out there at Castaic

I was a bit sore this morning... but nothing that a couple of Tylenol and a few Salonpas patches can't fix. The toughest part of the entire recon was walking for miles over those jagged rocks. I actually had bruises on the bottom of my feet. Remind me to wear my boot foot waders next time we hit that area. You know that I live & die with the hardbait Mike. Between me throwing the stickbaits and you dropshotting... we have the entire water column in the surf covered. Nothing gets by without a LC or a Zoom fluke dancing crossing their faces. Flyngby.

:Big Grin:

That first bass is absolutely a calico bass. It's not uncommon to catch calicos with this tone. They are some what Chameleon and I've noticed that particularly the ones caught (living) in shallow water (tight to the beach) sometimes take on this tone. The distinguishing patches can become very faded but you can still see the calico pattern. I believe they settle on a spot and they're living on it for while they they adapt. You will notice the calicos caught off of deeper water rocks or structure often have a bright white bellies with very distinct calico paterns along the top of their sides and back. Calicos that living deep in the kelp will often take a yellowish tone. I'm sure it helps to protect them them from predators but more so I believe it serves more of advantage for hunting prey. They become more stealth to allowing them to get closer to their prey with out being as easily detected.

I know that Arthur won't mind me elaborating on this one JerryG........

As far as the hike in and out.......It's a tough one but worth the hike. The way we look at it is that we are getting a good workout at the same time that we are hunting flatties. Even if you have a slow day of fishing you still get in the workout....breath some fresh air and have the opportunity to see some really cool stuff like tidal pools, dolphins, seals, driftwood etc. It really is hard to go back to fishing a place like Cherry beach after you have enjoyed the rugged coastline and all of the gems it has to offer.
Overall......It's the experience of being an explorer looking for the adventure and opportunity to have an epic day in the surf.
As far a cobblestones and the rugged terrain that we encounter during these outings....It's all good!
Both Arthur and I have had alot of mishaps in the surf zone while trying to negotiate the next step. We have slipped on rocks, slid down hills,Stepped into deep holes next to boilers not to mention that rogue swell that is 1 1/2 ft taller that all of the rest. Of course that wave comes along right when you are in a bad spot (usually up to your waist already).....LOL
We both push the limit when it comes to trying to reach certain kelp paddy's or boiler rocks and of course....we have paid the price. Bumps, bruises, cuts and scrapes are all part of the SWAT team's day. It comes with the territory for sure. As far as the cobblestone area in this report......It was unusual.....This particular area has no slime on the rocks. That wasn't the real problem. The real problem was that the beach is real steep and the tide was high. The cobblestones were VERY unstable and you couldn't even walk in the water. As the tide receeded only a few small gravel/sand areas came into view. Definately the toughest area we have fished together yet.

Mike & I was just talking about the same thing Jerry... the Spring bite this year was a little tough but the Fall bite is picking up quite a bit, kinda odd... but we're not complaining. Let's take advantage of it before conditions really deteriorate in the coming winter months. Maybe, we'll see you out there in your stomping grounds one of these days Jerry. Mike had the pleasure of meeting you out in the surf before and I'm looking forward to it myself.
When we first got to the spot, I tried to wade in aggressively and found that it wasn't easy treading on those stones, very unstable and the trough drops off very suddenly and is quite deep. We mainly fished from the shore line until we found some sandy patches to stand on.

Not too bad at all... above average that's for sure.

wingnut just curious is that straight braid when your fishing with the LC? and what pound test? anyways looks like my backyard, try abalone during Cbass season, theres tons of legal guys there that eat the large white swimbaits and LCs during greylight. Anyways cool to see that the fishery there is still thriving to bad for the closures, I'm sure the MLPAs are eyeing that spot the most.
The fluorescent line isn't braid, just plain ol' high visibility mono. Somebody gave me a big spool of it and I just spooled it up just for fun. The fish didn't mind it at all. The MLPA is eyeing lots of areas, let's hope they don't get their way 100%.
