Been fishing El Cap pretty regularly. I have no other options at the moment, (time plus $) and with nothing happening at Slowtay and Hodges (for the crappies). Man, I really miss San V. I've said it more than a few times. Like they always say...you don't "really" miss a good thing until its gone. :Bawling:

Anywho...

Yesterday I did the same routine and went for the crappies off the bat. Got to hit them before the sun is on the water because after that...if they are biting at all...your chances are slim. Trolled jigs around hard and it was on the slower side. A few scattered schools in which you had the opportunity to get "doubles" but bites were far and in-between.

The few die harders out there reported the same. Only thing you can do is cover water trolling and drifting and hopefully come across an aggressive bunch.

Caught some, but after a few drifts when the wind came up late morning, decided to switch gears and see if the gill wanted to play. The reports lately were that they had slowed...but ya never know till you try for yourself. I found the first twig I could tie on to in 20 ft of water and set up shop.

Nothing for the first 15 min or so...but prior experience advised to stay put as it seem like these buggers would almost find you. Sure enough it started. First bobber went down. 10 minutes after that...wide open. Mealworms did the most damage out of them, crawlers & wax.

Culled the smaller models until it was time to cut. Left them still biting.

End results

Nice job I am missing the water and need to get on some panfish myself. LOL. You have been saying that all summer BH! BTW - James has been getting into a nice bluecat bite @ Otay off the rock piles. He's getting at least 1, 20 pounder each outing with some added channels mixed in. He's looking for that lake record again. You know what time it is...its only going to get better!

I will get out there soon most definitely. LOL. Thats good James been on them. He is likely to get another 90 pounder going at it like that. I have not made that mark yet but is sure looking for it. I need to break the 80 pound barrier. : ) No better place to do that at than Otay for now. Are those pig gills biting at Otay. There are a few holes that has them 1 plus pounders stacked. My mouth just watering thinking about em in some good ole corn meal.

Yep, they are biting too. You can tell they are around because they are snatching the mackeral or chicken liver off your hook when your fishing for the cats. Check your bait and most of the meat is gone...its them doing it. Just drop a half a crawler down and your in business. James's homeboy Casey caught 9 of those bullgills last week. 4 of them was around 2 pounds.

I did.
