View Full Version : Crappy Morning, Happy Ending - HH 10/24

Jaysuuun and I headed out to HH at around 6:30am, and we were in the water by around 7. We knew the tide wasn't so great but we were hoping the overcast and slight fog would work to our advantage.

We were wrong.

A couple of nibbles was all we got for the first hour and a half.
Then Jason hooked up with a small sandie near some docks (not pictured cauz it was too dinky for his liking).

About an hour later, I was happy to get 2 in a row!
(Spottie pictured below and small sandie not pictured)

We were sure things would start to pick up.

Again, we were wrong.

We fished Simple Green and along PCH towards the bridge for nada.
Jason had been using a swimmie and I was on the DS, hoping one of us would get lucky.
Another hour and a half went by with just a few tiny nibbles.

Finally, I managed to hook up with this little guy near the bridge.

My VERY FIRST CALICO!!! I was so excited, I was jumping up and down in our little inflatable, lol. Nearby hali hunters on the other side of the bridge thought I had a big one but they were probably laughing at my tiny little fish. I don't care, it was my first one so I was happy!

Anyway, Jason switched up to the DS since things were really slow and he mananged to hook another turd roller (not pictured. I wanted to take these pictures but he just wanted to fish. Typical, haha).

Of course, we got our hopes up once again that things were picking up.

Wrong again.

3 hours went by with nothing to show for it.
Went around and made our way back to Simple Green.
As we were wondering where all the halis were, Jason caught 2 short flatties in a row.

Tide started going out and finally finally, things started picking up.

For real this time!

Look what was in this hali's mouth! Had to take a pic.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/6.jpg

Jason's very first calico too! He didn't jump up and down like an idiot though.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/7.jpg

I hooked another flattie then another calico!!

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/8.jpg

Man, I was so happy I could've gone home satisfied...

But I'm SO glad we didn't.

After getting bite after bite and making up for the sucky morning, I got a nice surprise.

Fishing near the bridge, we got stuck on some of the rocks and debris down there.
For like the 4th or 5th time, I was snagged pretty good.
I gave it a big HEAVE.
It moved a little, very slowly, but I was able to pull it up.

Almost.

When I was just about to see what I was snagged on that was weighing down my line... zzzzZZZZZZ!! BENDO!!!
Holy crap I wasn't ready for that, lol.

After a few minutes I worked him up to the top and Jason, boga in hand, called out, "LEGAL!!"
With that, the fish ran again.
This happened about 4-5 times, me bringing him to the top and him fighting his way back down.

Of course he tired himself out and Jason boga-ed his butt (no pun intended).
Our only goal was to get him in the boat. Success!!

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/10.jpg

Legal indeed! My 2nd!! You better believe I was jumping up and down again, this time yelling and screaming too... Mike Iaconelli style. LOL! Drew a little attention from the nearby fishermen again, but this time it was justified. Yeah baby!!!! I HAD to take some shots with him...

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/11.jpg

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/12.jpg

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/13.jpg

Then he was safely released to recover and fight another day.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/14.jpg

WHEW!!! What a rush! So much fun.

After that, the bite slowed down again but of course, Jason was able to catch the last fish of the day.

Headed home around 3pm. After a disappointing start, we went home happy.

Of course, Jason's hating a little cauz he hasn't caught a legal yet...
hopefully Wingnut can help us out with that someday. LOL!

Boo Tesserz! You suck! I still haven't caught a legal since we first started fishing the harbors and you've already managed two. I find the fish and you catch them. LOL j/k

Congrats again on ANOTHER legal flattie. :Not Worthy: Trust me I was just as excited as you when I saw the fish at color. You see? And you wanted to go home early. :Rolls Eyes:

I'll catch a legal flattie someday even if I have to fly to Alaska! :Bawling:

Way to go Tess, thats another nice legal flattie for you! You crack me up, I can just imagine the excitement over the Calico. When are you going to share your hali secrets with Jason? HH is a tough place to fish, we only fished it once and you too did better than us! Lets hook up and do the NPH thing again some time soon!

Don't worry hunny, you'll get yours soon enough...
Just as long as I don't catch another one first.

Eddie!!! Where have you been?
Share my hali secrets? Now why would I do that? lol jk.
I asked him to switch me up to the lure he was using cauz he started getting all the bites and catching all the fish (so of course I was getting jealous :Envious:) and even though we were casting side by side into the same area, I was the one to hook into the legal? Just my dumb luck I guess.
Anyways, yes we definitely have to do the NPH thing again soon!
And you and Jason need to go out on the inflatable sometime. It's no Spotted Fever, but it gets you to the fish! :Big Grin:

Thanks Mr. Ghetto Fisherman! We started out at NPH and just started venturing into HH not too long ago. We like catching a variety of fish.. makes it a little more interesting.

great job on the trifecta, and mucho props on releasing that legal hali!!!

It was actually a fourfecta, LOL. But thanks bergie berg! I know there are a lot of people who would take home and make some fish tacos out of legals like that (which is totally fine with me), but we're not those type of people. We like to get out on the water to have fun and catch fish... not to mention the unspoken competition between Jason and me, hehehe. Btw, I won.

Damn you two keep getting better. Congrats.

Thanks Kevin! You were there when we first started out at NPH and look at us now! :Big Grin: Jason's the fanatic, I just tag along and get lucky from time to time.

 right back at you! lol. If you do end up setting something up... PM please! hahaha. We actually haven't been there in a little while. Haven't seen Steve since Jason's bday trip... it's been too long. And after all this time we still haven't met the infamous Wingnut in the flesh! OR Wingnut Pug for that matter! LOL. We should all meet up sometime soon!

Always a pleasure to read and see your two,s
reports!!!:Big Grin: Great pics of happy fishing and
good times!!!

Thanks Fishshep! Seriously, it was not so happy for the first half of the day. I took a little nap and read a little while Jason kept looking for the bite. At one point I told him to wake me up if he gets a bite. HAHA! Hmm, a part of me feels like he really deserved to catch that legal... but :Secret: don't tell him I said that.

STEVE!!!! Haha, he kinda had to drag me outta bed that morning, and I looked like this: :Tired: but it was totally worth it, obviously (plus I took a short nap while he was looking for the bite, heheh).

Ohhhhh, BASS TRIFECTA, I get it now. lol. Yes I know! I was soooo excited about the calico, we're only gonna fish in that spot every time we go to HH. hahah. And I only lipped them cauz they were SUPER TINY and had little LMB teeth... not sure I'll be doing that with the BIGGER calico we hope to catch elsewhere!

Thanks about the legal... and about the release, we learn from good examples.

We all need to go out again sometime sooooon!!!!! :Fishing Catch:

Size does matter. Congrats on the legal hali's! Thanks for the report.
