My guess is that they would die almost instantly in saltwater

When I've fed them to a SW tank before, they live for maybe 3-4min. Stick a hook in them and cut that time in half.

If you're talking about the crakers I've caught mackeral on them. But it was a WFO bite so you coulda taken a crap in the water and moved your bare hook twords it and had one on. If you're talking about regular goldfish my question would be why not just catch some smelt of equal size. Would work better.

Why not just dye your sardines?

The LMB bass guys in the midwest do it to shad....why not sardines?

I tried it once off a pier. They didnt last long and didnt yield any strikes. I would say, follow the old saying when it comes to bait: "match the hatch". In other words, since saltwater fish have never seen a goldfish before, they are not likely to take it when presented as bait.

You will be much better off using standard saltwater baits such as squid, grunion, mussell, sandcrabs, etc.

Good luck!

Since goldfish don't last too long in the salt. Just fly line a Garibaldi?

thank you for your responses.

Yeah, cyprinids are famous for salt intolerance.

I'll just stick to lures..

I still think a big stupid mean bay bass would smash the hell out of a goldie though..

Bettas are actually known to thrive in salty water.

Actually ... Macks are great bait for cats and pike so im pretty sure
if you dead baited a goldfish you'd catch something in the salt
