Traps are legal for crawdads, but there is a size limitation. I think 2 feet. Double check.

I believe crawdads are an invasive species and a pest as far as DFG is concerned. I cant imagine they would give a rats ***** if you caught every damn one of them.

The Kern River is loaded with them. Two times I went out there and brought my 2 crawdad traps with me. A park ranger snuck up on us and saw all my traps and a big pot of crawdads we were boiling and he didn't say anything about it not being allowed, so I'm pretty sure it's legal.

At the Kern find shallow rocky areas and get a snorkeling mask and you can grab tons of them if you're quick enough. If you use a trap you won't catch as many, but you'll still get some.

I've also heard Big Bear has nice ones.

Btw this thread should be in the Freshwater forum.

Oh and another option... sometimes 99 Ranch markets have live crawdads.
