Just wanted to see if anyone remembers how young they were when they were first introduced to fishing. My dad started me off when I was 2 years old, I have the proof, I am now 36 and still loving it!!!! My dad made me into the Slayer I am today!! Keep our sport alive, teach a young one to fish!!

My grandfather taught me when I was about 8 or 9yo. Man I wish I remembered all his striper honey holes up in Norcal.

I remember my first fish...I was 2 y.o. and know it because my sister was just born and it was my b'day weekend. Dad was camping in bishop creek and I clearly remember my first trout in a little pool just below the campsite. Been fishing ever since and most of you know how realllllly old I am......BTW that was 57 years ago. My sister has some old pics somewhere, but she won't share them with me. Pray I never become that mean in my lifetime. Funny the things you remember. Obviously that particulary interested me. Take care of the young ones and they will fish forever, I know I plan to........OFG

My first fish was when I was 3 years old. I totally remember it too. I was at Lake Henshaw fishing on the dock. It was late afternoon and I caught a crappie on a red/white mini jig. Man that was some fun times. Now I got my 2 year old going out with me when I fish the neighborhood lake. Hopefully soon he will get into it instead of slapping his pole into the water.

Wow, what awesome memories for you guys! I started fishing 3 years ago - some guy friends of mine were talking about going to the 'Vine and when I said that sounded like fun, they "dared" me to go out with them thinking I wouldn't be able to hack it.
The rest, as they say, is history.

I love to see the little kids out there with their parents, especially the little girls like LilTD and Celeste!

I started fishing & hunting around 13 when I came to the states. Dad was always busy on business w/ no interest in anything else. My older friends got me hooked on ethical enjoyment of outdoor sports.

Currently 42 & still fishing. have started both my 12 & 8 year old kids @ 3-4 years of age. They both love to fish & would throw a fit if I did not take them fishing with me.

As a bonus, my wife also loves to fish since she used to fish while she was a kid.

Cheers!

my mother was fishing when i was still incubating in her tummy. my earliest memories are around 2 and 3 years old fishing ramer and weist lake. at the age of 7 and 8 me and my late friend kris were riding our bikes all over the imperial valley scouting out the next place to fish, man life was so good then.

Took a trip to the East Coast to visit my dad's family when I was 12. We were in a town in Maine, and I saw some stripers while walking over the bridge to get to the beach. I told my dad that I wanted to catch one, and we spent the next two weeks trying to do so. He'd never been fishing before, so we completely relied on the kindness of other fishermen and they really helped us out.

We didn't catch anything, but I became completely obsessed with fishing. It's been 6yrs I still have no clue what's going on half the time. It went pier fishing, harbor fishing, pay lake trout fishing, cattle boats, surf fishing, and then swimbaiting. Still do all of them, but the surf and swimbaits are my main ones.

I've been lucky to live within a bike ride of the beach, and that I've got friends who like fishing. Some of the best times are chilling on the beach in the summer, surfing for a bit, then busting out the corbina gear and catching a few for fresh BBQ'd fish tacos. Awesome summer day... especially when you throw in a good party after all that.

Excellent post first of all!
My earliest memory was when I was 6, when my Uncle Fred came back from Vietnam. He took my sister, my uncle ( who is just 4 years older than me ) my aunt ( 2 years older ) and myself up to Angeles National Park to a trout farm.
On the way up we stopped at some place for some apple cider and it was the best! When we got to the farm I remember catching a whole bunch of trout and when getting ready to leave it was gonna be quite a bit of money so my uncle said to put some of the fish back in the water...LOL
I will never forget that day as long as I live and everytime I see my Uncle I tell him I love him very much. Even after he whoops me in golf.....:Big Grin:

Dad started taking me to Legg Lake when I was about 7 (34 now). Continued in the Boy Scouts with my buddy Mark "FishWhisperer". His dad would take us saltwater fishing in Long Beach or on their boat. My dad would take us Freshwater fishing (Legg lake, Silverwood, Puddingstone, Sante Fe dam and Lake Gregory. I never got my older kids into fishing which I regret, was always working when they were small. But I have been getting my 2 year old daughter on the water since she was 3 months old. She loves fishing.

Great thread and great pics...

Here's a couple of my pics, don't laugh too hard. Yes, my momma dressed me funny, but to her defense, it was after all the 1970s!

Here's one 30 some years ago, in the Pyrenees mountains along the border of France and Spain:

This one is obviously a few years later, and is of my Dad and I at one of our favorite lakes that you hike in from the French side to Andorra. My uncle is the one taking the pics. The last time I visited this lake was in 2007, and now you can actually drive to within a 1/4 mile of it....

Whats crazy is my Dad still occasionally spinfishes that same rod after all these years! LOL!! (the old school Zebco's when Zebco used to make half way decent rods).

Thats cool he still uses them, I'am 60 and still use some of my first rods and reels sometimes, they are just a part of me I guess.

My first time fishing was when I was 5 out on my uncles boat, first fish I ever caught was about an 7lb Calico bass. I remember saying "It's stuck" and my uncle came over to see if he could get it out of the rocks or kelp or w/e I snagged, then I hear "holy ****, it's a fish" lol. It was too big for me to reel in by myself when I was 5.

Good times.

Man…I started about 7-8 years old…not sure exactly…cannot remember that far back but I was only “Knee high !”

I wish I could find more photos but we didn’t take photos all the time but I’ve enjoyed “getting my slay on !” for more years than I’d prefer to mention..

Get those kids fishing everyone…it’s one of the best experiences in life and it’s one of the most healthy and honest pastimes out there (except for the fish stories) –ha ha ha

Here’s a couple pics, the Kitty, I believe I was 14-15 but the LMB I was much much younger..

Great thread! Memory lane! Cool stuff to think about.

I don't have pics but I was 2 when my mom and dad took me fishing for bluegills and redears at the local high school. We caught buckets full.

I was 7 when my grandfather gave me a casting pole and challenged me to learn to cast accurately. He had had a heart attack. I would sit up in his room. He would get all of his fishing gear out and describe to me how, where and when to use it. I only remember fishing with him once but I can remember catching lots of fish using techniques he taught me.

As far as casting goes he asked me to go out in my backyard and learn to cast from 30 ft into a hula hoop first, and then into a lawn darts ring (18" circle), Then a coffee can. When I told him I could cast into the coffee can, he got out of bed and came down to his back yard and had me show him. When he saw that I could he said, OK now learn to cast into a coffee cup. I had to fill the coffee cup half way with sand to keep the casting weight from bouncing out. When I showed him that I could hit the coffee cup, he laughed and said that he had been kidding about the coffee cup. None the less, it served me well!
