I'm thinking about buying a shimano cardiff 400. I saw this guy using it to cast irons on the pier and he managed to catch a few bonitas . I'm used to fishing with a penn international 965 and 975. Would this be a good reel for 3/4 day boats. I also plan on using it at some of the jetties in the san diego areas. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Oh, it' kinda of a budget thing. 259 for penn, 119 for cardiff.

i would fish a shimano over a penn just out of prefrence. The cardiff is a great reel for the price. if your looking for a rod than let me know. i have a seeker inshore that has some wear and tear but would be a perfect match up.

good luck,
Sam

Good reel with superb value. Go for it. Absolutely perfect, versatile 3/4 day reel. Spool with 40 or 50lb braid and short mono topshots.
