F/V Reel Obsession: Limits!

As I type this, BigRed and his brother Paddy are driving back to L.A., all hopped up on energy drinks as they face another "X" amount of time figuring out how their gonna fillet limits of fish. LOL!

We met at Shelter at 3 a.m., and were underway for a scoop at EB. Cleared the bay, and set course for the 230 spot. Game plan was to make our way there and see what gives, and then if need be, search elsewhere.

It was flat flat flat calm, which made for quick sailing. Got to the 230 area and noticed the water had dramatically cooled from last week. No bueno. We set up our nice spread anyway, and trolled while looking for paddies and signs of life. Eventually we just picked up the trollers and speadily looked for warmer water.

After a while, we change our game plan and decide to work further south and westward. Lo and behold, before we know it, we're practically at the East Butterfly! :Shocked: (ie. nearly 2X the distance we originally planned).

BigRed finds us the first paddy of the day, however, she wasn't holding. After more searching and trolling in 68 degree water, we eventually find a really sexy one.

Within minutes, Paddy and BigRed put on a fishing clinic, by catching 2 YFT and 2 YT. Paddy was using a silver megabait, and BigRed bait. By this time, the only thing I managed to do was farm 2 bites. LOL!

The paddy stops producing, so we move on. We troll around and I pick up a YFT on rapala that we ran below a spreader.

Sometime in the afternoon we are feeling a little desperate, so we go back to our mega paddy, and find there are a couple other boats working it. No sweat, as we get the invite to work it.

It was no love for a while until the 2 boats bail out. We setup what we thought would be a LAST drift.....and that's when pandemonium breaks loose. BigRed hooks in to a dorado (which spools his itty bitty reel), and from that point onward, it was a steady and predictable pick at fish. We had multiple triple hookups, as well as multiple farmed fish. In the midst of the craziness I subjected BigRed to my exquisite dorado gaffing technique ("dink" goes the line!), while Paddy demonstrated "catch, gaff, and release!" (dorado slips out of hands back in to water).

Really great fishing was had, and we all agreed to one heck of a way to close out the season. (yeah, I know, last saturday with Webmaster Jeff was supposed to be my season closer! LOL!).

What a great tuna season it has been. Thanks Paddy and BigRed for the gracious invitation. Definately lots of joking and farming of fish when we get together. Farmacist, we missed you on this trip!

What a great time we had Rich, all the farmed fish and lots of laughs. Thats what fishing is all about. Can't wait till next tuna season, now lets Kill Bugs!!

That was a fun trip Rich and Pat we left the tuna season with a bang thanks. I say Rich you need to practice with your gaff skills all i felt was the gaff hitting the line every time lol and Pat needs to stop fishing for birds half the time lol. Good fishing,,
