Jackpot Jimmy

With the wide open bonito fishing that the Tradition got into on Friday, I was hoping for a repeat. Dad and I got down to the landing early, and we soon shoved off with 16 anglers. Headed over to the bait receiver and loaded up on small sardines, which is perfect bait for the bonito. In addition to that, we already had some nice little Spanish jacks. Then, we headed off for Catalina. Our crew consisted of Captain Steven Konrady, Derrick in the galley, and Morgon and John on deck. Also helping out were John, Greg, and Nick. Stevo made his safety speech, and also said that the bonito were stupid wide open yesterday, and just about anything you threw at them got bit. After eating breakfast and rigging up my stuff, we soon arrived at the island.
We started a chum line, and we saw some nice bonito and even a few yellows pop up. We managed to get a few boneheads at this spot, but it didn’t transpire due to all the Fidos hanging around. We set the trolling rods out, and continued down the island. We soon had a triple jig strike, and it was game on. I was tossing out a megabait, and got two nice bonito right in a row. Others were hooked up, and they also threw on some nice Killer Bones. The bite soon petered out, and we set out the trolling rods again, and continued down the line. We got a jig strike for a little bonito soon after.
Then, we tried a few spots along the kelp, where we pulled up some nice calicos. Bass fishing was all right; those flylining got the calicos, while those fishing the bottom were rewarded with some nice sheephead and more calicos. Some sheephead were even caught while flylining. We soon headed back up the line, and we got another triple jig strike on the Killer Bones. We got a few before the bite petered out. We then tried another kelp spot, and it was the best bass fishing of the day. I was using the little Spanish jacks, and I would cast it into a pocket of kelp, and all it had to do was twitch to get bit. The best part was that almost every bass I got on the Spanish was legal. We soon headed for home, with around 60 bonito, 60 bass, and a few sheephead. Jackpot went to Tradition regular Bill Mozingo with a nice big bonito, which is his second jackpot in a row. Great times, great fishing!
