I want to get my dad a good to real good spinning reel but can't spend the 700-1000 price ranges for the top dollar ones... and what is the preferred line and pound you would put on it??? He likes going on 3/4 trips to Catalina, San Climente and Coronado Islands... thanks guys

At least get him a levelwind reel....not a spincast reel. Do they even make spincast reels dedicated for ocean fishing????????

Just a thought.

When you say "spincast" your referring to this type of reel right??

If that's the case I don't think they make a spincast for the salt. Just not enough drage stopping power for some of the bigger fish at Cat and San Clemente.

Fishing 3/4, Cat, overnight, SCI, if he's starting out I would suggest 25# mono as a good starting point. That should cover him for just about anything big or small that would big at those areas. I would suggest a conventional reel something like a Penn 535 wouldn't be too expensive. Runs about $140 brand new.

By his prices, I would think he means $700 - $1000 for a Stella or Saltiga spinning reel???

Try a "Baitrunner or Thunnus" by Shimano if your looking for a nice spinning reel

If your looking for something in the $200 range you should check these three out. All of these are big fish able reels. Hold good amounts of line and have good drags for a good price and they look pretty nice. Ive owned a cabo and it was pretty nice.

he has a daiwa sealine conventional reel but is uncomfortable using it... he needs more practice but always goes back to his spinning reel. I have a friend with a shimano stella w/ 80# momoi line but thats way out of my budget... so I was wondering what other spinning reels there are without resorting to your wal-mart/big 5 specials. I want to keep it around 400 with the pole. Thanks guys for the feedback

Check out the Daiwa Saltist Spinner's they just came out and looks like they should be able to handle stuff from the local islands without any problems. Depending on the size of the reel they are around 200 bucks. http://www.charkbait.com/cs/csrd.htm#Spinning%20Reels

Oh and these are referred to as spinning reels NOT spincast. Spincast is a completely different type of reel.

Most of the guys on the east coast are using the Shimano Spheros 14000 or a Penn 9500. You can check them both out at the Long Fin in Orange. Both of them run under 200, and you might be able to find some better deals online.

Some of the previous suggestions are good: Shimano Thunnus, Shimano Baitrunner OR the PENN SS series like a 7500 or 8500. The Daiwa BG-60 and 90 are good too but I like the shimano and PENN more because their roller line guide is excellent in minimizing line abrasion.

Thunnus runs about $150 new, baitrunner can be had for under $100 and same with the PENN if bought used

Not sure if you guys know this but if your gonna get the Baitrunner from Shimano they just released an updated version called the Baitrunner D. Basically they upgraded the reel with alot of their newer technology so it looks like it's a much better reel. Not sure how much the new ones cost but something definitely worth looking at. http://fish.shimano.com/publish/content/global_fish/en/us/index/products/reels/saltwater_spinning/Biatrunner.html

Nice to see some new styling on that reel. The old style made it look like a cheapo reel.

Gavin, the baitrunner's design is about 15 years old. But for the new series of baitrunner's looks to be about double the cost of the original baitrunner's but looking at the spec's could be well worth it.
