What a rarity, my guess is that it drifted some time dead and ended up near the pier. I remember back in the 80s when you could ACTUALLY SEE 40 lb yellowtail cruising in packs in King Harbor in Redondo, even by the little pier in about 20 ft of water. They wouldnt hit anything but MAN it was fun to see.

That's a really nice size one too!

It wasn't so long ago that maybe a couple days out of the year you would hear off people catching firecrackers like that off of Ocean Beach Pier. In years past, I've personally seen people catch firecrackers off MB jetty using surfpoles, a float and live smelt. I've never been so lucky.

The last mini el-nino we had in 1997 we were catching firecrackers just outside newport harbor LITERALLY about 100 yds off the beach sand. Some buddies and I were lucky enough to catch about 10 each on swimbaits and iron from our jetskis. It was awesome

Thats a monster yellow darn sea dogs they couldnt even eat the yellowtail because it was too big so they ate the belly and guts. Thats a great fish I like the others that posted above have also heard of the schools of home gard yellows that used to prowl king harbor. The days when they used to pump the warm water into the harbor. But this is the first I ever seen landed on the pier.

i remember 83 el nino. fishing the bubble hole in kings harbor. we caught some nice yellow tail that day. A funny thing that happened when i was fishing that day, i had some bait out and i was reaching in the cooler for a beer and had my rod clutched to my chest, i guess the boat had turned 180 degrees, and wham i got hit and that fish pulled me right over the bench seat onto my back.

from what ive heard, redondo pier was always the best chance for a landlocked angler to catch some yellowtails..
