we left around 11:00.
Kevin and Niel went on there way ,and i decided to try the half day trip at RSF. I know this is the wrong section for this report ,but figured ,nothing special and i can kill two birds with one stone!!LOL!
This wasn't no LBSF or PIERPOINT but was a good little outing to gather my thoughts...
pretty much the captain parked it at one spot and sat there the whole time:Angry:.
saw a nice black sea bass being pulled up and safetly released. also saw a couple nice spotties come up but other than that ,it was a mac fest!!
some body won the jackpot with a hali barely making it at 22 and a half inches !!
here's a pic of the outing and my bag of goodies!!

Wow looks like you had a productive weekend of fishing. I've been curious about fishing alamitos bay for some spotties or sandies. Some of docks there look pretty fishy.

alamitos bay can be good some days. my best day was 6 sandies and a short hali in an hour.. in the harbor side.

Did you keep any of the Sargos you caught? whats min. size to keep that fish btw?
i haven't kept any inshore fish yet, mainly released them.
i believe they fall under general fin fish. no size limit. 10 fish max of the same species.

like fflb said the ones in the sack are macs..

This is from Wikipedia:
(Pacific bonito, Sarda chiliensis lineolata, is a marine species of bonito that is a game fighter but which is not highly thought of as a food fish.

It is colored blue to violet above, with metallic luster becoming silvery ventrally. It has ten or eleven stripes on its back running obliquely from the dorsum forward, and fifteen or more rakers below the angle on the first gill. The first dorsal fin is contiguous with the second and longer than the head. The caudal peduncle is slender, and the body entirely scaled. It has no teeth on the vomer. It has a small keel on either side of the median keel on the sides of the caudal peduncle, and six to eight finlets on the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the caudal peduncle. The maximum length is about 40 in and weight 25 pounds. It is found anywhere from inshore to about 100 miles offshore from northern Vancouver Island to Chile , though it is not normally found north of Point Conception. It usually travels in schools. Fish and squid are its main diet. It is caught by trolling and still fishing, using feather lures, spoons, or live bait.)))))

If it is a Bonito then why does it not look like the bigger one that you put up as back up. I have caught small Bonito before and the look just the bigger ones but that one in your pic is missing the stripe done the side of it.

If you look in this pic there is a small bonito in the pic as well as some big one. The small bonito look just like the big one in this pic. So i do not know why you all think that the one fish in the pic is a bonito it does not look like the small one in this pic or any of the big ones.

It's a bonito/bonita/bonehead.

It doesn't have the horizontal stripes yet because it is a very young juvenile. If you look at the other defining features such as the dark mouth filled with large, needle like teeth and the heavy vertical stripes that extend past the lateral line then it becomes clear that the fish is a bonito. Mackerel have a no large needle like teeth, or heavy vertical stripes past the lateral line.

Yes its a bonito...LOL...

like BSP said, It hasnt developed the horizontal lines yet but the vertical lines are there. Mackerel dont have the Vertical lines, or the sharp teeth... Its ok to be wrong sometimes. :)

just a bit of information that may useful to some. that bass i caught on the half day, when the deckie gutted and cleaned it, it stomach was full of fish heads that were thrown out, from people on the boat cutting up sardines for bait!! i was surprised to find that in there. goes to show what they can eat....

I'm 100% that's a bonito.. the only thing i can say about your argument,is that the vertical strips shown on both of the fish can be revealed when the fish is stressed.. just like certain aquarium fish!! but the horizontal lines are there if you look closely, just not fully developed..
i think we can officially close this case!!!:Smash::ROFL:
