Rod and reel combo for surf?

Looking to get a new rod and reel combo for surf, under 100 bucks. I'm going to Bass Pro to look around, any suggestions on gear?

Depends on what you plan on targeting. Perch? Corbina? Halibut? Sharks and rays??

Sports authority has a shimano spinner rod/reel combo on clearance price with a 25% off the tag. Basically it comes out to $45 bucks. Can't beat that price anywhere. 7ft rod, forget what specs or name. Reel is a sedona 2500.

I have a Shimano AX4000FB reel and Shimano Sojorn 7'0" rod spooled with 6 lb fluorocarbon line. I'm thinking about stepping it up to 8 or 10 lb test for halibut. It seems to get the job done, right now.

Do you want spinning or baitcasting?

Generally you are looking at 2500 size spinning reels and 200 size baitcasters for light tackle surf fishing. 7'-8' rods (usually 1/4oz-5/8oz for spinning, and 1/4oz to 1oz for baitcasters), 8lb to 12lb mainline, and you can drop down to 6lb leaders for perch.

Used to be the Better/stronger Drags on Baitcasters....
Now the Spinning reels have caught up mostly?? better drags....

Line capacity is also an issue on some...

Then there is the personal preference.......

Use what suites you and your comfortable with.. Until ya get to 20 lb + fish, then ya truly need a baitcaster (round) for Line capacity, drags & control...
