My Friend Harv and I decided it was our last chance to get the YFT. It would be his first ever tuna trip! I called in Wed. and secured 2 spots aboard the 95’ First String outta H & M. We awoke Sunday morning 90 miles south of S.D. and went in search of patties. We came across the first one and it was crazy!
Half the boat got bit and guys were doing the tuna shuffle over & under all over the place! I hooked a YFT and lost it due to tangles. A limited load of 35 doesn’t seem very limited when it’s wide open! I hooked another and lost it under the boat after knitting a pretty lil bow with 4 others. Thanks a lot fish….FINALLY, I secured a 15lber and wrestled my way outta the mix at the stern. I got her up port and had my way with her until the gaff ended the fight. Damn I love how these fish pull!

The first stop yielded DORADO, YFT, YT, and ALBACORE! The 4-5 albies were from 20-40lbs with one 40lbr. easily winning JP. You can see one of the smaller albies on the table next to the average sized YFT.

I was using 20 & 30 lbs mono, no flouro, and flylining the dines on a 1/0 hook. Worked for me. I caught a 3x jumper dodo on a pattie and lost a smallish YT to the kelp at another stop.

All told I prolly lost 4-5 YFT and I think 1 dodo.
We had no trouble finding patties all day, but some had no one home while others had only dodos or YT. It was actually quite difficult to keep out of the macramé classes happening at the stern, but everyone managed at least a couple of fish as we were on some decent bites with boils 4-5 times.
I managed 2YFT, 1 small dodo, a micro YT on the troll(Released to grow& fight another day), and a skipjack which I gave away. Now, I just got done making poki out of Harvs smaller skippy that we kept, and I am SO bummed I didn’t keep it! That made some dang good poki!
