Hello everyone! It's been awhile since I've last posted. Ever since school started I've been having fishing withdrawls, so I finally found some time to get out there on Saturday. I wanted try some place other than NPH, so I thought we would try Huntington Harbor for some spottie action.

We started the morning launching near the boat ramps and headed straight for the Simple Green area. I've always seen this place from PCH and wondered what the fishing was like there.

..but before we got to Simple Green we decided to stop by some fishy-looking docks.

First fish of the morning for Tesserz.

While she was working the drop shot, I was working the BH Spottie Special for nada. I switch up to a DS and immediately hook up with a short flattie (not pictured because it was half the size of Tesserz LOL). I cast into the docks again and I feel some solid weight.

I thought maybe I had a nicer grade flattie until I see this guy thrashing around and getting all tangled up in my line.

My first WSB! SWEEEET! :Big Grin:

So after a few more casts we headed over to the Simple Green area while the tide was still up. The sun came out so we switched up to our "sunnytime colors" lures as tesserz calls them.

Good call! She scores with this turd roller. It was our first time seeing a sandie live up to its nickname. This guy twisted himself up in her line.

We continued to work the area and we each caught one short flattie before eventually catching our first Huntington spottie.

Success! LOL

Things were starting to slow down so we got out of there and headed for more docks. Tesserz hooks up again with another flat boy.

By this time it was hot, sunny and not much goin on. For the next three hours we worked the docks and other fishy areas with each of us landing just one more flattie. One of which was the smallest fish of the day caught by Tesserz. And I caught the last fish of the day.

Total Fish Count

Jaysuuun

4 Short Halis
1 WSB
1 Spottie

Tesserz

4 Short Halis
1 Turd Roller

We orginally came to Huntington for spotties, but caught more flatties than anything else instead. There were quite a few yakkers and tubers in the simple green area. On our way back we ran into one of the yakkers who had only caught one bay bass. He was surprised when we told him we had caught quite a few halis. I guess Tesserz's sunnytime colors really paid off.

It wasn't a bad day of fishing for our first time out. We will definitely be back to explore other areas. If anybody has any tips on this harbor, they are very much appreciated.

Later that day...

We were at an asian supermarket buying some korean bbq ribs and something catches my eye.

A tank full of halis! I have never seen live halis in a store before, so I made tesserz take these pics on her camera phone. Not sure if they are the same fish that we love to catch in our local waters. I couldn't help but keep staring at them ( I wanted to throw in my drop shot ). Not sure if they were true halis or some kind of farm-raised flounder, but they definitely looked like halis. They had the same mug and teeth as any other flattie i've seen. We didn't have a tape measure, but they all appeared to be slightly undersize. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks for the report from HH. Used to fish there all the time with my wife in a tandem. With new addition to my family, have to get the aluminum ready to take my daughter out for her first trip. See u out there sometime.

The butts in the tank are imported farm raised from the east side of the pacific. My local Freshia has em too, but twice as expensive...

good job man! havent seen a post from you for awhile. congrats on that WSB!

btw next time try not to hold the wsb, or if possible take them out of the water. iirc theyre a pretty delicate fish. im sure the fish experts (not me ) can chime in on this.

anyways looks like you guys had a great day out on the water. thanks for the report and pics.

Wow you guys had a great day out there in Huntington Harbor. Congrats .

Back in the day not to long ago one could shore fish next to the Simple Green building and down farther under the bridge. They fenced off the whole area on both sides of PCH some time ago. It had to of been done after 911. The Navy has a big base there. LOL. I remember the days driving off PCH ( over the curb ) and down this dirt path and park . We would walk down under the Bridge and fish and throw back beers . It was great back in the day.

In Garden Grove the larger of the Asian Super Markets have live fish tanks with Striper, CATFISH, Halibut and other cool eats that swim. Westminster has the same. kind of cool when you first see it .

Thanks for the report.

Thanks, we didn't have an epic day, but we did beat the skunk. It's something I always worry about everytime I fish a new spot.

I know that most live fish in asian markets are imported and farm raised, but I had never seen hali's before. It was kinda cool to catch halis and see them alive in a supermarket in the same day. Too bad the flatties we caught weren't as big as the ones in the tank.

Thanks man, we're glad to be back. With FNN just a mouse-click away, we were able to research the area before heading out. :Thumbs Up:

 Your "little secret"? . That's too funny. As I stated earlier the fish in the tank were slightly undersize. They were definitely not....

WAY PAST LEGAL!

Trust me, I wanted to get out there so many times but never had a chance. Just too many things going on. I'll be sure to make it out to NPH sometime to see what's goin on with those spotties.

Thanks, I'll be sure to be a little more careful when unhooking the wsb. I didn't know they were so sensitive.

We plan to go back and explore the area little more. We still love NPH, but we like that Huntington is closer, and less crowded.

Thanks for the report.

We tried fishing near the rocky base of the bridge, but no luck. I didn't really want to fish underneath the bridge and impede boating traffic. We did see a couple of guys casting out the swimmy underneath, but no luck for them.

I was at another asian market and saw some lingcod, another species I have not seen at a market regularly. I thought that was pretty cool.
