It had been quite awhile since I hit the salt and I was thinking the chance to chase some exotics was going to slip through my fingers this summer...until I got an unexpected invite from Webmaster Jeff to fish with him on his boat! So after ironing out a few kinks we finally set a date we both could fish and the wheels were set in motion :Big Grin:
Jeff and his adorable daughter Keilani picked me up just after 2am and off we headed towards Shelter Island to launch for the day. We had a slight delay while getting gas at 7/11, but we finally got on the way and we were off and running before we knew it.
"We not at the Vine anymore Toto"

Capt Jeff decided we would stick to the 9 mile bank and 302 area as the weather was forecast for bumpy seas and the trip back to Point Loma coulda gotten ugly, but as it turned out it was pretty nice out there!

The trolling gear was set out and we worked the 302 to start out...

First Mate Keilani on the watch for signs of life and elusive kelp paddys!

It was not too long into our journey when the Webmaster's trolling rod started to sing that song we all love to hear from an agitated clicker! After a brief battle the skunk was punked by a decent sized dodo....

From there we pushed forward and trolled along the 302 to no avail, but certainly not for a lack of effort. Jeff continued to scan the water, never taking a break, monitoring the radio for info and did everything any great skipper could do to put more fish in the boat....you are hardcore dude!

With reports from "The Nine" reporting tough fishing we headed towards to Coronados where we did find crashing tuna, but they were not willing to play and quickly sunk out as we approached

We made our way inside and ran into a school of dolphin, saw a whale in the distance, crashing birds, breaking fish and all the right signs, but the fish were just not eating...with the exception of a bonita that bit on the troll. It would have been all we wanted on the bonies, but we were looking for a better grade of tuna or perhaps a yellotail or two....the sealions put the kabosh on that idea when we drifted in the middle grounds and scarfed up our dines as soon as they hit the water. Oh well, back to the troll in search of our elusive quarry.
After a few more hours we decided it was just not meant to be, as many others fishing the area found out as well. The Capt had me guide us on in as he filleted the dorado....

The ride back in was a smooth one and I had a blast driving the boat in, there is something about the end of the day after fishing on the ocean...it is like nothing else regardless of your catch.
The haul for the day...Jeff's dorado and 2QuickMotorwerk's Irvine Catmasters bait

Upon retunring to the ramp there was quite a bit of activity

This dude was going to get his share of handouts regardless of the pelican's opinions!

Before leaving a DFG rep came by to ask about the day's catch....nice lady.

The drive home went by rather quickly, but I'm sure that had more to do with passing out on the way home(sorry about that Jeff! :Embarrassed:) the Webmaster was kind enough to share some of his dorado and hooked me up with a FAT fillet that made for an incredible meal while watching Sunday night football (darn Bears!)
Dorado with fresh garlic, pasta, green beans and garlic bread! :Big Grin:

Jeff I cannot say thank you enough for having me aboard your boat, I had a FANTASTIC time fishing with you and your daughter...I hope to do it again with you someday in the near future!
Thanks for reading, see you on the water!
