???? yes....bleed them out...just like the tuna..whether you gaff them or not...gaffing has nothing to do with it homie

Unless your keeping it for shark, catfish, or lobster bait then it don't matter. Otherwise bleed it.

Them purple-fish sure are tasty if you bleed & ice ASAP. Fine tasting sashimi or Poke salad for sure.....but merely "ok" cooked (just my personal taste). If you don't keep them cold, you might as well use it for lobster/cat bait.

While alive: Rip one or 2 gills max, or make a vertical cut past the pectorals on both sides (like they do for big big tuna), or some even cut the throat...either way, it needs to be alive so it can pump itself out.

Just learned from Jeff (El Webmaster) that if you soak the fillets a little in your bait-tank (obviously flush the bait first, and keep bait tank on) the seawater will leach out the blood. It worked and our tuna tasted great!

Thanks for the replies guys. I wasn't sure if had to do with the blood leaking back into the fish from the gaff.
