Supposed to be going up to Carpenteria this weekend and wanted to do some surf fishing. What kind of gear would be good for a beginner to use.

Depends on what you're looking to target.

Here's a little info......

I'm gunna say, WITHOUT expertise, a 7'0"-ish medium spinning combo with nice mono and a flouro leader ... c-rigging camo-colored worms and drop-shotting some berkley jerk shads or zoom flukes http://www.floridabassfishing.us/images/0309081539b.jpg

I bought a Shimano AX4000FB reel and Shimano Sojorn 7'0" rod this week, but haven't been able to test it out yet. I'm going to be fishing in Carpinteria in a couple weeks! You should probably go with something like I got, but maybe a smaller reel. The reel I got holds too much line, but that is not a problem. I couldn't find one that held enough line besides a 4000 series.

6# flouro line

medium action bass rod 6 to 7 ft

i use a spinning reel

1/2oz egg sinker carolina rigged

and last but not least get some Berkely gulp 2" camo sandworms and some small drop shot hooks 6 or 4's

that will saly any perch and YFC you might encounter in the surf.

zoom flukes work good too but i have not used them.

for some flattie action go with metallic sardine lucky craft jerk baits.

or when all else fails dig up some sand crabs *bigger the better* and shoot them out for the bigger perch.

for bigger game use a 20# flouro 6 to 8oz lead and toss out whole squid or cut chovie sardine or mac.
