View Full Version : Anferny7, Wingnut, and BSP hit the Southern Surf!

It had been a while since I had hit the surf due to a super infection (yes there is such a thing) that caused me to lose 7lbs, and the fact that my dad has seriously screwed up his arm. In light of this, I had to make a surf trip this weekend knowing that my fishing was going to be drastically limited now that I am senior in high school with 5 AP classes (to the younger guys: take as many APs as you can handle while maintaining your sanity. They actually matter).

All that being said, I told Wingnut that this weekend was when I could hit the surf, and asked if he wanted to plan a trip together. He said he was free, and we began planning the surf mission. The original plan was for Anferny7 (Anthony), Bones (Mike), Wingnut (Arthur), and I to hit up some Southern spots and hopefully score a few legals.

Gear Used:
Me-Phenix X-10 with Luna 203
Wingnut: Carrot Stix Gold with Pluton
Anferny7-Shimano Clarus and Shimano Sedona 2500

(Guys, please correct me if I am wrong on this one/fill in specific models.)

Poseidon seemed to have different ideas for us however. The initial problem arose when he took Bones out of commission on Sunday via a leg injury. Get well soon man, we missed you out there!

Then... Anthony ran into some problems.

Anthony (Anferny7) is Arthur's buddy.
A millionaire surfer Playboy! :Envious:

Anthony's (Anferny7) day didn't start out too well.

Despite these initial problems, conditions turned out to be pretty good. Flat, sunny, baitfish everywhere in the waves and boiling, minimal salad, but a distinct lack of legal flatties. Still, we managed to scrounge up a pretty decent shorty count for the day.

Wingnut: 6 shorts from pancake size to 20in, one YFC, and a Calico.
Me: 6 shorts from 10in up to about 20in.
Anferny7: 4 shorts from pancake size to a fat 21in (big flatty of the day!).

I bet you guys are thinking "GET ON WITH THE PIX" by now, so I'll let them do the talking with a minimum amount of commentary by me... I promise.

Arthur's Calico.

There's a funny story behind this calico. Anthony had been trying for one all day by casting right next to the kelp we found, and hadn't managed stick one. Wingnut then stood right next to him, made a cast right where he had been casting, and stuck this fat little calico. Needless to say, Anthony was a little annoyed. He made up for it by taking the Big Fish of the Day! Not with the next fish, but with a later one.

Now for my fish. I managed to get a fish on the first and and last casts of the day. The last fish tied up my fish count with Wingnut's, but he had the two miscellaneous fish for the Most Fish Caught for the day. DANG IT! Next time Wingnut, NEXT TIME!

Cool Bucket Brigade Dude (licensed and everything!). This guy was really nice. He was aware of the regulations, and hooked a very large fish that snapped him off in the kelp. If only all bucket brigaders were like him.

Finally, a last shot of the millionaire Playboy!

Poacher Alert: There were several poachers in the general area where we were fishing. So, what's the law abiding surf fisherman to do? Make a 45min detour to the lifeguard station while Anferny7 and Wingnut go check out another area and catch 5 shorts? YES! It kinda sucked but was worth it because the poachers got kicked out.

FYI, I told Anthony and Arthur to go. They are great guys, and offered to wait for me.

Concluding thoughts:

Man, Monday was just awesome. Aside from a personal problem that developed as we were leaving, this was as close to a perfect end to summer I could have hoped for.

Anthony and Arthur fixed their flat after some difficulty, and we all agreed that we had to do another trip soon. Some legals would have been nice, but you can't really complain when 3 guys pull 16 halibut out of the surf.

Thanks for reading!

Marc, always a pleasure fishing with you & your Dad. Maybe soon, your Dad will actually be in the surf with us pulling in Flatties.
The day didn't start out so well with the flat and we missed the grey light bite, but we did pretty well on the fish count. Conditions was great... too bad the legal models didn't want to come out and play.
It was fun having the fish count competition between the three of us... I can't believe you nabbed that last Hali on the final cast... I thought that I had it all wrapped up. Don't you love fishing the surf with Anthony? He attracts all kinds of exotic wildlife.  :Envious:

BTW - Great job on taking the initiative to report the unlicensed fishermen to the lifeguards. We saw them throw a fish in the bucket when we walked up. I asked him what did he catch... the response "I don't know..." We looked in the bucket & saw a small Corbina. Marc & I looked at each other and shook our heads... if it was a small Calico, it would have met the same fate.

Anyways, I'm glad that you are completely well and back in action.

Thanks Klocked, I needed this to help with getting through the first week of school. As for were we were, there are several Secret Spots. Where are they and which we are fishing on any given day... well I'm not about to tell. :Secret:

Bigred, that lobster molt was pretty cool to see, and we even saw the nice bucket brigade guy accidentally hook one. I might have to visit that spot during lobster season.

Blackwater, I came close, but that still isn't a win. I'll beat Kingnut next time. The amount of shorts was unreal though. You would think that there would be at least one legal mixed in.

Capt'n, thanks!

Badbeat: We were worried at the beginning that we wouldn't get any numbers. Fortunately the action picked up, and we ended up with 16 shorts. Not a bad trip at all.

SFE: Yeah, and the good company made it even better!

TO: That is definitely true. Sometimes people get so caught up in one goal that they miss out on what they already have accomplished.

TJ: Sadly I am not. School decided to be a pain and now there is a very good chance I can't make it. Best of luck to you, I know you have the strategy and kill to pull off the win!
Anthony was bummed about the tire, but catching some halibut generally puts a smile on your face.

Fishep: Yeah,it was a good catching day, but I would trade all my shorts for one legal like you got!

sansou: That's what I am hoping!

Wingnut: Likewise. My dad doesn't mind being the support staff, but he does want to pull on another legal before the year is over. Thanks for spending some time with him too. He appreciates it.

We need to have the contest each time we go fishing. I think it helped motivate us to really fish hard, and as a result produce a decent fish count. As for that last cast flattie, I have some of my own luck too.

Anthony was a guy great to fish with, and the wildlife was a nice addition to the scenery! I can't wait to hit the spots you guys were talking about too. Hopefully we can plan that soon.

Yeah, the fact that they kept a fish even though they didn't know what it was really ticked me off. It was worth the walk to get them off the beach.

Hope to hit the surf with you again soon Arthur!

BSP and Wingnut: Great time fishing with the both of you, wish I had my Dad to caddy for me and carry my gear around! But seriously, I hope your Dad gets better soon.

Flat tire was a serious bummer, especially since I was not prepared to handle the situation with the Honda Accord tire jack that came with the truck, incorrect lug wrench(after market rims and tires), and far distance away from any shop that could help. Thx for coming to the rescue Wingnut, you save the day with getting me on the fish and helping me fix my flat!

I owe you Katsuya sometime in the very near future!!

And thx BSP for hosting your secret spot, excellent situation down there. Get well soon yourself, looking forward to hitting a legal there someday.

As for the wildlife, always keep that head on a swivel...
