It had been a while since I had hit the surf due to a super infection (yes there is such a thing) that caused me to lose 7lbs, and the fact that my dad has seriously screwed up his arm. In light of this, I had to make a surf trip this weekend knowing that my fishing was going to be drastically limited now that I am senior in high school with 5 AP classes (to the younger guys: take as many APs as you can handle while maintaining your sanity. They actually matter).
All that being said, I told Wingnut that this weekend was when I could hit the surf, and asked if he wanted to plan a trip together. He said he was free, and we began planning the surf mission. The original plan was for Anferny7 (Anthony), Bones (Mike), Wingnut (Arthur), and I to hit up some Southern spots and hopefully score a few legals.
Gear Used:
Me-Phenix X-10 with Luna 203
Wingnut: Carrot Stix Gold with Pluton
Anferny7-Shimano Clarus and Shimano Sedona 2500
(Guys, please correct me if I am wrong on this one/fill in specific models.)
Poseidon seemed to have different ideas for us however. The initial problem arose when he took Bones out of commission on Sunday via a leg injury. Get well soon man, we missed you out there!
Then... Anthony ran into some problems.
Anthony (Anferny7) is Arthur's buddy.
A millionaire surfer Playboy! :Envious:
Anthony's (Anferny7) day didn't start out too well.

Despite these initial problems, conditions turned out to be pretty good. Flat, sunny, baitfish everywhere in the waves and boiling, minimal salad, but a distinct lack of legal flatties. Still, we managed to scrounge up a pretty decent shorty count for the day.
Wingnut: 6 shorts from pancake size to 20in, one YFC, and a Calico.
Me: 6 shorts from 10in up to about 20in.
Anferny7: 4 shorts from pancake size to a fat 21in (big flatty of the day!).
I bet you guys are thinking "GET ON WITH THE PIX" by now, so I'll let them do the talking with a minimum amount of commentary by me... I promise.

There's a funny story behind this calico. Anthony had been trying for one all day by casting right next to the kelp we found, and hadn't managed stick one. Wingnut then stood right next to him, made a cast right where he had been casting, and stuck this fat little calico. Needless to say, Anthony was a little annoyed. He made up for it by taking the Big Fish of the Day! Not with the next fish, but with a later one.

Now for my fish. I managed to get a fish on the first and and last casts of the day. The last fish tied up my fish count with Wingnut's, but he had the two miscellaneous fish for the Most Fish Caught for the day. DANG IT! Next time Wingnut, NEXT TIME!

Cool Bucket Brigade Dude (licensed and everything!). This guy was really nice. He was aware of the regulations, and hooked a very large fish that snapped him off in the kelp. If only all bucket brigaders were like him.

Poacher Alert: There were several poachers in the general area where we were fishing. So, what's the law abiding surf fisherman to do? Make a 45min detour to the lifeguard station while Anferny7 and Wingnut go check out another area and catch 5 shorts? YES! It kinda sucked but was worth it because the poachers got kicked out.
FYI, I told Anthony and Arthur to go. They are great guys, and offered to wait for me.
Concluding thoughts:
Man, Monday was just awesome. Aside from a personal problem that developed as we were leaving, this was as close to a perfect end to summer I could have hoped for.
Anthony and Arthur fixed their flat after some difficulty, and we all agreed that we had to do another trip soon. Some legals would have been nice, but you can't really complain when 3 guys pull 16 halibut out of the surf.
Thanks for reading!
