With the good bass fishing that has been happening at the island in the past week, I was eager to get out and have a shot at it. On Saturday, we rolled off the dock at 6am, and headed over to the bait receiver. We picked up a mix of small and big sardines, and headed for the island. Our crew consisted of Captain Steven Konrady, Derrick in the galley, and Morgon and John on deck. It was a little bumpy going over, but we soon arrived at the island, and set up at our first spot.

First off, there were tons of jumbo saba in the area, and they provided some fun for a few minutes on my Tady AA, but after fooling around, I grabbed my flyline rod, and started heaving the sardines back into the kelp. Those who could cast back towards the rock were getting drilled by the bigger sized bass. The guys were definitely finding the quality. The bite petered out after a while, and Steven headed down the island to find a new spot. The next spot was no different; those heaving the sardines back into the kelp got some nice quality calicos, while others were catching some nice bottom grabbers. At one spot, our good friend Jim caught and released a nice black seabass. Anyways, we finished off the day catching some more quality calicos. Jackpot went to a lucky angler with a nice halibut.

A nice black seabass, safely released UNHARMED.

On Sunday, we picked up our bait fresh off the New Sunbeam, and headed across to the island. We had some nice sardines as well as anchovies. Today, it was still a little bumpy, but not as bad. At the first spot, we started catching some nice bass, and soon after, a huge school of yellows came through. However, they were only cruising by, not feeding. If they were hungry, it would have definitely been game on. Afterward, we conitinued down the island, and found some more bass, but the vast majority of them would attack the bait from the side and kill it, and wouldn't go back for it. We got a lot of bites, but not a whole lot to show for it. Once again, those fishing the bottom were rewarded with some sheephead and whitefish. Also, my dad was fishing plastics all day long, and he was rewarded with a limit of bass and a ton of shorts. We finished out the day at a certain spot where the bass were biting pretty well, probably the best of the day. A lot of quality calicos were pulled out of there. Jackpot went to Tradition regular Chuck with a nice big calico, safely released.

Stevo and Chuck with the jackpot fish, safely released.

I also went on the twilight trip. Our crew consisted of Captain Alan Ferguson, Shawn in the galley, and Austin on deck. We headed up the line where fishing has been pretty good in the last month. We had some really good marks, but the swell might have put them in lockjaw mode. A few guys got some, but for the most part, the bass just weren't eager to bite. Hopefully, the fish will get on the bite again soon.

If you check the DFG reg's the legal minimum length is 12 inches for sheephead, so those anglers are well within their right to keep those.

Thanks for the 2 day report Jimmy... I would rather see people keep the barely legal sheephead and release the big ones... http://fishingnetwork.net/forum4/showthread.php?t=33887

The guys make sure that every fish that look questionable is measured. Those two sheephead were definitely legal.

NICE job man...I am glad to know that some people on your boat do practice catch and release with the larger bass man.....

Back when i was your age Jimmy, actually younger, you could catch 3-6 lb bass all day long on the iron at catalina...not anymore, thats why we all need to practice catch and release and the larger calicos....they grow VERY slow....

Yep, Sunday would've been better had the bass been chewin' like they were on Saturday. See you next weekend, Bill!
