you would be lucky if you find an aluminum boat that floats around $500

Go to the DMV and hope for a nice worker. Bring the CF number of the boat and a physical description of it (12', brand, and approximate year) Tell them how you came to acquire the boat. (HINT) You inherited it within the last 30 days from a deceased family member. They will probably have you fill out a "Statement of Facts." After that you may have to declare a value for the boat ($200-300 should be about right), then they should make you pay $20-40 or so and you will be issued a new registration.

Find a cheap outboard on craigslist (good small motors can be had for as little as $300 if you look hard) and you are set.

Same story, just bring the brand of the boat, the model or serial # (if you can find it), the length of the boat, the approximate year of the boat. Use the same story. Say your (insert relative) never had a motor on the boat but you want to register it in case you get a motor.

Good luck.
