Took a trip to Castaic today with a friend of mine to check out the striper action. I was blown away, we launched around 8:30am on the East side, and were immediately greeted to sites of boils galore, not just a couple but boils everwhere, shad were flying two feet out of the water after being smacked by mr. stripey, it was like a saltwater tuna trip but for stripers instead. Started the trolling with umbrella rigs, never have fished them before, but found out immediatly that they hang up very well in shallow water, lost two for that lesson, so we went with the 1oz white bucktail with a big hammer 3' swimbait in wookie wacker color, looks a bit like a trout on one line and a road runner type bait in pearl on the other rig. One fish caught had a 1/0 hook in its jaw with about two feet of line attached

It was pretty slow for the first hour as we were playing the learning curve of trolling speed and depth of this lake, First hookup was a double, on the bucktail at about 25', after that it was trolling while looking for boils, I just stood on the bow as we trolled and fired away the $1.99 BPS sale bin topwater chugger in bass pattern at the boils as we passed, I got quite a few hits at first, but no hookup, cast blind in a cove, and wham, fish on, dink of course, but fun on the topwater, http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3435/3879401717_046a1347de.jpg
We trolled by TO and had a friendly chat about the action, and mid chat, had to race over to huge boil about 100 yards away, they sunk out, and the 3 boats that hit it, got nothing, we Trolled on down to Kong island and I nailed another one on the topwater

came back east around the point and TO's client is hooked up, rod tip almost touching the water, looks like a 9-12 pounder from where I was boating

He was happy, and it was nice to see some meat coming aboard someones boat. Called it a day about 3:30, all in all it was great day on the water for the second time in my "new" boat. Lots of smoke in the air and a bit of ash falling as well.
