Hi,
I am going camping up at Pismo and I am going to take my 7 year old out for his first time on a half day rock cod. I was curious though, how is the surf fishing up there?
Thanks,
Matt

Lots of big perch in the water up there..... and lots of other species.
Ive had my best luck fishing south of the pier near Oceano.

Drive out onto the beach and head south until you start to see the locals surf fishing...... you'll know you're in the right area when you see them.

Good luck and we'll look forward to your report.

Im sure they will............... I was up there a few weeks back and there was lots of sand crab beds...... you might wanna hook up a soft shell if you can find them and see how that works as well........ or if ya just wanna get the kids on some perch...... Carolina rig a Gulp Camo Sandworm........

Also try north of pismo pier. There is a 1 mile strech of beach that ends with rock caves.
great place for a yak but the surf fishing there is very good also.
Good luck and post how you did..

pismo is great. went last year and caught some nice perch on gulp sandworms - got one walleye as big as a frizbee. we found lots of sandcrabs... but they were the size of tailor hitches. broke 'em up and did okay with them... but really didn't need anything other than the Gulp.

like 57 says, south of oceana.

also might give the pier a shot. they sell sabiki rigs on the pier. kids caught macs and HUGE smelt till their arms gave out. had a blast.

Also, lots of sand dollars in that area.

unless you know for sure your kid won't get seasick maybe you should give him a bonine before the trip. would hate to see his first inshore trip ruined...

halibut are a total yes especially in avila/port san luis. Wingnut/57 give me a pm when you come up this way. company is few and far between around here. and bonine for sure, the waters can be very ruough up here. check the wind reports too, you can get blown off the water pretty quick around here
