Been looking forward to getting back into the surf again... spent last Sunday killing Stripers with T/O and will do it again next Sunday. All week, Mike (Bones) and I were making plans to head North. Last night I get a call from Mike saying that he wasn't feeling well and needed to see a doctor on Sunday. There goes my surf "Wingman". Another S.W.A.T. member out of commission. One due to work, Steve (Flyngby) and the other on temporary medical leave, Mike (Bones). Steve, I'm sure that you were also up North fighting those brush fires. Mike, hang in there and get better soon buddy. You'll be back in the surf in no time.

But the show must go on... my gear are all prepped and ready. The swells looks pretty flat, the tide is favorable and the surf beckons me. The alarm goes off at 4:30am and I'm out the door 20 minutes later... heading North on the 101.

Had my day all planned out. Depending on how the bite is at each location, will determine how long I will stay out there. There would be four stops today with the first at 6:30am and stepping out of the surf at the last spot at 8:00pm, Started far North and working my way South. Another marathon day in my "other" office.

Conditions: Cool & overcast morning with a slight drizzle. Late afternoon sunshine. Mild onshore wind in the afternoon. Swells relatively flat, water clarity fair with a heavy concentration of salad in most areas. Fair amount of baitfish in most of the spots that I hit today.

Techniques: Throwing a variety of Lucky Craft FM110 (stock & custom).
Dropshotting Zoom Flukes & Gulp Minnows.

Side note: I stopped at Stearns Wharf to make a few casts & to eat lunch. I ran into Raymond of Fishing 25 in the parking lot and we had a nice chat. Nice to finally meet you Raymond, thanks for coming over and introducing yourself. I told ya that I was going to get a legal today. Hope you guys did well heading to your secret spot, that's quite a drive. :Secret:

Here are some pics of my solo adventure today... enjoy.

Ready for action.

Love the flat surf condition.

What's up with the extra heavy amount of salad up here this year? Quite a bit more than last year if I can recall correctly. The kelp is easier to fish around but the loose eel-grass is a royal pain to work the LC or dropshot. More often this year up North, I find myself walking to the water, looking at the heavy concentration of salad, and just getting back into the car and head to the next spot.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Wingnut5/Arthur018.jpg

Check this out, has this happened to you? At one of my stops, the vegetation is so thick that after about 1/2 an hour or so of working the LC through all that crap, it stained my Seaguar InvizX and turned it brown.

What a fun and productive day... I was taking my time at each spot and experimenting with a few things. Trying to think "outside" the box.
Spending some quiet time in the surf, gathering my thoughts and reflecting on some of the more important priorities in my life.
Fishing by myself... but not alone.

Fish count (all released)
(11) Halibut - (9) shorts, (2) legals 22", 27"
(2) Calico Bass
(1) Unknown Rockfish (new species)
(2) Barred Surf Perch
(1) Yellow Fin Croaker

Hope you guys enjoyed the report and may you always find what you're looking for in the surf...

Your posts always motivate me to strive and be a better angler. Nothing like being alone with the past time you love the most eh? I feel the same way about diving, sometimes after a loong week of busting my knuckles and leaving work drenched in diesel fuel and oil a good night dive is in order to release all the negative energy built up from that. Like always man u slayed it, keep em coming for those of us that live vicariously thru you lol!

Kelp sucks, unless your in a paddy slayer bringing in YT or big Calico's!!!

awesome job as always.

I used to fish up there a lot (went to UCSB). There's a lot of tar in the water. I used to fish off a raft in the kelp beds, and some days I would end the day with a spool full of brown line from the tar. Pretty nasty.

I had an early six thirty in the morning tee time yesterday at the club and thought to myself, Arthur should be in the surf right about now. I don't know how you do it man. Work harder than anybody I know and also play harder than anybody I know. You're not a spring chicken anymore, but I guess it's true that you're only as old as you feel. I will always remember what you told me a few years back, "Never grow up, once you decide to grow up, you grow old..." Spoken like a forty year old, who looks like a thirty year old, dresses like a twenty year old, and acts like a ten year old. Thanks for the great post Arthur. I agree its a grass rockfish, caught about 4 of them on sunday out at santa cruz. Would love to fish the surf with you someday just to learn a few tricks and spend some quality time with a friend. Am so happy you like to spend some time physically alone but very much in the best of company in your thoughts. Be very good to see you at Legends end of the month. Take care. OFG

Another great report Arthur :!!!:

Too bad about the rest of the "crew" being down or busy. Guess they missed out!?! Hope BONES is feeling better and Steve is being safe out there.

I'd like to volunteer to fish w/you next time your "out this way", but you're just a fishin' machine and there's no way I could keep up w/you. When I was younger (MUCH younger) I might have been able to keep up, but not now. Maybe I can meet up with you and the "crew" next time you're out this way.

My first experience with Invisix also has me curious. Have only used it fishing for Mr. Stripppeeeee out at Castaic and by the end of my second trip with it, mine is also turning a light brown/bronze color. I don't understand it myself as my fly fishing tippet has never changed color before!

VERY NICE 'BUT. I've never caught one that big off the surf (lots on the boat though :Big Grin: ). One day I'd love to get one from the surf...I'll bet they're a kick.

Thanks for the great read and keep 'em coming.
LW
btw; should have my new surf gear in the next couple of weeks. :Dancing Banana:

Looks like another killer outing for you Wingnut.
Way to go on all the fish.
I have noticed my Invis-X takes on dye too from Fairmount. Maybe another place or two, I forgot. Still pretty decent line regardless but I thought that was weird too.

I've kept one of those fishing logs for all my bass fishing trips. It's amazing how much they can remind you of in a tough bite and helps to know/remember where to start if you haven't been to a body of water for a short while.

Lucas, I think IN2DEEP got it correctly by identifying it as a Grass Rockfish.
Dude, you need to head out there with us when Mike gets better.
The Yellows are fun to catch on light gear until you get involved with a big unit. I remember later on that same trip I got spooled on the same rig. But I did get nine of them that day! I was using that rig to get my Sardine out quick once we slid up to the kelp paddies and was always the first to hook up. I was on a private boat and it took forever bringing up those 15-25 lbs Yellows. It was so much fun, but I would never bring out the light stuff on a cattle or public charter, it would piss some people off.

Great report like always good job, hey I know the name of your new species its a calico transformer....
Ha ha, good one... it was one cool looking fish.

NIcely done once again! I dont know how you do it man...fishing around those boilers is tough and weeds are a pain in the @*$!

That is a gopher rockfish you caught...
Fishing in kelp & eel grass infested surf takes a special kind of patience, most of the time I don't even deal with it. But, when the salad attracts a heavy concentration of baitfish... the predators will be in the mix too.
Fishing boiler rocks is a little risky, but I'd trade a LC or two for a nice Calico or a legal Butt anytime. Congrats on the couple of really nice WSB Vic. I want to pull one of those out of the surf someday.

Awesome as usual Arthur...

You always find the energy to do what you love to do the most. I have no problems getting up at the crack of dawn for a tee time or be out there in the surf hopping waves all day. :Big Grin:
Give the man a cigar for helping me correctly identify the Grass Rockfish! PM me your mailing address and I'll send ya a Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110 for your troubles.
I destroyed two digital cameras before I got the Olympus Tough 8000. This camera is awesome. Shockproof, crushproof, waterproof, sandproof, freezeproof... Wingnut proof. Takes great underwater pics too. I also have a Panasonic Lumix waterproof camera, not as rugged, but takes great pics.
As for the Deep Blue, I used to do a lot of open water fishing many years ago. I've caught just about everything there is too catch out there. My old boss used to have a 60' Sportfisher and we would take it out with a crew just about every weekend. Sometimes, spending a few days out there. Having that kind of freedom and fishing on a private boat for years really got me spoiled. That's why chances are you will never find me on a cattle boat again. :Envious: I know that you can catch much bigger and more fish out there... but for me, it's no longer about catching the biggest or the most. It's all about the challenge of pulling them out of the surf. But to each his own... whatever your passion is.

Talk about golf, don't forget we have that charity event coming up next month Phuong. I'm working on putting together a winning foursome for us right now. As for the working & playing part, it's part of being "alive". You know what I always say, "Every day above ground is a good day..." Make the best of what life has to offer... cause you never know.

Man what a day. Great job out there. I love how so many different LC's produced for you. The Hali of the day is a real beauty. Keep up the great posts.
It really doesn't matter that much what your throw when the Flatties are on the chew. The hard part is finding them when they're in that mood.

Another great report Arthur!..... as usual!
Outstanding photos too... I like the close up of the Hali-head....

Good looking pug!
Based on the fact that PUG had on CLOTHING... I'm betting it was a bikini wearin' female walking her dog on the beach and you asked to pose with her for a photo and she thought you meant the dog! LOL! J/K!

I gotta go wake up 57 PUG..........
TTYL!

You got it Dana, the owner was quite easy on the eyes.
I got Wingnut Pug a doggie date.

Here is a pic of Wingnut Pug when she's about eight weeks old... she's almost nine now... how time flies.

Nice job once again.

That VisionMinnow is pretty gnarly with the outer barbs an all. Any ideas on where to get one?:Envious:
Kevin, check out this website. They're good people and do really nice custom work.

Take care. OFG
Been quite awhile since we shared the same set of surf... hey, that sounds kinda sexy. I'll see ya at the Surf Event and even sooner at Legends III Chris. Saving a big hug for ya.

My Friend! You are a true inspiration! I love the way you live life to the fullest! You work hard and play hard!
It may be selfish, but I've been so busy this Summer that some weeks I have only logged on to view your posts from my VCast phone!

You inspire me brother!

Stay True!
Eric, it was nice getting a call from ya today. I was wondering where you've been and was so happy to hear all about your fabulous summer vacation. You da man! I'll see you in a couple of weeks at Legends... with Mom's egg rolls in hand! :Big Grin:

Great report.. I have had these two since they were 8 weeks old. They are now 8 yrs old. These dogs are awesome tons of personality and are always up to something.

Thanks for sharing your Pugs with us Jerry, they're the best dogs aren't they? Smart, loyal and oh, so comical... she's my best friend.
Hope you've been nailing them out there.

Great report as usual.. Nice reel. I have the same model.. Any problems with your Calcutta DC in the surf?
Problems...? Just ask Frank (Nessie Hunter). On the average, I usually get a reel service after about three sessions in the surf. Frank has replaced drags, bearings, gears... you name the part, I've destroyed it at one time or another.
The problem with the DC is that once it gets submerged, the electronics shorts out and the digital backlash prevention feature is useless. You just have to adjust and do without it. But overall, it holds up pretty well to the saltwater & surf environment... even better than the Pluton.

I've never caught one that big off the surf (lots on the boat though ). One day I'd love to get one from the surf...I'll bet they're a kick.

Thanks for the great read and keep 'em coming.
LW
btw; should have my new surf gear in the next couple of weeks. :Dancing Banana:
Thanks for the kind comments LW. I appreciate that.
Where do you live and what areas do you fish? (you can PM me).
Yeah, pretty strange about the line discoloration, but I still swear by the InvizX. fluoro. Talk about fly fishing, I think I'm overdue for a fly fishing surf outing.
Halibut are fun to catch period, but pulling a legal out of the surf is an absolute blast. The challenge in finding and getting them on artificials is half the fun.
Enjoy your new surf gear and best of luck out there!

Funny about the Seaguar InvizX, I haven't heard about the discoloration until I experienced it myself. Now, it seems that I'm not the only one. Still a great line though. I know without a doubt that I would have lost several nice fish if it wasn't for this line, especially while I'm dropshotting when the line tends to drag accross the fish's teeth at times.
The fishing log is a must have tool for any serious angler. I can go back to any date of the year, check the catch ratio and and the conditions for that outing. Really helps you track the bite patterns and assist you on trying to duplicate the results.

Here are some of the data that I keep:
Date/Month/Year
Areas / Spots
Tide/swell conditions
Water temperature
Weather conditions
Wind conditions
Water clarity
Surf vegetation
Baitfish presence
Track all catch, whether a Perch or a Halibut.
What time of the day was most productive.
What did I catch them on... what artificial... what patterns?

The more you know... the farther you go.

nice fish! oh by the way, everyone who said its a gopher rockfish is wrong, thats a grass rockfish
Indeed, it is a Grass Rockfish.

Very inspirational report as others noted already. Unfortunately for me, I always happen to read your reports while I'm at work and can't concentrate for the rest of the day afterwards. I need to start saving your reports for after work reading.
Thanks Tammy, I suffer from the same "daydreamer" syndrome. Half of the time while I'm at work, physically I'm there... but my mind is somewhere out there in the surf. lol I'll see you & Mike in a couple of weeks at Legends III!

Another great post there Wingnut! Always a fun read. You always seem well prepared with the right equipment and research and the results are always there.. I have never really surf fished. Always just launched the kayak. But all these posts are giving me the itch to get out there and give it a shot.. Any advice on equipment that I really need to have success in the surf? I pretty much got the lures under control (dropshotting flukes, and LC's, etc). Any tips would be appreciated though. Great job out there!

Glad you got your fix in the surf Arthur. I have turned around sooooooo many times this year because of the conditions that it's rediculous. We definitely got spoiled last year with the awesome conditions. At 55, I'm getting particuliar about the days I go fishin. Some days, I just can't get up in the wee hours after painting houses all week. I would have joined you if you had asked, but I'm still planning on fishin giants next month. I'm attending so I can watch some others fish, and see how they fish differently. Til next month, cheers. Mikey

Arthur it looks like Poseidon rewarded you today after what you endured during the last surf session! Hard work pays off too as I can't imagine getting up at 4:30 and fishing until 8pm like you do. The variety up North looks nice, but the salad looks nasty. It's been like that up and down the coast, and I am looking forward to it clearing up. Like you said, eel grass and salad clumps make fishing very frustrating. Sick custom LC, and sorry to hear about the pelican. Both them and seagulls can't resist chasing an LC if they see it.

Sorry to hear about Mike too, and I think something is going around since I am pretty sick too (102.7 degree fever sucks). Hopefully both of us will be better and Steve will be off from work when the next surf trip rolls around!

The same gear you take out on your yak will do fine for fishing from the sand. If you already how to work the dropshot and hardbaits, you have a great head start. As for the other stuff... nothing beats spending time out in the surf, you will learn new things with every outing. Shoot me a PM if you have specific questions and I'll do my best to steer you in the right direction.

Damn, I should have called you Mikey. It would have been nice spending the day fishing with you up there. You know the SB area better than just about anybody. :Envious: So you're 55 years young... plenty more years to spend in the surf my friend. I consider you a surf Yoda. :Big Grin: I'll see you at the Hunting Giants event next month.

Damn Marc, you're sick too?!? Remember to take your vitamins and get a flu shot when it becomes available.
I'm hoping that our schedules will coincide one of these days so we all can have a joint adventure. That would be fun... we still need to initiate you into the S.W.A.T.
The package is on the way to you via UPS, you should have it anyday now, enjoy.

Helloooooooooooooo Arthur..........I'm still alive!
Finally bounced back from a super nasty systemic infection that started with an abcessed tooth. Pain killers and hardcore antibiotics are no fun dude.
By my calculations.......knowing where you started and ended your day......You covered about 370 miles!
Glad to see that it payed off for you brotha. See what happens when you aren't weighed down by old bones....LOL
Seriously........I don't know how you actually had enough energy to do that last leg of your trip. It was that place that tore me up last time and we didn't even start up in SB.

You are truely the inspiration we all need to better not only our fishing endeavors but our goals in life as well.

Keep up the great work my friend and thank you so much for your prayers.Still kinda sweating the physical and labwork but........ Hopefully after next week my health will be on the upswing and we can get back to our SWAT missions.

Good luck on sunday and give Bob a slap upside the head for me!

Glad to hear that you are recovering nicely Mike. Talking to you last week, I could tell that you were in some major pain. I hope there will be more good news to come.
You're off on the mileage... it was only 320 miles.
Feels kinda strange looking to my left or right in the surf and not seeing my wingman dropshotting away. We'll get back out there again the Sunday after the Legends event.
I'm glad that I mustard up just enough energy to hit that last spot. The extra effort helped me pull a Rabbit out of the hat again with a legal to end the day. You know me Mike, I don't do anything half a**, do it right or don't do it at all. :Envious: I'll see you next week at Legends and hopefully, you've recovered well enough for a Sunday session.
