Nope. Go with medium action. Fast action rods will lose you fish because they will tear the hooks out when a halibut head shakes. They don't cast as far as comparable medium action rods either.

I built my own rods for Hali fishing I use fast action rods and have never had a hook rip out.
I have lost fish do to a combination of things, but never on the hook up.
most rod rated 8-17lbs or even 10-20lbs fast action will bend pretty good because they are so thin at the tip.
I have built composite crank bait sticks rods and found them to parabolic for my liking.
most fresh water bass guys use this rods because they are ripping those crank bait fast thru the water.
but for halibut you crank slow and steady so the chance of ripping the lure out of the halis mouth are not there. specially if the rod is a 8'6" ft, that a long rod with a lot of give.
so all I built is 7'6 to 8ft that plenty long to get a good cast.
Here is a few of the rods I have built and use in the surf.

Phenix
ULTRA MBX 707ML 7'7" 8-17LB Fuji SiC Phenix 1/4-5/8oz Fast Med-Light

Graphite USA
83M 8’3” MOD-FAST MEDIUM 8-17 5/16-5/8

Rainshadow RX7 Graphite Crank Bait Rod Blanks
One Piece, Moderate-Fast Action
CB76MH 7'6" 10-20 3/8-1OZ Med-Heavy

What about medium/fast action? The medium ones cost alot.

I prefer a med-fast action for LC cranking. The full on med is a bit too parabolic and the fast a is a bit too stiff, but either will do fine for LC cranking. Look for a rod rated 8-17 or 10-20 and a casting rod. I prefer a 7'6" 10-20lb mod-fast for LC's and will be wrapping a Phenix X-10 when I have the time.

If the rods you are comparing are comparable models, the price should be the same. What is your budget and what rods are you looking at? We'd be able to offer more suggestions.

Actually, I think they're great rods for the price! Pretty light, sensitive, and nice on the eyes for a pretty decent price, but even better when it's on sale. Forgot which site it was, but one had them on sale for like $125 or something.
