Lake Isabella is awesome, about a two hour drive

Lake fishing for cats, bass, crappie and trout, not to mention the Kern River to tube down and hunt trout if that is your deal. Plenty of campgrounds, all the amenities if you don't want to rough it and lots to do....have fun wherever you go!

Nice side trip is the "trail of 100 giants", pretty cool if the kids have not seen the big trees yet...

i like isabella, and have stayed at tillie creek campground before. but the wind is so unpredictable, and can ruin the whole trip. just went to the muir wilderness in february and the trees are awesome, even brought a sequoia home that i bought there. it is now a wopping 6" high. lol, will probably consider the isabella trip, but decide the last few days after i see the weather report.

Labor day weekend to most is considered the last weekend of summer. Most recreation areas are jammed packed. I prefer to stay home. But who am I to talk, I'm going up to Kings Canyon that weekend.

where ever you go you should check if there is reservations available.where ever you go it will be jam packed for sure, especially if you want to pull the kids around on the tube, some places only allow certain number of water craft on the lake.

yeah you'll be lucky to get a spot on labor day. but you never know. check www.reserveamerica.com.

i was just browsing that site the other day... looking at how there wasn't a single beach camping spot available for at least 2 months... and all of a sudden ONE spot opened up. must have been a canceled reservation. i grabbed it and went camping 2 days later :) it really sucks how it's difficult to be spontaneous with camping. you have to plan it months in advance, unless you get lucky like i did.
