Saturday was the 46th annual Huckleberry Finn Fishing derby in Huntington Pier. This is a free derby for kid from ages 1-15. The derby is divided into 3 age groups (7 & Under, 8-12, and 13-15). They only award the 3 biggest fish in each group for the winners. Top 3 biggest fish wins 1st, 2nd and 3rd. and then there is the biggest fish of the day award ending the derby with the biggest prize giveaway. Its an awesome derby with tons of free giveaways and raffle prizes. I have been taking my 5 year old daughter for the last 4 years and my girlfrieds family has been going longer than i have. Every year she has placed in the top 3 for age division and she has won her age division once already. There were 250 contestants plus their family so there was a nice turnout on the pier. We usually manage a dozen or so yellow fin croakers, (ask my buddy Pat, he calls me the croaker King). This year the fishing conditions were a little tougher than usual, we only managed 1 YFC that weighed in at 0.4 lbs. I was a little bummed out but I noticed that nobody else was catching anything neither. In the end only 4 YFC were caught and my daughters YFC was the biggest fish of the day. She went home with the 1st place honor and won a Daiwa Millionaire Classic combo and a crap load of tackle including 1 free ¾ day trip from Newport Landing and a tackle tray full of Optimum Bait Diamond swim baits off all sizes.

It was a great experience for all, I highly recommend anyone who has kids to attend this Derby. Next year it will be on Saturday, August 14, 2010
