Went out to Balboa Monday a.m. with the wife. Arrived at 6:00 and "TRIED" to fish the channel near the Sheriffs docks.....No Luck, only eel grass (TONS). Moved over to the public dock near the ferry crossing and right away hooked a short halibut, 18" of fun. Then got onto a nice sand bass and some smaller spotties. The wind kicked up around 11:00 and I called it a day around 1:00pm. All in all a good day!

Nice! I stopped by there last Saturday before making the crossing and it looked pretty fishy. The docks 10 feet to the right of the dock looks like it would hold some nice bass.

If you don't mind, what were you using.

FYI; Balboa does not have a Bay....
Newport does have a Harbor though...
Newport Harbor (NPH)...

The Eel grass gets pretty thick in late summer. But there are spots/areas without any also. If your pulling up a bunch of weeds, go with a lighter lead head, and try and skim the weeds, or a drop shot rig... It will help a little..

Lot of history to the Islands and Peninsula called Balboa.. All of which are designated areas of the City of Newport Beach now...

At one time (late 1800's) there was actually a Sea Port back by the PCH bridge.
No Balboa Isl (or others) and the Peninsula was a sand bar/marsh and much shorter....

In the very late 1800's & early 1900's the Island was a dumping spot for Dredged up silt from the shipping lanes, its grown some since then. LMAO...
WOW, $25 dollar lots, circa 1920/30's ($3 million now)... :EyePop:
