After hearing about the great bass fishing and the 57 pound seabass on the Tradition yesterday, I was eager to hop on the boat today for some good action with an outstanding crew. Today our crew consisted of Captain Anthony Le, Shawn in the galley, and John on deck. We rolled off the dock with 10 anglers, and got some really nice anchovies and sardines from the New Sunbeam. Anthony said we'd be starting out in an area that was very good yesterday. Plastics were getting bit, he said, as well as the usual bait rig. We soon got to the fishing grounds, and the fishing took off.
Fishing was great, as some nice sized bass were coming over the rail. Everyone caught plenty of fish. I tried all sorts of different rigs. Of course, the plastic, then a 1/2 ounce slider with an anchovy, and a leadhead with an anchovy (dubbed the "John Petrov Special"). Everyone soon had plenty of bass, and we moved on to try some drifts where they got the seabass the day before, and got ripped by a couple of bigger fish. We tried a drift, but there was nothing except a few bass or sculpin bites. We soon moved on to a little deeper water. I was using a reverse dropper loop with a 4 oz. torpedo sinker, and got bit on one of my drops. I immediately knew what it was, as the classic headshake came into play. I had to adjust my drag accordingly to its runs, or the hook would have pulled. It took off a couple times before I was able to slowly subdue it. I got it to color, and Anthony stuck it. I'm glad I adjusted my drag because the hook was in the cartilidge of the lip (which is a great place to hook them anyway, avoding the teeth). Definitely my personal best fluke. It weighed just over 30 pounds.
Anthony was certainly content with putting us on at least one nice halibut, so we drifted for a few more minutes, and went down to fish the kelp to try for a seabass. The swell had rolled over the water, but we did catch some more calicos and little barracuda They were biting the plastic very well at this spot, too. After a while, with about limits of bass and my nice halibut, we called it a day and headed for the barn. Everyone went home with smiles and full sacks. Great times, great fishing!!
