Went to Newport Harbor Saturday morning with Latefisher and his brother, our main target was Halibut.

My main plan was to fish Gulp alive but we decided to get the guys some bait as plan B.

While we were waiting our turn at the bait receiver I made a quick showing with 4 fish I think on 4 concecutive casts..

1st 2 were macks…

#3 was a short Halibut
(didnt photo)

#4 was a Spotted Bay bass.
(didnt photo)

We got our bait (racehorse sardines ) and went hunting Halibut….things were pretty slow and the halibut were not prominently in the area it appeared.

We continued to sling the gulp rather than bait…

I caught another Spottie or 2

Johns brother decided to try a pc of cut sardine since the bait was so huge !

Sandbass Hookup…saweet

Nice solid fish brotha ! – congrats !

And then John gets his skunk shakin fish

A short, but a halibut nonetheless..(good job John)

We scratched at fish here and there and johns brother landed a couple more short sandbass

And we all caught another Spottie or 2.

We went back around the bait barge for more solid action.

We picked at Short Baracuda when we targeted the surface zones…

And slayed away at the spotties down in the bottom registers..

All in all a really great day out in the bay, unfortunately our illusive legal class flatties were nowhere to be found after trying several of my go to flatfish zones..

We caught too many fish to count but I’d guess it was in the 20-30 per angler count for spotties and probably 5 or so short cuda each and about 6-8 sandbass each plus the 2 macks.

Those are probably conservative estimates, a really fun day out in the bay and solid action filled with many hookups..

A couple noteworthy items:

At one point, john was fishing near the bait barge and managed to accidently sling into one of the open bait pens..

It was HILARIOS !

He was trying to get his jig out and his rod started shakin’…..seems as though he ended up either snagging a racehorse sardine or or it took the jig…who knows but he had a hookup in the bait pen…..
Talk about shooting fish in a barrel !
Ha ha ha ! too funny

AND
The seals were giving us a real run that day as they kept taking out cudas (apparently their desired meal that day)

At one point, I was pulling one out of the water and the seal launched out and up going after it !

About 3’ out of the water

After a few select words from me telling the seal what I thought and how I was the victor, I lowered the fish back, about 2’ up over the surface…

Sure enough…that sucka came back….launching and doing acrobatics…

I taunted him at least 7 times and he was caught in a frenzy of acrobatic fancy !

We were treated to a seaworld quality seal show !

At one point we thought he was gonna fly into the boat….he was clearing at least 4’ out of the water at times..

I couldn’t hold the laughter back, it was a crack up !

On the last leap ! he finally got my cuda and took off with it..
It was 1 time when I felt the seal actually earned his free meal..

We didn’t really take a lot of pix as these fish were no trophies but it was just way too much fun out there !

Till next time,
Gary

Way to go on the nice day in the harbor, love that place!
The fish count indicates a busy & fun day. I've been lucky with the Sea Dogs in that harbor, every time that I've been there, they've been pretty lazy & docile. More interested in lounging on boats than chasing our fish.

Good job guys as always. I've never caught a legal halibut at NPH. Tons of shoties though. Got my biggest (21 1/2") at the CDM cove by the cliffs. It's kinda weird how NPH has sooooo much life and such a diverse amount of species but it never puts out the bigger model flatties.
