Made plans to hit the surf with Mike (Bones), Marc (BSP) and Marc's Dad today. Met up early and started the surf assault. We were expecting a pretty easy going day due to the projected flat surf conditions. But we were wrong... constant swells, washing machine conditions with the added on-shore wind made it tough out there. Marc & his Dad joined Mike and I for a morning session and a nice lunch break. Then Mike & I continued on with an evening assault.

Conditions: Warm and sunny day. Rough surf conditions. Water clarity fair. Moderate salad. Small amount of baitfish showing early in the morning, but disappeared by mid-morning. Strong on-shore wind all day lasting into the evening.
Techniques: Bones (DropShot) Wingnut & BSP (Lucky Craft FM110).
Fishing was fair at best and we did relatively well considering the rough conditions at this spot.
Fish count (all released)
BSP - (1) Short Halibut
Bones - (6) Short Halibut (1) Calico (1) YFC
Wingnut - (7) Short Halibut (4) Calico
Casualties: The rod tip on my Shimano Cumara baitcaster snapped on the very first short Flattie of the morning. No worries, lifetime warranty.
Marc got turned upside down in the surf by a rogue wave and lost his presciption sunglasses and his lucky cap.

We were all completely soaked at one time or another. I had to empty out my waders several times.

Here are some pics of our fun day in the surf.

That was one heck of a workout! We had a great time despite the tough conditions and the less than stellar bite. Mike, you know where we need to go next weekend to redeem ourselves. Marc & Dad... a pleasure to fish with you guys again, that was quite a workout we had today. Looking forward to hitting the surf with you two again before the Summer is over. I'll see ya at the Surf Event!

Good luck out there everybody and remember to release more than you keep.

Sounds like Poseiden was not quite done make waves out there this weekend, glad to hear there were no major injuries or losses. Sorry to hear about the glasses BSP, but I got a brand new lucky hat to replace the one you sacrificed to the deep blue sea! Hope to see you at Legends to give it to ya.

Arthur another great report buddy, thanks! Hey I was wondering if you could tell if there was much difference in the area you fished prior to the high surf last week...in other words did it create any large troughs etc. I got a surf trip planned this week so I'll be interested to see what things look like out there now.

See ya soon,

WOW.....What a day of absolute fun and TORTURE....LOL
I'm so sore today I almost didn't work!
Kinda like when you go snowboarding for the first time in the season and can't move the next day!
We climbed mountains and cliffs.....We got tugged, toppled and churned up in the wind swell.
We hit the sand as soon as we could see the water and didn't leave until the sun set. Another 14 hour assault tackled and put in the archives!

I think sometimes folks here don't realize how much ground we cover in a long day and sometimes..........It's all we can do to just scratch up a handfull of shorties!

All in all.......It's always a pleasure to fish with you Arthur but yesterday kicked my azzzzzz!

Funny highlight of the day was when I saw that breaker comming and Marc was a little behind me. I decided to rush the set and do the bobbing thing and I hear a big whooosh !
I turn and Marc is GONE!......Then he surfaces with no glasses and no hat.
My laughter turned to remorse as soon as I realized they were prescription glasses....Really sucks but.....Live and learn. That's why Arthur and I wear contacts in the surf!
Marc....
It was a pleasure finally meeting you and your father. I'm truely sorry about your glasses but here is a funny twist.......There is a 40" plus halibut wearing your glasses as we speak and now she can see us comming. Now see what ya did....LOL

Crazy highlight of the day.....
It's 7pm and we find ourselves back in the first spot we fished at greylight. I felt like I was in bootcamp and the day was a vicious circle. As we worked the area my legs just gave up and I had to sit down on the rocks. I look off into the windswell washing machine and there is Arthur.....Laughing......hollering.....singing.... .....And I finally realized......He is INSANE..LOL

Insane in a good way though.....I tip my hat to you Arthur....
Your a man on a mission!
Thanks for everything once again buddy!

Even though I fish almost exclusively from shore in popular areas like Dana Point and NPH, I have NEVER encountered DFG while fishing, or seen them checking anyone else and I am lucky enough to spend a lot of time fishing.

And yet the bucket brigade is a huge reason the MLPA stuff is happening...

How about getting some wardens out there writing tickets instead of spending money working to and establishing areas where we won't be able to fish?

That was one of the most amusing but frustrating days in the surf I've had. The company definitely made up for getting owned by that rogue wave and losing my glasses and hat, so overall the day was fun. The fishing was less than stellar for me with only one pancake to show for my efforts. Definitely not what I was hoping for, but at least I beat the skunk down.

Mike and Arthur, I definitely had an awesome time fishing with the two of you on my first SWAT mission. It was a little more intense than what I normally do, but I am looking forward to doing it again. Your guys jokes and attitude overhwhelmingly made up for what otherwise would have been a fairly unsuccessful day. Thanks for that, it was fun. Also, I really appreciate you guys talking with my dad since he couldn't fish. He said both of you guys were great to talk to.

Mike, it was great meeting you for the first time and I hope to fish with you again soon. About that halibut, I doubt my glasses will help her when we hit that spot again. They only will help her find our LCs and Flukes better! Lol.

Arthur, thanks again for everything, especially allowing me to borrow the Chronarch after my massive backlash. This happened when Arthur and I decided to go hit up some boiler rocks for calicos. I had already lost my glasses by this time, so I waded out farther than Arthur did. I didn't know that Arthur had already cast out, and my LC caught his line on the way out and caused a massive backlash for my Luna. Also, "Ball slappers! WHY?!?!?!"

Thanks to the guys who expressed concern over the glasses. I got a new pair today, and I'll pick up one of those lanyard things (even though I hate them) to make sure this doesn't happen again. Troutdog, I am sorry to say I probably won't make it to Legends III, but if it's ok with Arthur please give him the hat and he'll give it to me when we hit the surf again. Thanks!

Fianlly, I agree that the MB surf festival and volleyball tournament were fun. I hit them both up on Saturday, and it was worth it.

Arthur, killer big eye tuna picture too. You look the same in that picture as you do now.... and that picture is as old as I am (wow, can't believe I can actually say that). Congrats!

Dad, Marc, Mike, & Arthur!!!!!

Looked like some tough conditions but time together with friends makes up for the adverse conditions!

I know what it is like to have the highest hopes for a good day together and then it turns into a grind but with friends sharing stories and jokes and then it turns into laughter as we see each other get pounded by the adverse conditions and try to not be the poor sole who takes the worst licking from mother nature!!!!!!

At least conditions were not like this in a photo taken by my son Brad at the Wedge last Saturday!
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z286/flyngby/romo_wedge.jpg

Great job to all for hanging in there and sticking it out for a good day for most!!!

I heard that garibaldis are tasty and they turn your tongue orange when you eat them.
Can't believe you found the energy to go surf fishing after the party Saturday night Arthur. Watching those girls taking turns sitting on your lap made ME tired. I have weekend pass coming up in a couple of weeks, we're doing some hali hunting very soon my friend.

Thanks for the pics and report looks like you guys had a fun day out there sucks about the no legals and lost gear but those are some nice calico bass and looks like you guys found a nice spot for em. That really is sad looking at the Bucket picture the caribaldis are really cool looking fish esp if you see them swimming around in the water looks like a big gold fish and the calicos did not even get to spawn . nice work on them feesh....a solid day to say the least, they all cant be record breakers, I'd say it was a day to remember as all fishing days are..

attacking the conditions and besting them in their own front yard.

Congrats...

Me thinks I will be returning to the scene of my crime from the moster surf weekend to seek my revenge on the big toad that got away that weekend..

I hope you've left some o those surf fishies for me....I've got a little payback for posideon myself....not that he wasnt actually kind the last time out by :

Not killing me in the surf (I think my sheer will kept me alive !)

I didn't notice much change in the structures at this location. This area didn't get the massive waves that hit some of the other open beaches the past weekend. We pick & choose our spots carefully and was monitoring the swells at this location closely and it never got over 2 feet even when the big waves were hitting other areas. Good luck on your surf trip Aaron, wherever you're going.

Looks like you guys had lots of fun, sorry to hear about your shimano rod what a bummer ohwell lifetime warranty. , thanks for the great report.
Yeah, the Cumara will be replace soon enough. Too bad it snapped fighting a 18 inch short though. :Rolls Eyes:

I like the one shot you have of that calico with a "surprised" look on his face :)

Man, can't believe someone would take a garibaldi....that fine is like $5K isn't it? Lame.
Love those Calicos, they're scrappy fighters. Not sure how much the fine is for killing a Garibaldi. I would imagine pretty severe as it is a California State fish.

Nice job boys, fishing with wet waders sucks.
Those people who kept the illegal fish probably don't even know they did anything wrong.
Fishing in heavy, wet and water-filled waders is even worse. As Mike always points out, I'm shorter than everybody so I take on more water when skipping waves.
You're probably right Vince, they just looked at us with a blank stare and acted like they don't speak any English and couldn't understand us.

Nice job Arthur....i love seeing Calicos in the surf....excellent report....

I have to admit... they're a lot more fun the catch than a Perch.

Thanks for everything once again buddy!
I remember seeing the look on your face when Marc says that we were going to scale the side of the cliff over to the next spot. I think your exact words were, "We're gonna do @#*! what...?!?" Then we proceeded to go on a almost vertical climb in wet & heavy waders. Up and down we go... several times, people just don't know what we go through just to get to the fish. They just see the nice pictures and think, hey, that looks easy, and fun. Well, they're right... and wrong. It is fun, but not so easy.
As for Marc getting owned by the waves... I didn't see the one that took his glasses & hat. But he was standing next to me when another rogue swell lurched up suddenly... I moved forward and took on some water, the 5 foot wave came straight down on Marc and rolled him. When he popped up out of the foam, one of his wading shoes were floating in the surf. He was a little disoriented and I had to grab his arm and turned him towards the shoreline and we walked out of the surf together. Marc is quite a "Surf Trooper".
Now for the temporary insanity defense... I knew that you were over extending yourself out there Mike, I can see your legs wobbling as we moved through the surf. When you went & sat down for a break, I was merely trying to re-energize you by humming the tune of Apocolypse Now, while yelling "You can do it... one more time!" and laughing at the conditions that Poseidon was sending our way. Then shortly after that, he hit me with a wicked wave and I joined you... sitting there on the rocks, defeated.

Nice report, you guys always seem to find the goods. Speaking of goods, you all should've checked out the surf festival in manhattan, mucho skin, very yummy!
Our original plan was to head for Manhattan Beach after lunch, but decided to stay for the afternoon/evening surf session. Shoulda went to check out the eye candy, uh... I mean the volleyball competition instead.

Marc, all I have to say is that you're one heck of a "Surf Trooper". Mike & I had a sense that you were trying to prove that you can keep up with the old S.W.A.T. guys... and yes, we were impressed. There is much to learn young "Grasshopper". Your dad was great... there to cheer on the team and watching over us from the sand. Even when you lost your prescription glasses, I know that he was disappointed but totally understanding at the same time. He IS your support staff, way to go Dad! :Big Grin:
As for the Tuna pic... yes I do believe that I'm suffering from the Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I'm aging backwards...
Thanks for joining Mike & I for the surf assault, we truly enjoyed the company of you & your Dad.
Until we meet again... but before we say goodbye, I have to ask... "WHY?!?"

wheres big mr flatop,,,,,,
Mr. Big Flat Top was granted a pardon for the weekend Bob... his luck will run out by next weekend.

You guys always have such a good time when you head out the the surf. I know that you've invited me to tag along a few times before Art and I'm going to start working out so I can keep up with you boys. Good to see you at the birthday party Saturday night Art, you left pretty late and I know you didn't get much sleep, if any before you hit the surf. We're currently planning our Laughlin trip, you better make it bro.
Whenever you're ready Binh, you have an open invitation to hit the surf with me anytime. You're right, I had zero sleep before the 14 hour surf assault.
I'll see what I can do about Laughlin. I haven't been there since my last bike ride to the "River Run" several years ago.

Mike,

Did Arthur take you up my short cut to the parking lot?:Bug Eyes: Or did you all stick to the normal tourist trails!!!!!:Neener Neener:

Steve
We were missing one of our S.W.A.T. members because you weren't there Steve. Funny, we were talking about how you do these kind of intense hikes almost on a daily basis. The spot that you took me up in the other area was crazy. We almost needed some rope and a pick axe... at one point, half way up the hill, I was saying to myself... I think I'm going to need and Medivac helicopter. Let's try and plan a trip together soon my friend.

No problem Marc, worst case scenario I can hand deliver it to you at the surf event in Sept

Arthur great "flashback" addition to the post, beautiful big eye tuna btw! That is also a species that has eluded me to date, great picture....

TD
I remember that day like it was yesterday Aaron, that fish had me on the ropes a few times. I still can taste the fresh Sashimi with rice & soy sauce a few minutes after that fish hit the deck... priceless memories. Are there even an abundance of those Big Eyes out there anymore? I haven't been out on the Big Blue in years...

Looking forward to it Aaron, and thanks again! Thread Jack over Arthur. lol.
See you both at the Surf event!

I think the checkered shorts scared the fish away LOL

Thanks for the great read as usual Arthur...
The shorts actually hypnotizes the Flatties Vic.

I heard that garibaldis are tasty and they turn your tongue orange when you eat them.
Can't believe you found the energy to go surf fishing after the party Saturday night Arthur. Watching those girls taking turns sitting on your lap made ME tired. I have weekend pass coming up in a couple of weeks, we're doing some hali hunting very soon my friend.

btw, thanks for hooking Lauren up with her new Blackberry, she loves it! Now see what you can do for me on the Palm Pre.
I think people eat Garibaldi down in Mexico all the time... tastes like a Perch I would assume.
I had a great time at the party, saw some dolls that I haven't seen in a long time and engaged in some harmless flirting.
Let me know when the wife let you out on a weekend furlow buddy. We'll plan a surf trip, just like the old days.
You want a Palm Pre...? I can't even get one for myself... Call me next week, I'll hook ya up.

( I did eat caribaldi soup in Mexico it was so good :Big Grin: )

Bigred
Yeah Lucas, you need to head out with us... been a long time. Why don't you out yourself on the alternate list for the Surf Event?
You ate Garibaldi?!? Did your tongue turn orange...?

Sounds like a great day given the conditions. Your reports are always worth he read. I love the flashback 1992 shots!

SFE
Thanks Big "E"! Where have you been? Haven't seen much of you on the boards lately. Hope all is well my friend. See ya at Legends III. :Big Grin:

nice work on them feesh....a solid day to say the least, they all cant be record breakers, I'd say it was a day to remember as all fishing days are..

attacking the conditions and besting them in their own front yard.

&
allowing me 3 humble fish

Again nice job...nice pics,
Gary
Good luck on your return trip to the surf Gary. Conditions won't be nearly as tough as the last time that you guys went out. Get that big one that got away! Looking forward to your report... I haven't decided where I'm going this weekend yet.

Great report. Seems like u guys had a rough but fun day despite you're down falls. No car shot this time? First the Rover then the Challenger. What's next, the M6 or the CLS55 AMG:Big Grin:
Thanks man, it was a rough day, but oh yeah, lots of fun and we got a great work out.
No cars this time... they didn't have the rental that I wanted to drive for the weekend. :Big Smile:

Great report Wingnut,

It was an interesting read.

If your going to empty your waders a couple times a day, wouldn't it be easier without them?

Thank you sir.
You're right about the waders. I usually go light after I get soaked. But I didn't feel like hiking all the way back to the car to get my wading sandals. NEVER surf fish barefoot! Sting Rays, broken glass, jagged rocks, needles... not worth the risk. I always bring two sets of waders and several change of clothes everytime I hit the surf.

Until we meet again... but before we say goodbye, I have to ask... "WHY?!?"

Glad that I made a favorable impression on you guys. Was it how I effortlessly backlashed, got dramatically knocked down by waves, or managed to rack up the lowest fish count of the day?

In all seriousness Arthur, I really do appreciate the compliment. Coming from you in means a lot. I am looking forward to our next few trips in the sand since I have quite a bit to learn from you and Mike both. I like to think I can keep up with the two of you, but I know that's not the reality. One day maybe, but not now. Still, I've got a few ideas of my own that you two haven't seen in action yet. Think Calicos, and maybe WSB.

My only hint is 50lb braid. :Secret:

As for Dad, I need to figure out something nice to do for him once he can fish again. As you said, he is my support staff and deserves quite a bit of credit. Only thing left for him is to get the action photography dialed in until his arm heals. Some shots of us jumping waves would look legit...

Thanks again man!

You're well on your way Marc... you got the right attitude and the perfect amount of enthusiasm. I'm hoping that your dad's arm gets better so he can join us in the surf on our next round. See ya soon. I'm off to kill some more Stripers on Sunday.

Thanks Chris... I'll see you and CRVZ in a few weeks at Legends 3.
