After bragging about Vail so much on our reunion, I took my brother-in-law fishing for a half day on my birthday. My first b-day present: a few min after pulling the boat off the trailer, motering over to tie up at the doc, the engine dies. No problem it's probably a little cold, so I try, and try and try, can't get it started (never did). IT IS MY BIRTHDAY DAMN IT, I AM GOING FISHING!!!!! I HAVE A FULLY CHARGED TROLLING MOTOR AND I'M NOT AFRAID TO USE IT!!! Second b-day present, no shad; tried (the legal way) with a dip net, for nothing. No problem, been expecting this.
So my "A" and "B" spots are too far away, but my "C" spot is accessible, so we moter (trolling motor that is) over to a bank and there are signs of life. Some surface action, so we give it a go with top waters: nada. I went to spinner baits (3rd b-day present, I lost 2 more spinner baits without a fish) while Marc went to crank baits. We think we both got a few hits but nothing to stick. I go to drop-shot gulp minnow and Mark Carolina rig watermelon worm. I got the first fish, and Marc followed up with the second about 15 min. later. We tried a few different color worms (We both got a few on purple robo worm) and I caught a few on nightcrawler (including a 5lb cat).
The real birthday present came when I was throwing a White ice Zoom fluke: my personal best 7lb-14oz beast. Yesssssss!!! We called it a day kinda early about 12:30, we each got 6 or 7 fish.
