Saturday was supposed to be spent hanging out in the surf with a fishing rod in my hand, but the conditions dictated otherwise so I decided to hit the Wedge and check out the massive surf that was pounding the South facing beaches...the spot where it all came to the head being "the Wedge" outside NPH.

Found a parking spot around 9am and the first thing I saw as I approached the beach was a very welcome sight, the DFG checking stats and asking questions....

A quick shot as I walked towards the rocks to meet up with Timster, lots of people were already lined along the beach watching the surfers out on the water
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/troutdog_photobucket/July25th2009TheWedge005.jpg

Not too much later...can you say "move back a little"?
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/troutdog_photobucket/July25th2009TheWedge032.jpg

On the other side of the jetty it was a much calmer scene...a new member ready to do battle with Koshaw and 2Quick in the ongoing saga of "Rod Wars"!!!
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/troutdog_photobucket/July25th2009TheWedge030.jpg

Cold beverage anyone?
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/troutdog_photobucket/July25th2009TheWedge009.jpg

John Wayne's old boat "Wild Goose" even got out to check out the waves
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/troutdog_photobucket/July25th2009TheWedge111.jpg

Granted it was nothing compared to the other side of the jetty, but check out the rollers along the breakwall heading towards the bait barge
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/troutdog_photobucket/July25th2009TheWedge010.jpg

With rod wars being represented, "Camera Wars" were being waged by many....spearheaded by none other than Timster!!!

Ch7 was not going to miss the action....
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/troutdog_photobucket/July25th2009TheWedge106.jpg

There were literally thousands of dollars of camera and video equipment present
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/troutdog_photobucket/July25th2009TheWedge084.jpg

In all sorts of shapes and sizes...
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/troutdog_photobucket/July25th2009TheWedge060.jpg

These dudes had lap tops at the beach to set up their gear
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/troutdog_photobucket/July25th2009TheWedge062.jpg

Check out the people in the tree trying to check out the waves
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/troutdog_photobucket/July25th2009TheWedge035.jpg

Okay so what is the big deal? Why the crowd?
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/troutdog_photobucket/July25th2009TheWedge015.jpg

Only experienced swimmers/surfers/boarders were allowed in the water
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/troutdog_photobucket/July25th2009TheWedge107.jpg

Photos don't ever do the waves justice, but try and use the people in the water as a reference for size....

The various rescue boats in the area did a great job when they were needed

Rescue boat took the tired swimmer around the jetty to be dropped off in safe waters

TM65's dream job..."there ain't no 5mph zone past the breakwater bro"

Personally I liked my vantage point just fine...

Yeah it was very unfortunate a life was lost on Friday, that jetty can be very dangerous if you get caught in the wrong spot. Thanks for props pargo lsb.

Spent a good part of my youth risking life and limb bodysurfing the Wedge. Got a few neck jams but still have use of all my limbs.

Thanks for taking me back.

Hi, Thanks for the awesome pictures! It was nice to see newports' finest in action. they work hard everyday to keep everyone safe, and the crowds under control. I hope you don't mind if I share your pics with some of the guards. they will get a kick out of seeing themselves at 'work'.

It looked pretty dangerous out there, certainly not a sport for the faint at heart....glad you never seriously hurt yourself. Thanks for the reply.

i know everyone thinks those waves are super scary and huuuuge but to tell u the truth anyone can swim out at wedge with a good pair of fins in the right conditions. its not a far swim and the rip is always in the same place and the bigger it gets there the safer it is. if any of u guys who do those underwater shots wanted, all u have to be is a decent swimmer to take pics there. if you are taking off on waves thats a different story.

Hi,

I added a photo of the Piling support (community Photo/albums) that was broken off from the wave action. What is left hanging is about 15ft long, 50 ft sections broke off and eventually floated north to county beach, where it was removed. The wedge is a tricky area, especially with a front side break of almost 20ft and a shallow shore break. You won't catch me swimming there with 20 footers... True, the rip is always in the same direction. a regular boarder was killed that week, and lots of tired swimmers were rescued, a few had no business being out there, and were very lucky.
