Hey guys Im doing a 5 day on the Royal Star and I did the same trip 2 years ago but we were Island fishing yellowtail so everything we were fishing was on 40# and heavier but I know this year there will be alot of albacore and bluefin offshore so I was curious to see what line test would be good. I was thinking 20-30 but wanted to get some feedback. The trip is August 7-12th so fishing should be good. Any input is greatly appreciated!!

Hey bigfish420,

Lucky you going on a nice trip just as the fish start biting!!! Totally jealous!
I would recomend if you have it, to take multiple setups.

I would bring the following:

20# setup
30# setup
40# setup
and just incase 15# and 50# leader.

These setups will have you covered fore sure!

good luck looking forward to a great report!

Lol yeah the Royal Star is a sweet outfit and should be great this year. I am taking 10 outfits but 6 outfits will be setup with 40# and only 2 20# setups, maybe I should make 2 of the 40# setups into a 25# and a 30# that way I will be covered. Just wasnt sure what they have been getting the bluefin on.

Nice! Seems like you got all the angles coverd! I have seen it when guys only have 1 or 2 setups and they go on a long trip.......then wonder why they didn't kill them lol!

Let me ask a few buddies what has been working and I will get back to you.

If your offshore and fishing the bird schools or paddy hopping for albies, tuna and yellowtail 25/30# would be the most common used outfit. If it's WFO or the bigger models you can probably step it up to 40 or even 50#.

When you get to the islands like Cedros or Guadalupe you'll mainly want to use 40# with flouro. If it's a pick bite you may have to go down to 30#

Good luck. I'm jealous. No 5 day trip for me this year. :(

Here's a list of setup's I took with me last year on my 5 day

1 - 15#
1 - 20#
2 - 25#
2 - 30#
2 - 40#
1 - 60/80#
1 - 100#

I wound up using 25, 30 and 40 for the entire trip. The 15# rig came in handy when we were fishing for the calico's. 20/25# would have been fine for the calico's since these were freaking toad calico's, but it was more fun on 15#.

Yeah I hear ya, same thing when we went last time. Used 40# for just about the whole trip except when doin the dropper loop of course. Thanks again for your input!! Your right on those calicos, just monsters over there for sure.

Fresh One !!!

Hey big fish
Hows it going. I too am going on the Michael Q invitational on the Royal Star Aug 7-12. Cool to know that there is another FNNer in the group. We must have met 2 years ago as I was on that trip also. I killed it !! Look forward to seeing you again. I will be taking multiple outfits as well. I believe in always being prepared for whatever you might run into. You just never know when you will run into a school of BFT in the 50-80 range or Albies in the 25-40 pound range. My guess is we will be fishing off shore with the recent Albie and Bluefin bite. I am sure we will spend a day at Cedros wiping up on yellowtail as well. Here is what I am bringing:

1-80# Trolling Rig
1-60# dropper loop for yellowtail
1-50# just in case
4-40# 3 Bait & 1 jig
1-30# Bait
1-25# Bait
1-20# Bait

Remember if the fish are picky, you can always downsize the 40# outfits with 30# or 25# Floro leaders. Good Luck and I am sure we will meet there Friday morning.

Oh yeah, if you need anything for the trip, I sell rods, reels tackle etc, from my garage. Everything I have is brand new in the box. I carry salt as well as freshwater gear...

A big thanks to everyone that has responded here as it is always good to hear from multiple sources...

Give me a call....
AAAWWW Fresh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
