I haven't been to the Elkhorn Slough in well over 15 years. I stopped going because I never really caught much. I was also tired of picking ticks off me every time I went fishing at San Justo, so I thought that fishing right from my car at Kirby Park would be an improvement.

For the first two hours, I just got crabs messing with my bait. I'd reel the line in to check it and a crab would be at the end; they'd let go at the surface. This was getting a little frustrating, so I started fishing from the boat dock. I changed to a 3 ounce sinker to get a little more distance as well. This did the trick.

Within the next half hour, I caught two stingray (using squid). The first one had to be at least fifteen pounds. I thought at first that I was caught on the bottom, but once I got it to the docks, it was clear it was a ray. I didn't want anything to do with it so I cut the line. The next one fought like a typical fish and wasn't as big as the first...maybe close to ten pounds. I cut this one loose as well. I was really hoping for a leopard shark.

For the next two hours, I was fighting with the crabs again! I enjoyed myself for 5 hours and didn't get any ticks. What more could you ask for?
