Working at Manzanar, exploring Mt Whitney/Fishing 6-25

These past few days have been long days at work. Not to mention since I first moved up to the Sierras a week ago for this 6 month internship at Manzanar I got really sick! For some reason all my allergies acted up, and I got the worst cold ever! Anyways, I have been going stir crazy being up here and having to sleep the entire weekend. Today was my first day out again with this cold almost gone.

I worked at Manzanar today with the boys. We crawled around underneath and helped work on the cement slabs that lay the foundation for the new mess hall. There is a huge restoration project going on at Manzanar where they want to re-do an entire block and make it look the way the rest of the 36 blocks did in the camp. This way the public can come in and see what it was really like living in the camp for the Japanese.

Anyways, it was a long work day outside. Previously me and the boys had gone to the Mt Whitney Fish Hatchery which was pretty sweet. I have never seen soooo many trout in one place at the same time. We got a tour and the guy there told us about whirling disease which is rather odd for fish to have I thought. Anyways, that trip really got me to wanting to fish.

Soooo….after a long work day today my original plan was to go fish at Georges Creek. I decided to be a bit more adventurous and drove to the base of Mt Whitney. Heheheh! What a beauty!!! I went exploring!

Sooo I found a great place to fish at the base of the trail. I could see lots of rainbows swimming around!!

I fished from 6-8pm and got a couple nice rainbows once again. The tricks at this one were a little different than the other place I have fished at previously but what a beauty!

My next adventurous thing is to climb Mt Whitney with some friends! That will rock!

Alright….well it was a great day but long….I am ready to hit the sack.

Great report...I just spent a couple of days with Ranger Rickey and Ranger Kurt down here in Los Angeles. We did some oral histories and scoured the original docments from archives at the Young Research Library at UCLA. Very interesting to see the actual documents.

I will be continiuing my research on my project which hasn't allowed anytime to fish this season. I plan to be up in your neck of the woods probably early September.

I just located a surviving MP that used to guard the Manzanar internees. He lives near Las Vegas and I hope to interview him when the rest of the rangers come to the annual Manzanar High School reunion.

Keep up the good work there...

Hey there FNT!

Working here has been quite an experience! I just finished working with the YCC (my 15-18 yr old boys) and have all these brothers now...lol. We did A LOT of conservation work around Manzanar. We have done quite a bit with Block 34. U need to see it!

I now am working with the interpretive center on all these various projects. I work the front desk, do research in the Manzanar library and have worked with just about every Ranger here. Ricky is my fav! What a great guy and funny of course! He has got me transcribing some oral histories right now. A lot of the interviews that he is conducting I get to transcribe when he gets back. Him and Kurt went on another excursion and will be back this weekend.

I have also been working with Eddy. He is my fav in the maintenance area. We are going to be laying some cement in block 34 to finish off the sidewalk there. U will have to come see it. I can't believe how much experience this is giving me!

I really haven't had much time to fish since I am always so tired after work. I am actually camping with a bunch of girls I met who work with the Park Service from Death Valley this weekend. There are always new people to meet and everyone here is very friendly!

I look forward to when you come up here in September. Keep working hard on all the histories. Ur display is great work as well.

It's terrific what you have been doing up there. I met with Alisa Lynch the Chief of Interpretation at Manzanar National Park Service on Monday along with "Ricky the ranger", Kirk Petersen and a host of other individuals trying to establish a core group down here in Los Angeles to organize volunteers to conduct oral histories.

Alisa has given you Two Thumbs Up! for you participation up at Manzanar and said what a blessing it was that I recommended you...I told her on the contrary that you are the one that should get all the props. They really appreciated all your hard work and your contribution to the Manzanar National Historic Site.

I shot an oral history for Richard Potashin and Kirk Petersen yesterday and was supposed to go with them to UCLA to look at the Speical Collections library about Manzanar.

I will definitely stopped by Manzanar on Friday, September 3rd, Labor Day weekend around 9 or 10 am. I hope that you may be there at that time.

I am volunteering for the "Go For Broke" National Educational Center and will be going to Las Vegas from September 9-13. shooting interviews of veterans of the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The most highly decorated outfit for it's size in American history. http://goforbroke.org/

I will be giving a lecture here in Los Angeles on September 23rd on my "Barbed Wire to Barbed Hooks" project.

Labor Day weekend I am here. I live in the volunteer housing in Independance. That Friday is August 31st to Sept 2nd is Labor day weekend but I am not busy. Fishing?? I will be there next Friday of course but I think you have my cell number as well to get in touch. Hopefully I will see you up here and if you have time fishing would be great! I work everyday, Mon- Fri, from 7:30am -5pm.

The 442nd regiment interviews sound awesome! I just rented a documentary on that here at the Manzanar library. Hope all that goes well. It seems that when you give talks they are always the opposite of where I am so I miss them...lol.

Anyways, might be seeing ya at the end of next week. :D
