View Full Version : An "Above" Average Day in the Surf. Santa Barbara - Sunday 7/19/09

Mike (Bones) and I headed back up North to our favorite stomping grounds today. After tracking the conditions all week and planning the strategy for the S.W.A.T. (Salt Water Attack Team), we decided with the flat conditions, Santa Barbara would be a good choice. We wanted to hit two of our favorite spots and then recon a couple of other locations that we've been wondering about for a few months now. Once again, preparation and determination resulted in an "above" average day in the surf. We hit the first spot at grey light and left the last spot around four and headed for the long drive home.

Conditions: Clear morning, sunny & warm afternoon, mild offshore wind, water temp. 66 degrees, flat conditions with swells averaging 1 foot or less, water clarity fair with moderate amount of salad. Scattered amount of larger baitfish in the water. Incoming tide.

Techniques: Bones - Dropshot 5" White Ice Zoom Flukes. Wingnut - Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110 (enhanced) Metallic Horse Mackerel & MS Baitfish Silver.

Fish Count (All Released)
Bones: (9) Flatties total - Two legals 23" & 25" + seven shorts.
Wingnut: (12) Flatties total - Three legals 22", 23" & 24" + nine shorts.

Gearing up during the grey light.

The Flatties were so aggressive today. They were actively chasing baitfish and striking our artificials with reckless abandonment. A couple of times, I had Halibut come back to strike at the LC two or three different times until they were finally hooked. On several occasions for Mike, they would rip the Zoom Flukes right off of his hooks. Love it when the Flat Boys are on the chew! Every fish that we landed was coughing up Anchovies or Smelts.

It was a blast going on another recon mission to a couple of unknown spots that we haven't fished before and scoring some nice quality fish. Coordinates saved on my portable GPS unit. Special thanks to my buddy Steve (E-Cat) for the private intel.

Mike, good call on insisting for us to go on that little hike... I was ready to walk away from the spot. Always a pleasure hitting the surf with you buddy. I'm going to order you that Lionel Richie CD that you wanted.

Another successful S.W.A.T. mission in the books... until next tide, God speed to all.

Arthur (Wingnut)

Success can be attained if you...

Always a pleasure fishing with you Arthur. I too am glad that we decided to head to that new spot. I had a feeling that it was going to pay off. Ya gotta love that sight fishing in shallow water. I was amazed how shallow they were even with the colder water temps up north. Good size bait up there also. It's been a strange and inconsistant season but we always seem to manage a productive day due to our relentless assaults and desire to never give up. I'm sooooooo tired today but I'm still smiling!
I hope that the swell doesn't arrive until AFTER this comming weekend.
MMMMMMMM......I think a Mid-week assault might be in order. I'm going CRAZY with anticipation when I wonder how that spot is at greylight.

See ya saturday!

Question: How do you work the drop shot fluke?
I'd like to give it a shot out on a boat in deeper water

Thanks!

Actually the dropshot technique was developed by bass anglers in japan for working deep water. It's deadly for halibut due to the fact that they sit on the bottom and you can adjust your tag end for water clarity. It doesn't take much action on the anglers behalf in the saltwater enviroment due to the currents. The best advice I can give you is to ALWAYS use a heavy enough weight to keep in contact with the bottom and play with it. When you drop your rig in the water....barely twitch your rod tip (up and down) and see how it takes very little effort on your behalf to make your bait come alive.Drag...Twitch and fan cast until you find them. Flourocarbon or a good co-polymer also helps with bite detection due to the fact that it sinks and doesn't stretch.

Mild & breezy all day up there Aaron... nice to be able to get away from the 100+ degrees in the Valley. Make sure to bring your A+ surf game on Saturday!

Five legals and you guys didn't keep any???? Kudos and good karma to you guys. :Applause:
You boys are too good! The flatties don't stand a chance.
Hard to keep a Halibut when you don't hump an ice chest, a bucket, a plastic bag or even a stringer to the surf. Haven't kept a legal Hali in over a year now... hopefully, Poseidon is keeping score.

Great pics and SWAT report!!

Aren't you glad all that seaweed was on land and not in the water?
Trust me John, there was quite a bit of it in the water at that spot too. Kelp really isn't hat hard to fish around, it's the loose eel grass that's a pain in the butt to work your lures.

Very Nice day you guys had out on the water and some legals to boot, Nice job on the flat fish Arthur and Mike. Those Under water shots are sick i wanna see more of em keep it up. Thanks for the pics and report.

I haven't done any of those underwater shots in awhile. They're fun but really awkward when you're trying to land a fiesty fish. You need to hit the surf with us again soon Lucas... are you grounded or something...?

Arthur, Mike,

That was a great day Mike. The Butts were all stacked up in the shallows. We spooked quite a few of them also. I caught a couple of them in knee deep water. It was really fun seeing them lift off the sand and chase the LC. Really gets the heart pumping.
You're right about this season, the Halibut bite isn't quite as hot as last year's, but we're holding our own.

Flatties are great to eat and the ones in the cleaner Northern water makes them even safer to eat. But every time I say that the next legal is gonna be dinner... I can't bring myself to kill it. I'm waiting for a serious bleeder to come home with me...

You probably would get many more legals if you hit the surf more Binh. You're a Pyramid Lake junkie, leave those Stripers alone and hit the surf with me once in awhile bro.
That pic of the Hali looks like an alien monster from some science fiction movie. They're a strange and fascinating creature aren't they?

I'll provide some intel that will help you achieve an "above" average day of fishing. See you guys on Saturday!

Awesome job! I've read your old posts and just saw your last thread with the picture of all your rods/reels. Dang....soo many reels/rods just for surf fishing!

As for baitcasting reels which do you prefer? I think i saw a curado, pluton, and calcutta??? What are the pro's and cons for each for the surf? Braid/mono and line wt.?

I have one LC and i think im going to get a few more to add to my arsenal, its addicting.

Thanks Steve, where have you been buddy... the bite is going on my friend. Every time that I'm fishing up there, I look for you on the beach or keep my eyes out for a yellow kayak paddling my way.

My weekends have been pretty tied up with my son's baseball tourneys (out of town) and friends visiting. So, I have been surf fishing (with 2 mile run thrown in to take care of my dinner ;-) lately for quickies around SB area after work. It's been off/on for me. One day, I'll catch perch, guitar fish and halibut all within couple hours and another day, I'm throwing all different kinds of bait and end up just with perch or mack. waves have been choppy and water dirty at where I"m fishing. Hope to make it out on one of the Sundays to fish with y'all. It's been enjoyable reading your posts on your hali hunting. You guys are talented!

Thanks for the compliments Arthur. You two work hard for your success, so I try to emulate that and it's paying off. I'll put that intel to good use before the summer is over, and promise to treat your halibut nicely.

I have some new intel to give you guys this Saturday in addition to an update too

Do work! I gotta get out there and fish the surf. Too much studying, I'm going nutts. I just came back from Monterey and they were killing halibut and striper in the surf. I didn't get to fish... I was there for my sister's birthday... but I saw. Oddly enough they were throwing these 8" red head with white body top water poppers. Any way, great job guy's.

Flourocarbon or a good co-polymer also helps with bite detection due to the fact that it sinks and doesn't stretch.
bones,
Thank you for the tips!
You guys make it look easy :UDaMan:

You don't need to go overboard with your surf gear... in my case, it's overkill, but my doctor says that I'm improving all the time.
Pick a reel that is comfortable, have good line capacity, reliable and can hold up in the sand & surf environment and you're good to go.
I don't use braid, a good quality mono or flouro line is the ticket for me, but to each his own. I spool my spinning set-up with #8 or #10 for dropshotting purposes, and the baitcaster with #10 or #12 to throw the hardbait.
As for the Lucky Crafts, I know what you mean by addicting... I'm a collector myself.

Corey, just make up your mind to hit the surf and do it. I was contemplating surf fishing for quite a few years before I finally took the leap. My only regret is that I didn't start much earlier. Catching a big Perch slab in the surf is every bit as exciting and fun as any Crappie in a lake can provide. Hope to see you out there sometime soon.

Funny, Dana (Fisherman57) and I were talking about planning a trip to Monterey sometime this Summer. I've been trying to catch a Striper out of the surf for a couple of years now. It's almost like capturing lightning in a bottle. I think Monterey will give me the best chance at one of these elusive species from the surf. Thanks for the PM with the info. I appreciate that very much.

Thanks for the post Arthur.
Always good reading. As for me personaly, at this time I greatly appreciate the info. I was in this section to ask if anyone has been up that way lately. I live in Santa Clarita and the 126 is not too far and it's a straight shot over to Ventura/Oxnard.
The pics w/the RXR tracks look kind of familiar (but then on the other hand, so many of those areas look the same). My grandfather used to take us grandkids up there when we went out surf fishing. There were so many areas that he'd take us to that I don't think I could remember any one particular one anymore, not to mention the fact that I'm talking 30 years ago. I've started to get this itch to get back into the salt (since I'm getting a permanent stripe from my excursion back into Striper fishing) and need to try to beat some of this heat out here!!! I may make the trek out there tomorrow as a matter of fact (gotta jones' for the Barred Perch_.
Where can you get the LC saltwater versions, online if you know? I've seen your various posts with some of your partners and I seem to notice a mention of those on most of your posts.
Congrats again to you and Mike. Fun Day! :Big Grin:

Good luck out there tomorrow. Probably a good time to go before the major storm swells are projected to hit us by Thursday and into the weekend with 5-10 foot surf.
The saltwater LC's can be found on Ebay, plenty of them there. PM sent.

Pretty similar to some of the stuff I see people toss at Castaic for Stripers. I'm going to get one of these Linesides from the surf someday!

No matter what you will feel your BONES (sorry Mike) aching the following morning after a trip out with them!!!!

I've heard about people being careful with their reels, but with their rods too? No worries about the Carrot Stix though, lifetime warranty. I had a big Shark snapped my Carrot Stix a few months ago. I sent it back and they replaced it no questions asked... very cool.

Mike started work back East a few weeks back and took the laptop so I missed the reports, just now catching up. Been fishing several times in Carlsbad/Oceanside but couldn't post the feeshies. Last Sunday night was good for me, alot of Spottie action, hard to fish without my fishing buddy and having to take it easy with the leg, it is healing very well nowadays. Mike is back this weekend for his daughter's wedding, 25th. Happy he is back again, we hope to do a little fishing Sunday night. Will be looking forward to your reports this weekend, take care.

The Carrot Stix 2009 Gold Series runs around $199.00 plus tax - Lifetime warranty included. The one that the Shark broke was the Boyd Duckett Gold Series, when I bought it last year, it was $249.00, but if you can find it now, it should be less.
