After being stood up on tuesday, I took my "GO TO" fishing buddy to Vail on friday to see if we could get the bass to bite. We got to the launch ramp about 6:45 to see lots of shad in the water. We made bait (about 30 pieces) and headed to the usual spot at about 7:30. Megan was on from the first cast, before I could get a line in she had another. I'm sure she thought to her self, I'm 2 up on dad, today is the day to keep a running score and talk some trash to the old man. We'll she kept 2 ahead of me most of the morning, there were two consecutive times that I thought I was going to pick up one on her but they both turned into double hookups for us. Anyway the bite turned off like a light switch at about 10:45 and it was getting HOT, so we went off shore a little more and jumped in the water to cool off. Water temp 80 degrees. We moved around the lake at that point, I switched over to Gulp minnows, Megan stayed on shad for a while (until I caught up to here and passed her) then we were both on the Gulp minnows. We picked up another 7 or 8 fish each the rest of the day and called it at 2:00. Final score Megan 15, DAD 19.

Another Big fish story:
I'm on 6lb with what I believe to be a perfect drag set. We are back in a long cove and I pitched a shad 3 ft from shore and Wham! Something hit it as soon as it hit the water, bit the shad off at the head. We go further in the cove and each of us get a bass to bite a dead shad. On the way out of the cove I threw on the same spot where I got the big blow-up, and AGAIN WHAM!!! This time I saw it as it roll on my bait, and I Hooked it. It was the beautiful brown, gold, color of a channel cat; my guess 10 -15lbs maybe bigger. It started peeling line off and headed straight out of the cove, it did not slow down, this thing was spooling me. So I'm chasing it with the trolling motor to try to slow it down or get some line back and right at the end of the cove it takes a right turn and wraps up in half submerged trees. I didn't even feel when it broke off, I just motored over to the tree and I was hung up. It wasn't wrapped that bad, the line came up with resistance from being wrapped around a tree limb, but fish gone. If you're keeping score, that's 3 times this summer, I've lost a fish like that. BIG FISH 3, ME 0 . Time to start using 10lb I guess. Megan was yelling words of encouragement the whole time, I think she was more disappointed then me.

Looks like your having a great time out there with your daughter. Its good to see young people enjoying the fantastic sport of fishing. I have two girls around that age and I havent got either one to catch the fishing bug yet.........but I'm working on it:Wink:.

Another nice day, Joe. I never make it to 2:00PM, but since it has warmed up, I am usually out of there by 10:30 or 11:00. I think I have told you before that I use 10# line for most applications at Vail. The catfish are the big reason. They are big, and they are plentiful.

Ya and she stopped fishing for about an hour to sunbathe and take a nap. It's only a matter time now. One of these days soon ......
