Its funny...I was reading the column on yahoo news about el niņo and this is how it said it would affect fishing in California...

"The warming of the ocean can also lead to a reduction in the seafood catch off the West Coast, and fewer fish can also impact food sources for several types of birds and marine mammals."

I thought fishing was supposed to be better during el niņo...

It moves the warmer water in with the bait and the pelagic fish follow. I think it is not good for the seals and birds tho but we already have to many of both.

I don't think the pelagic follow the bait but more the warm water during an el nino. The bait prefer the cold water. If remember correctly, it was during el nino season that good baits are harder to come by.....

I remember the El Nino of 97-98. I remember being on a boat heading out of Oceanside Harbor when we passed these 3 really old guys in a 12foot rowboat with something like an old 5 hp motor barely running heading back in to the harbor. We asked them how they did and each guy held up 2 yellowtail. Said they caught them at the entrance of the harbor. Crazy!

Yes, they follow the warm water more than they do the bait during El Nino times. Anchovies are harder to come by, but sardines are still plentiful. Bass fishing slows down due to the dying kelp.

I remember putting tons of 5lb firecrackers and releasingthem into the harbors. Good times.

Oct. '97 was my first time ever fishing the salt. Went out on the Galelaen form S.D. and couldn't believe seeing boiling water to the horizon full of all the yellowfin you could ever want and some bigeye. They were taking the dead bait and bare chrome hooks right at the boat! It was just nuts in the eyes of a trout fisherman! Haven't seen in anything like it since...man I hope it's time for another El Nino round.

I got in on a little of the 83 el nino... We had 214 yellows on a 3/4 out of redondo. Fishing was pretty good then.

I hope that this happens again. It'll be interesting to see what shows up in the surf too.

Yellows were everywhere in 97, but they were mostly 3-5 lbs. People were catching them on skiffs just outside Newport Harbor.
